Hey everyone, been a member for a while but rarely online. Mainly cos I dont have an ls1.
I'm finaly about to buy my first ls1 poweres Commodore, but I dont have much $$$ so it pretty much has to be a VT SS.
Is there anything i should know about these cars/engines? I have driven 1 only & it isn't stock (JBondSS' VX Berlina) the cars I'm looking at are all pretty much stock, but if I get one cheap enough ill do the suspension straight up. and maybe some other stuff:burnout: I only have $14k to spend:bawl:
What sort of problems will i have with high km engines? A couple of the cars ive been looking at have over 195k on them, but are selling for $10-$11k, which would leave me quite a bit for upgrades & the like:woot: about the lowest I can find in my price range is 120-140k's ($14,990) which would leave me nothing to play with, but I can deal with a stocky for a few months i guess:doh:
Any input is much appreciated, thanks for your time!
Cheers,

Craig.

sorry i wouldnt be buying anything with that many kays on it, and then modifying it. if i were you id be spending the extra for lower kays and better condition and leaving it stock til you can afford the mods (like i did).

why not look for a VT exec or ex-pursuit with the LS1? or maybe settle for a series 1, or a blown V6? as for problems with a high-km engine, how long is a piece of string? its a matter of what has been replaced already, and how well looked after (if at all) it has been. personally its not the engine id be worried about (so long as it has been serviced properly and regularly), its the diff and gearbox etc. thatd worry me.

Mate look for VX SS Commodores in your price range, I just traded in my ss for 10g but they lowered the price of the monaro for me. I was gonna sell it for 12-13g privately with 140,000k on it but it needed some tlc so just be patient and wait for the right one to come.

i agree 100% better off with a sound stocker with lower k's...a solid base to start off with

When i say mods, i'm thinking more along the lines of suspension, diff & ratio, auto maybe. Then i'll start playing with the motor.
Choice between vt ss with 135000km or vx ss 2 with 16500km, which would you choose?

Cheers for the input guys,

Craig.

i take it you mean a VX with 165,000km on it (typo)? in that case id go for the VT, unless you really prefer the VX. just make sure you have it inspected before you buy it.

mate, i sold a VT2 Berlina with the Gen 3 and FE2 Suspension back in 2006 for under $12,000 (probably the most depreciated model) but almost a Calais inside, still get the performance, can get the FE2, all you need to change to get the same handling is the wheels and tyres. If you get a VX or later, it will have LSD anyway...definately have a look at Berlinas. The reason they are hard to sell i think is people don't look up Holden Berlina on carpoint, car sales etc. So when you go to sell it, advertise it as a Commodore (Berlina) - you will get more hits, and people will say "oh, this one has more in it" you will get more calls, a quicker sale, and get more for it.

Spot on, forgot the last zero!
I think I'll look for the car with the least km's and go from there, gotta do something soon but cos a guy in a patrol decided to drive into the back of the VL last night and now I don't have a car at all. But I do have an extra $3 or $4k to spend!!
