Hey guys,

At this point in time I'm really confused which model to get, they are both great cars I love them both but heres the thing!

This week I test drove a VE SS and a VE SS-V both auto's to my surprise the normal ss was smoother to drive more ride compliant and felt a little quicker too. I just wanted to hear peoples opinions on what they think of both these models, I am familar with the extra features in the SS-V mainly being leather seats and the lcd screen that controls the radio, air con etc.

Is the better seats, lcd screen the only thing that makes the ss-v more desirable over the normal ss?

Other things that concern me is whats the average cost of tyres for 19" rim as opposied to the 18's? Insureance priemium any different?

Basically I just wana know why I should fork out an extra 7-8k for a rougher ride and more pricy tyres when they do to be changed.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you can afford it, get the SSV.
If you're pushing it, get the SS.
Allow for the cost of mods.
Fairly simple maths.

Went through the same issue recently, ended up with SSV. Love the leather interior and the extras the V gets over the SS. Others have chosen the SS.

Drive both and make a decision.

its really personal choice mate

the SSV has:
leathers not cloth seats,
dual climate instead of normal air con,
leather steering wheel and gear knob,
alloy faced pedals,
big screen for stereo, climate, etc display,
projector headlights which with HID are sensational ,
different tailights - black out,
19" rims not 18" rims,
side air bags with the leather......

thats all off the top of my head

like others have said if u can afford it or want a car with all the extra luxeries then the SSV
if ur not fussed and want something cheaper to put more money to mods, etc then the SS

both awesome cars...either way u will be happy

I went for the SS, could really see the value in a few fancy bits for 7-8k extra, added SSV taillights & HSVi 20s to mine anyway.

Id rather spend the savings on some decent brakes for it.

Really it's personal choice i bought ss because i hate leather but the 18's do ride better noticed this after upgrading to 19" ssv rims. But is the $7000 really worth it? I didn't think so:yup:!

side air bags with the leather......

thats all off the top of my head

Don't forget the curtain airbags as well...

so driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags.... Safety reasons alone the SSV is worth it.

Id get the SSV worth the extra Coin!

There wasn't really any doubt in my mind. The SSV just had a whole different presence to the SS in the showroom.

IMHO, the SS/SV6 rims: :spew:

I went for HSVi 20's, I don't find the ride too bad, the Senator has them as well and when I buy my next new Holden, I'll make sure they have 20s on them. :)

Sure, get the SSV Tail Lights and SSV rims but it won't feel the same as an SSV.

If you want to have enough coin to convert it into a street monster, by all means get the SS and have fun in Mod Heaven :p

Enjoy your decision, it's gonna be a hard one:flip3:

I went the SS in ute version as it costs bugger all to make one look (externally) identical to an SS-V. And the two are mechanically identical.

Wheels: about $300 change over from 18s to 19s
V Badge: $17
Projector headlights: About $150 change over.

No-one knowing you went the tight arse option : Priceless:)

You just miss out on the Climate contol and leather which I didnt think was worth $4500. Seems obvious why GM push the SS-V, they are a big profit model.

Hi,
In Motor Magazine's 'Bang for your Bucks' competition, the SS got the pick well ahead of the SS-V and won the title in both 06 & 07.
The extra $7-8G doesn't (to Motor) mean a better performance car but rather a lesser one.
However The SS-V, I thinks gets the vote in the looks department.
You won't get confused with any SV6's too if you get the SS-V.
It really comes down to what you would be most happy with having in your garage.
Either way, I will still be envious!

Cheers
John

it s worth thinking about ..but change the tail lights ..you wont keep the standard ss or ssv wheels anyway ...and from owning cars with leather trim before no mater how well you look after them they will look shit house after time and the cloth trim will age much much better..keep the extra bucks for all the mod you will want to do...i dont think its a prestige thing after all its only a holden.. i'd say we all could have bought the ssv but its up to the individual's on the one you buy....that's my 2c.. btw its a good toy any way you look at it

i dont mean to digress here, but when you order a ss or sv6 and get the leather option, i dont know if it is the case with all of them but the loan car i got was an sv6 with leather but the seats were different to my ssv. they werent as well bolstered and the leather looked more like vinyl and wasnt perforated. is the leather in the ssv different to the leather optioned ss/sv6??

By the way i went the ssv as i prefered the steering wheel, instrument cluster, screen, dual climate, sound system, and the leather... the standard ss was a bit plain imo.

cheers

My guess would be that that car had had leather done by a trimmer aftermarket rather than on the assembly line???

yep. When I was looking at a SS with leather the dealer told me the leather interior is the same as the SSV.

I did a call around last week to work out how much the tyres are going to cost (mines done 11000km).

From bob janes the bridgestones were 590 fitted, and a Yokohama was $540.

A bridgestone store wanted 670 for the Bridgestones.

Me going to start saving for a rim and tyre package..

Why Bridgestones? Why not get Kumho or Hankook or some others. Ive never bought Bridgestones and have had no troubles and had high mileage. Go to a reputable shop and ask about road noise for each tyre and heard ones with silica in them are better too, cant remember why though. Ive always had 45 to 55,000 kays per set. I currently have Hankook Ventus K104 and are directional (can only go one way on rim) and no road noise. They were $300 each. I would have got some silica ones for the same price but there was a bit of a wait for them to come in and I had no time.

I have treated mine a few times and it is nice and supple now...

And you do get those wonderful digital gauges in the SSV.... :spew: That's why I put the binnacle gauges in my car.. :)

Have too agree thats why i went ss plus better bang for your buck:rofl: Used the $6000 i saved for mods. There must be a good leather conditioner on market but the harsh aussie sun always seems too winand turn leather hard and vinyl like!

Each to their own... if you have the money go the SSV

I bought an SS M6 with Leather, why:

- Cheaper, couldnt justify the extra cost
- Preferred the style of the rims and wanted lower cost replacement tyres

What I miss:-

- Lack of climate control. I dont need dual zone but I like the set and forget of climate control on my previous car.

I brought the SSV and will never wish I had choosen the SS.

The SSV is the only one to go for until you look at the R8 but I will not go there or my wife will kill me.

Go the SSV then you will never wonder what if .... later on.

Go the SS mate...just bought one for work car 08 plated for tad over $40k....drives better than my GTS, they are a good thing:)

Tad over? Just ran the numbers and unless you work for the government you should be paying 45k on a fleet discount scheme with a "bargain" price on an 08 plater.

And drives better than your GTS? Are you insane?

I got my SSV, 08 plated, with Sunroof, DVD and a few other dealer extras for 48K with Fleet discount and GST rebate, why wouldn't a bare bones SS go for a tad over 40K with no extras?

Maybe his GTS isn't a VE??

You certainly post some dribble on this forum:flip3:

I went for the SSV and never looked back. I looked at what HSV had to offer but I could not justify the cost difference of about 10K to the Clubsport which came with cloth seats as standard. I test drove the GTS, clubsport and SSV. All great rides but had to factor in the cost of mods to the equation. As a result, the SSV was by far, the best bang for your buck. Apart from brakes and the GTS MRC suspension, the the SS and SSV are outstanding value for money. :)

Have to say the SS is a better daily driver car and the GTS a better grand tourer. As i said the SS is a good package for the cost.....and yes Steve LS2, i've seen you dribble on a few occasions:flipoff:

Been thinking about upgrading the vy, was really looking at an SSV but i see they only come with leather seats.. I dont like leather seats so would I be able to order an SSV with cloth trim or could the dealer change it over from a car in the lot...???
How easy is it to get the seats changed in a new car before delivery...????

Wonky
10-02-2008, 10:34 PM
SSV can't be ordered from the factory with cloth seats. I'm sure the dealer could organise a swap for you with someone with an SS who wants to upgrade but would probably only do it as a straight swap or at most rebate you a few hundred.

The upgrade to leather is $2,500 but you also get side curtain airbags. However, when I just checked the Holden website to check that it says "leather seat inserts". Does that mean the upgrade doesn't equate to the seats in the SSV as standard?

Anyway, back to my original thinking - I reckon your best bet if you really want cloth seats is order your SSV and advertise on here (and elsewhere?) that you will swap seats with someone with an SS with cloth seats for a cash difference. I reckon you should get seats swapped with probably $1250+ difference. Better in your pocket than the dealer's! :yup:

If the $2500 upgrade to leather on an SS doesn't give the same end result as the standard SSV seats but only inserts then you'll almost certainly do even better out of it!

11-02-2008, 07:30 PM
Yeah mate, i am pretty sure they are a different leather seat in the ss and sv6 even though it is another $2500. The car I had for a day was a brand new sv6 ute with the leather option and it definately was different to the seats in the ssv.
