hi all, would like your opinions on wheather it is important to fill up at the same brand of fuel eg always fill up with bp, shell etc. Or if its ok to fill up anywhere as long as its 98 ron premuium fuel.

cheers strick

Coming from the oil business previously, i think you will find very little difference between mobil 8000 and bp ultimate, v power, more so.

I wouldnt be buying it from a "star" performer brand that prodominantly supplies supermarkets, as I wouldnt call this the "safeway" :1peek:

I'm quite certain that Mobil and BP use the exact same refinery for their fuel, so it should be identical.

However, Shell fuel is definately different and i know from experience. I normally use BP in my motorcycle, i used Shell V Power once, and it ran like absolute crap, was hard to start and lacked power.

Hi Tyrefriar,

I wouldnt be buying it from a "star" performer brand that prodominantly supplies supermarkets, as I wouldnt call this the "safeway"

Just wondering if you could expand on why? I have a lease card and fill up at where you are suggesting is inferior most of the time and am wondering what the difference is between them and any other form os 98 ron fuel?

Thanks in advance

for the last 6 days i have been running shell V Power Racing and so far it seems awesome, i have been able to get around an extra 3-4 degrees of timing into it at WOT and around 4-5 degrees of timing in the mid range without any knock. Previously i have been using BP Ultimate and have found it to be very good and will continue to use it for general street driving.

Vortex98 is not supplied to Woolworths (or Safeway for the Mexicans) outlets in the ACT. You have to go to a Caltex servo for it.

And I have read an independant study that proved out of the big 4, it was the best 98RON fuel. Second choice would be BP Ultimate or Mobile 8000. I try to avoid V-Power though...

I use them all and I don't really notice any difference or have any problems. I have the shell 'V Power' (what a wanky name!) in at the moment and the car is running fine, power seems about the same as last week when I ran Mobile.

I think it can depend on what tune you have had done to your car though as I have heard some people say they can get knocking.

Cheers, Steve

Think they are all similar, but once had to fill with a 98 fuel with 10% ethanol (it was called preumium plus i think)and noticed a few days later car was idlling a little ruff. As soon as i topped up tank with V power all was good. So i avoid that stuff:spew:

I generally try to vary the brands of fuel I put in my car cause a mate used to work at BP and he reckons that Ultimate is a bit better fuel than Shell Optimax (that's what it was called at the time), apparently Optimax burns 'drier', but if they put Optimax/V Power into V8 Supercars then it's good enough for my car so I really don't care, I don't notice a power difference.

They all seem to work in my car. I just make sure I fill up at the cheapest time of the week.

Ultimate 98 is not supplied to any other service station apart from BP ones australia wide...know that for a fact as i used to work at the BP Kwinana Refinery in WA a few years back

i use nothing but BP Ultimate 98....ocassionaly Vortex98 as it might be urgent to get fuel in the car and that is only supplied to caltex servos australia wide too...used once i think in my current car

The first part of your post is incorrect Kris. Woolies Servo in Condor does sell Vortex 98 fuel..

just think "home brand" for any supermarket product, and you get the idea on the fuel side they sell as well.

I did see not too long ago on tv about an owner of many servo's in Northern NSW filling the BP 'Ultimate' tanks with regular, thus making him a shed load of profit. He was being investigated at the time it was shown, and it all come to light with one of his ex employees blowing the whistle.

Makes you wonder what we are paying for sometimes!!

And he wasn't too happy to gquote on the subject, although tests completed by BP officials, highlighted regular in the ultimate tanks.

Oh yeah, he got caught out big time... didnt he cop some sort of fine.. Althought id like to see how much $$$ he still had left from his illegal profits after he paid the fine.....

I didn't find out what happened to him, but as you say what he was fined, was probably not close to what money he scammed out of the public.

Well I stand corrected then... But I didn't want to go that far out of my way just to save 4 cents per litre

As for someone putting regular in the 98 tank and selling it at 98, personally, I find it quite easy to smell the difference between a 91RON fuel and a 98RON fuel.

Maybe it's just me but it smells kind of "nicer".

Actually, I just did a search on their website... Holt and Gungahlin Woolies Caltex servos both have Vortex98. Holt wouldn't be high volume enough for the fuel not to sit too long, but the one at Gungahlin will be ok and is close enough... But really, at the end of the day, 4 cents a litre is what? $2 or $3 cheaper lol

Its amazing how quickly some people will rip us off just to get a bit ahead. Thanks for the comments everyone seems like there isnt much difference filling up with different RON 98 fuels.

In relation to the 'smell' of the fuel, CSP is on the money. A good source informed me of this and a quick way to check the quality of the fuel. you will find that the good stuff actually has a different odour to the cheaper or regular fuel. (fresher or kinda sweet smell)

I reckon I have filled up a few times with dodgey alleged BP Ultimate. Car runs like shite, pulls timing and feels less responsive. Also backed this up on the dyno recently after just filling up with some not great or old Ultimate.

I knew it wasn't just me! That "sweeter" or "fresher" way of putting it is kind of what I think too. It's hard to describe... But I can definitely tell the difference.

Used to do the dips daily when I worked at a shell servo that had 91, 98, 100 unleaded and deisel and there was definitely a difference.

On a side note, funniest thing one day while at the console... A woman came in to pay while there was a tanker delivering fuel with a concerned look on her face and said "it really smells like petrol out there". I almost couldn't contain my laughter when I asked her what she thought a petrol station should smell like! LMAO!!!

 Where from? I often fill up down your way - the 2 servos on Dandy-Hastings Rd (Thompson's Rd and Hall Rd). Haven't noticed any problems.......

Now that sounds very familar:) Spot on with the different smell. We need to have 3 containers with fresh 91,95,98 and 100 ron fuels in them and you will be able to smell the difference. "Every" time the tank of the clubby gets a fill up, I always put a bit on the concrete and some in my fingers. There is a Big difference in fuel quality.

No problems with those servo's Wonky. Keep feeding her good stuff:)
