Just wondering if anyone could clarify if using the '1,2 and 3' gears on a 5.7 auto will do damage to the trans??

As long as you dont over rev , there is no reason why it should do damage. Just be careful when you are going down the gears. After all, you are only changing the gears manually rather than them changing by themselves.:driving:

Just go and get yourself a manual if you want to change gears!!

I agree hey,

I've always been told it does damage the trans - however the :search: button will yield you a few threads worth reading.

I pop 3rd to slow down now and then but I try leave it alone most of the time. I never play and put it in 2nd 1st etc, even with a upgraded box. No use using the shifter like a stick.

You either get your tuner to do it how you want it *looks at himself* or get a manual valve body OR talk to RVO who have a "clip" that you just plug into the A4 and it makes it a complete manual control, unplug and plug in the standard clip and your back to normal.

1, 2 and 3 are a STANDARD feature of these models. Using them in itself isn't an issue, it's HOW people use them.
They are there to be used, for people that understand how to use them safely. They are primarily designed to increase CONTROL of the vehicle, not performance. Situations like lower gears for downhill engine braking, lower gears for climbing steep hills etc, not traffic light drags. They can also be of benefit in hilly areas with corners as well, as many auto's want to change down gears in the actual corner, which can be a dangerous thing if it's slippery. The driver manually changing lower BEFORE the corner can increase safety.
You can still use them for traffic light grand prix, but most modern auto's gain little, if any, performance this way. They just give the driver something to play with....

Just to put my 2 cents worth in guys ..
i say drive manualy as much as possible .

The over run sprag used to support forward clutch load in selected D4 range from 1st to 4th gear .
The strength of this one way sprag is limited and can fail under load .

In selected 3rd 2nd or 1st gear a twin friction clutch system called the over run clutch is engaged to support and relieve the over run sprag of all load ..

Thus deleting the weak over run sprag from the equation completely .

Always race your 4L60E in selected 3rd for optimum strength

i know this is a few days old but i agree if you want to drive like a manual just put one in ur car it is more fun than the auto, i did i ripped out the auto and put in a t56 six speed and haven't looked back at all but it is a expensive exercise

I would suggest using a high quality automatic transmission oil such as royal purple, most damage to auto trans come from overheating.

Cheers.
