My VX 5.7 very occasionally does the same. Took about 5 shots one day to get it started, it would fire up straight away then die. From other reading I've done here I believe it to be a bad connection between the ring around the ignition and the contact on the key. The PCM has trouble reading the key so shuts it all down.

Just bend the ignition ring out a tad with a flat head screw driver.
And make sure you push the key in whilst turning it when you want to start the car.

And check that the key is firmly screwed into the keyfob

Close guys but no cigar. The VT/VX ignition barrel immobiliser ring is a bad design and tends to fail after awhile. My 5.7L VX Calais was doing the same thing so I replaced the VT/VX ring with the VY/VZ ring (cost about $12 from Holden, part number is here somewhere). Easy to do, unscrew the surround, ignition ring pops out, unclip bulb from it, replace with the new ring, clip the bulb back in, and you're done. Mine started doing it more and more frequently until it was happening nearly every day so I replaced the ring and it hasn't done it since.

So yours was close but "no cigar guys"? Good for you for your fix. Hopefully this gent doesnt have to do that and just do the simple tried and tested quick fixes suggested.

Fair enough mate, my money is on my fix but I can see the reasoning behind yours.

Might be no cigar but usually what I sugested fixes the problem pretty much.
I have a relo that has a VT Calais and I told her what to do and its fixed it 12 months later still no probs. It depends on the condition of the igniton barrels contacts really.
