myvy ss ute m6 is getting shit fuel econ. i drive to and from work 20km each way. i go thru 60 70 and 80km/hr zones. and i seem to be only getting 330km to a tank if im lucky, and thats running premium fuel.
my average speed is around 45km/hr. Any one else getting shit fuel econ??
cheers

Is it smooth taking off from standstill/changing gears etc still? It could be the oxygen sensors...

A lot of things can affect this. The average speed, combined with the increasing speed zones you mention, suggest stop start traffic (or at least a lot of slowing down), and the first 10kms or so it would be still warming up, where they use more fuel when not up to full temp.
If you take off with a bit of "spirit", combined with what I mention above, you might actually be getting what you should get.
Take it on a 100km or so trip down a freeway next weekend, resetting the trip meter before you go. That should give you a better indication of where it stands.

Two different cars I know, but there's an '04 LTD with the 5.4 V8 working as a limo here in Bne that only gets 330kms urban to a tank

My VS exec V6 auto does about the same - smaller fuel tank (63l versus 75l), smaller engine, similar distance per tank. You are probably getting typical economy for Sydney traffic especially if you travel in the peaks - cant say peak hour, cause it lasts much longer than that. My missus drives the VS - all short trips, engine probably barely gets warm. I had a VY exec V6 wagon for work from 2003 to 2006, and 400 KM was about it around town - a lot of travelling in the peaks usually about 30 K each way, plus travel between jobs during the day. Usually got about 4 business days per tank (so typically about 100km per day. A bit harder to compare my Clubby as I don't drive it in weekday traffic.

I get around the same as you between 300-400km to a tank! it nasty on the wallet I even get so annoyed and drive like a granny and still no better. I'm thinking a tune will help maybe 1-2lt/100 better.

I get 300 every tank when Im in 60-80km zones and max 10min trips, so not even warm when I get there-not at all gentle on the throttle-not thrashing just not grandma-cammed also.
I have tried to drive very gently to see the difference and I can keep her alot friendlier on fuel but I dont have the patience to concentrate on trying to drive with an egg between foot and pedal.
On the freeway I can average 9.5 with ease..............not much different to my 03 v6 wagon in the city, freeway the ss is better.

hey mate, i had exactly the same problem gettin max of 330km out of a tank and i wasnt very happy but it isnt my daily driver so i wasnt to fussed, then i got WA PERF to wack in a mid 230 cam and other bits and pieces and surpisingly im gettin around 400km a tank if not more and drives like a stocka, my opinion is that its all in the tune :smilesandbanana:

It's about what I get mate. Manual ss ute. I get about 40kms more when school holidays kick in.
Although how many kms/tank I get doesn't really worry me so I don't notice it that much.

I get around the same km out of tank in my VYSS..
It seems you haven't had your car tuned yet by looking at some of your previous posts.
This could potentially help.
Bucket loads of people (even sponsers) on here are always saying how their mafless tunes increased their economy and power.
Might be the answer you need to solve your problem.
Even if its not, its one of the best things you can do to a LS1 powered car anyway.
Also if you can switch from Shell Vpower racing to a complete clean tank of BP Ultimate that could possibly help out slightly. It did for me for a very minor gain of 30kms. Everybit counts right?

I think planetdavo has it pegged pretty well - try to do a trip on a freeway for a decent distance resetting the trip meter as soon as you hit 100kmh and then drive as steadily as you can holding that speed (not on cruise control). With an M6 you should get well under 10l/100km. If not you have a problem!
As AFAR suggested, if you are using an ethanol based fuel that can also affect your economy. On Ultimate my A4 LS1s all returned in the 14-15l/100km range at that sort of average speed or around 400km per tank or a bit over (depending on how low you let it get before filling). The A6 L98 is heavier on fuel...... :(
PS Have utes got 75l tank as per sedans?
ah shite forgot about that.
70l tank for the vy-vz utes.

When i first got my VY SS M6 i was getting around 13 / 14L per 100 round town. Over the past few mnths it just got worse and worse, around 20 / 22L 100.
Just replaced the O2 sensors and it went back down the 15L/100.
Have now sent my pcm off for a mafless tune so we'll see what that does for fuel

ont really drive in peak times in the morning at 4am but in the arvo about 430pm. I had it from blacktown (sydney) to canberra and back the other week and it was great. so it could just be the slow speeds i get to do ?/

depending if anything is done or not to your car but that economy spunds like cam material, stock my ute used 400-490kms per tank but now 800km out if it around my town, average speed 58kmh @ 9.7l/100 and dropping quick due to 25%UD installed yesterday (9.5 now)

These motors show around 50L/100 on the instantaneous reading when giving it only 2/3 throttle in first gear off stationary. That should give you an idea about low speed "economy"...

Mid 230's and drives and idles like a stocker, I'm sure  You're living in a dream land and it's posts like this that cause people to get into trouble when they get big cams and expect them to behave like 'stock' which they certainly DO NOT.

mate i bought a new vy ss ute m6 in 2002 and was getting about the same as your getting, i kept taking it back to the dealer thinking there must be somthing wrong but nah thats just normal was what i was told then got to speaking with a few other blokes with the same or similar car and they were the same so id say your just gonna have to learn to live with it haha. P.S. i've just bought a WL caprice and its just as bad !!

i bought from new an SV8 and have always noticed that if i use the same fuel my economy is good, but if i swap from servo to servo the economy is worse, and this is with using 98 octane fuel,
i have gone from low 8's to mid 9's with just a different servo.
i now only use BP Ultimate and the economy is good.
drove to brisbane and back on BP Ultimate and adveraged 8.3 l/100k's when stock, but as stated earlier if change fuel brand economy is effected.
try using the same brand for three tanks and see what happens?

I guess it's been said before, but don't rely on the fuel consumption readout on the dash. Mine is around 2L/100km over most of the time.
On general country driving my M6 gets between 10 to 11 litres/100kms (calculated).
Please excuse my ignorance, but do any of the tuners do a special torque/fuel economy type tune for people like me who travel 160kms per day to and from work?

They run rich from the factory so any good tune should improve your economy and power.

Without wishing to hijack myvyssute's tread, may I ask whether a custom tune would be much better than a mailorder tune when simply looking for the best fuel economy?
HYMEY

Most likely not. One of oztrack tunes got nearly 900km from a tank(open road) just using a mail order tune. They just run a little less total timing and slightly safer A/F.
I run me VE SS on bp ult & I get about 15.5l/100 around town, on a country trip the best I could get was 10.9

If its custom tuned on the road aiming at fuel economy improvement the answer is YES. But mail order tunes can be supplied which have been developed this way as well. Good economy results from smartest use of DFCO, AFR/timing combo and a full open loop data log and trim of the Main VE table in the tune calibration.
Todd (From Mainline Dynos) has shown me how to identify the best combo on the dyno for fuel economy, but you still have to get the afrs accurate when cruising on the road. This is also effected by little things like intake air temp sensor placement. etc.
Best economy i have seen lately is my dads WH Statesman (Baby cam, 25% underdrive, extractors/catback, A4 3.07 stock stall PB 13.1/108mph ) it did 8.8L/100km from Hornsby to Newcastle on the freeway at 110kph and about 15km of the trip was bumper to bumper. The average fuel readout on the trip comp has been calibrated to make it accurate to the pump and the speedo/odometer has been logged with EFIive and compared to a GPS.
