I took my M6 VE SS from Perth to Yallingup over the Oz day weekend and got some suprisingly good fuel consumption rates -
On the way down: I filled up in vic-park, zeroed the trip computer at the petrol station then drove down the freeway via mandurah. The distance was 274kms, and I drove nonstop (apart from traffic lights) at the speed limit (time 3 hours 5 mins, so not dawdling). Admittedly, I was fairly gentle on the foot (managed to hold back and only open it up a couple of times ;-). Two people in the car, and boot full of usual stuff. When I hit the freeway on-ramp in como it was sitting at the usual city rate around 13.5l/100, and I was surprised to see it drop constantly for the rest of the way...down to a measly 8.9l/100 as I rocked into yallingup. Brilliant!
Then spent 3 days down there, driving around margaret river and commuting between wineries etc, aircon on and 4 people (yes, everyone likes to ride in the SS!), where it rose to to 10.3l/100.
Finally, driving home, this time with aircon on the whole way, and stopping in both dunsborough and mandurah (a nightmare of traffic both). Final total round trip of 679kms (all on the one tank), returning 9.7l/100.
So, there it is: proof that the V8 petrol guzzler isnt! It beats my 3.4 V6 hilux by 1.5L/100 on the same trip, and creams my old 3L V6 Pajero which would use nearly double.
oh yeah - I'm just on 15000 k's, so I guess the L98 is well run in by now.

Impressive numbers mark ! Noice !
I did a run to Busselton and back with the usual runing around when your down their and averaged in the 9L's over the whole trip..
Makes me glad I got rid of my shitty VT v6.
I am finding that it is pretty reasonable on the juice most the time...

Those are good figures. if you do alot of hwy type driving the difference between the 6.0 v8 and a 6 cyl is not that great (even some 4cyl) maybe 10%.
I used to have a mirage that would get about 6.5 l/100 on the hwy (not bad) but if you load it up with 3 people and do about 125 it would average 9l/100. i doubt the ve would change much at all doing 125 and 3 people (5.4 and 4.0 ford dont)
so $2500 a year in fuel would become $2750 - thats no stopping me from geting a 6ltr (i will be going from a 4ltr v8 and am expecting to get better economy with the ve 6.0)

Well all I can say is congratulations on getting the 'special' one off the lot, as I've NEVER seen figures like that from my VE SSV.
Morley to Albany, (450km) non stop, the BEST I've EVER had is 10.3.... and I've made that run a few times now.
Around the metro, I would average out approx 16's.
My colleague has the same car, and that performs exactly the same. So you either got one hell of a good build, or we bought some thirsty machines.
I always use Ultimate 98, so apparently theres no discounting that reason.
But who cares, afterall, I use my company fuel card to fill up, so drink up!
Nice figures mate. You have to be happy with that.

I guess the perth-mandura drive is a really flat, and smooth road, so its the best you'd ever expect, a bit unfair in that respect. I havent done albany in this car, but I remember it being quite hilly for a lot of the way, so that might explain the difference. And teh average speed would be higher too.

Hi MarkC,
Do you have any mods on the SS? I am getting similar figures on my stock SS; 9.7 litres for a 500km trip Newcastle to Grafton. 10.4 after driving around town and returning in heavy traffic.
Is it just me or do the SS manuals get much better fuel economy then the SS-V Auto's?

What was the wind direction?
My fuel use varies for each end of a trip. Generally into the wind my fuel use is about 11l/100km

i did a 2400km round trip to Coral Bay back in july last year and the car had about 6000km before i left
both mate and myself in the car, both our dive bags, personal bags, tents, supplies for the 10days, esky, etc etc...the boot and the bag seat full...the rear of the car was slammed hard!
on the way there got 10.9L/100km with air con on all the way with lets say highish average speed as we want to make it there before sunset so we could put up tent etc
on the way back with same gear in car but more of a relaxed drive 10.1L/100km
on the trip to Busselton for the car show with some of the other forum guys i was getting low 9L/100km until overtaking time.....getting back into 3rd gear on the limiter is the only way to overtake...execute it nice and quick :hide:

lol
3rd gear on the limiter would be nuts! At least 140kph. I hit the limiter in second while cracking 110kph in my VE Clubby last week. Just to see where it was really. Had a bit of a chuckle at the "ding - change up" :D

Best I've seen is 8.4l/100km on a trip from Sydney to Warren NSW. About 515km each way over the Blue Mountains, but very flat past Orange.

Had a bit of a chuckle at the "ding - change up" :Dpassing massive road trains way up north isnt a take that can be done safely by not getting up into the car....
its too dangerous just to slowly pass them...
Do all you guys just trust what the cars trip computer is telling you or do you actually check its accuracy?
I checked my computers accuracy by the litres used on the computer vs the litres used when I filled up (how many litres on the fuel bowser at the servo). It was out so I adjusted it.
For the record, on Hwy trips (about 2 hour trip), I can get 8.5 ltrs/100. Around town I get around 15.
(sorry, it's not a VE so I guess not really relevant to this thread ))

See..who says V8's are thirsty bastards that drink all the worlds fuel. That's pretty damm good going if you ask me.
As it happens I took a trip down to Prevelly/Gnarabup on the weekend. Its about 12k's out of Margaret River. Filled up in Joondalup and reset trip B to 0k's and set off all the way down the freeway except I didnt go anywhere near all the mandurah crap, drove around a bit down there and then back again. Filled up again at same petrol station in Joondalup with 714k's on trip B. A/C on all the way.
I was very bloody impressed.

I have an xforce 3" catback only, but I was using the standard mufflers on this run (they bolt up to the xforce pipes) because I couldnt stand the drone on a long trip!
Apart from that its bog.

My A6 SSV will easily get into the 9s at 100kmh steady cruising. (Tuned, extractors, zorst, OTRCAI.) I am waiting for the opportunity to do a long steady trip as I reckon it would go close to getting into the 8s!
Around town it's a different story - heavier than any of my LS1s were by at least 1L/100km...... :(

The V8s in the VEs have great consumption. If you put your foot down then yeah it's going to hurt, but if you do highway/freeway driving you'll be fine.
I took a WM Caprice to Margaret River, Cruise Control sat on 115km the whole way. Fuel consumption was 8.7L/100km. Used Climate Control the whole way.
It's easy to get great consumption out of the V8s if you want it. I've done metro driving in an SSV ute for a day and got 12L/100. But I've also done the same type of driving in the same car and got 16.5 (that was a heavy foot day).
Fuel consumption isn't dependant on build, it's dependant on how thirsty the [I]driver is.

I've had mine down into the 8's on a long run. A friend of mine owns a ball tearing 4cyl Camry (newish one) and he cant' get it into the 10's on a long run..

Yeah unfortunately his Camry sits at probably 3000rpm on the long runs compared to the V8s sitting at 1500.

The only thing ball tearing about a Camry is that anybody who buys one must have already had their balls ripped off! That's why they bought such a gormless car...... :weirdo:

I've had my SS down to 8.7l/100km at the end of a Canberra to Sydney run (pretty well 110 the whole way, with some hills) and regularly see figures in the low 9s for that trip.
My best was a trip from Perth to Majimup, got down to 10.9L/100, did a fair bit of overtaking though... Around town I'm lucky to get under 15.3, normally around the 16 mark, mind you I have a heavy foot :eyes:

My numbers are very similar too. I figured out that a lighter foot on takeoff and a quick change out of 1st (bypassing 2nd and going to 3rd if possible) shaves about 1L/100 of my numbers. Needs a lot of restrained discipline though :(. I reckon I'm running a bit rich so things might improve if I address that ASAP.
Check out this article, especially the tips at the end, some of em work for me :)

I didnt think you could get such good mileage with a V8 until I changed to driving smoother. I don't drive my ute to work anymore as it is stop start and that really hurts with a V8.

i have a ve ssv manual and did a trip from seymour vic to rosebud leaving seymour at 5pm on a friday arvo and sitting on 5k over limits all the way i had an average of 8.4 until i hit eastlink roadwork bottle neck (10 k of under 50kph) and still finished with an average for the whole trip down of 8.9 l per hundred. on the return trip i made a stop off in frankston and then in the melb cbd and ended up with a total down and back average of 9.3 l per hundred and no i do not drive like a granny but accelerate up to cruise speed fairly quickly (pull away from most traffic at lights) but i do short shift into 6th at about 75-80kph.
cheers wm

Very good numbers your getting there, mine is around the same with only 8000kms on it so far, with doing 60% around town and 40% highway mine is averaging 12.5-13.4 and thats with i'd say 50% spirited driving and 50% normal driving. I really dont think if i got the SV6 that it would be much differance at all though.
