Hi All,

I have had a problem with my SS for some time now. Every now and again my car makes a clunking/knocking noise from the rear end. Also when I turn left into corners, the car makes an awful whining squeling noise, it gets louder the more you drive and the warmer the car gets.

It happens mostly when doing left hand turns, but can also occur on right handed corners but not as much. The car is not driven hard into corners, even pulling into car parks when turning left it squeals like crazy.

Recently when I have been driving it now squeals when just driving, it sounds like a wheel bearing, but cant be 100% sure.

I have had it to a few mechanics who cant fault it. Have been told that my rear brakes have some hairline cracks, but this problem has been with the car now for 2 years, and through three sets of brake pads, so I dont think its that.

The noise is definitely coming from the rear end. Could this be a diff problem?

its currently at Holden who advised that they cant fault it either, they advised that they will put in some LSD diff additive to see if that helps.

Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts? Anyone else had similar problems

Its a 2001 VX 2 SS Commodore, stock as a rock.

Thanks guys

hi clarky i had the same problem on hollys at christmas time.i went from adelaide to victoria following the sprint cars. the temp was very hot and this clunking sound happened a couple of time on take of from a stop sign not driving it hard just normal take of.took it to warnaball holden dealer and as usual with these idiots if they cant hook you up to a computer they cant work it out.took it to another garage in warnaball and he said it could be the bearings on the outer drive shafts or may be the hand brake. he told me to ease on the hand brake next time it happened but wouldent you know it did not happen on way home (drove wright the way home in extreme heat) and has not done it since. will be taking it to a drive shaft specialist next week when we get back from sprint car titles in sydney. if you get any info please leave you findings on here and i will do the same LOL

You say one place are "idiots", yet you say you are happier with a place that says it could be "this", or is could be "that"...?
