Gday fellas,
had to create a thread about my weekend and how disappointed i am with my purchase of a GEN3 v8...its my first v8 and had some big expectations..
yesterday my mate tried to drag me in his 1.6 litre AUTOMATIC laser...at about 90km/h he planted it and i also let loose and he was right next to me at 110km/h which is amazing...also thats not all...i find that the ls1 below 2000rpm is as slow as my mercedes which is a 2.3 manual...i have a VX calais with extractors and twin 2.5inch system...has anyone else got a gutless v8:(
Cheers

im a mechanic :D its running sweeet as it can...serviced every 5000km and has done 80000km all up...i just cant believe that for a v8 it feels less responsive than a 3.8litre commo...i have beaten skylines, 200sx's,180sx's..but yesterday made me almost cry when he was right there next to me at nearly 120km/h...

Go and stick it on a dyno and see what numbers its throwing out at the wheels.
It could be a magnitued of things on whats causing it to be sluiggish.

hey Adam, mate you should get it tuned, i know you would have spent a chunk of money buying the car, but seriously a tune would go a long way, especially on a vx calais, maybe the previous owner had a dud tune??
its a good rig, no doubt about that!!!!
guaranteed you will find a solution on this site..:yup:

Try getting a tune done.
From a forum sponsor, the damage is approx $500 for a mail order one and apparently, the change in shift points and the extra torque all through the range really wake up an auto LS1.

I've got a big 20tonne barge with a tune and cat back and it sure as hell wouldnt let some f$%d laser keep up with it if I dropped it back doing 90.
Press go peddle = :woohoo:
My Grange is nothing special speed wise compared to a lot of the cars on here but your calais should do a lot better than that I would have thought.
I will say this though that after I got my tune done the downshift as soon as I stabbed the throttle even slightly was 100% better that standard.
I'd say take if to a sponser mate and get them to have a quick look at it for ya.

another thought, have u checked your throttle cable isnt shagged? because at 90 even with a dodgy tune you should leave the laser for dead...

Thats what it comes down to..ive been reading on this site for a little while now and on my list of mods were to get a OTR and a mail order mafless tune..which i hope will give me the same results as most of the guys have been geting here...but on my current wages and party habits :D its going to take a while before i can afford to do so...have just spent few dollars on fixing my camber on the back so that my tires last longer than 3 months...
Thanks for the advice...ill see how i go once i get a good mafless tune and intake system...theres 2 tuners that i know of which are Chipmasters and Oztrack...leaning towards Chipmasters as they are in my neck of the woods...

I will check the trottle cable tonight see how i go..i am starting to think its my auto trans...it was replaced at 40000km i was told by previous owner and an aftermarket AC Delco 460LE was used...im not sure but it seems to rev and catch in forth and sometimes does not down shift to second and only third at around 90-100

Something wrong there mate, my VX SS is stock except for a cat back system, I manually select 3rd for overtaking in the country and mine has instant response and really hammers in 3rd gear. Maybe you were in 4th and at the wrong revs, you would be surprised how far 3rd will wind out and not being an overdrive gear it is heaps more responsive. Also at 90kph it should have kicked down if you gave it full throttle, maybe even went back to 2nd.

You should have been able to pull away from him without any hassle :(
Have you changed the major service items - plugs, leads, etc?
Get to a forum sponsor ASAP and get them to check her out first, get the problem rectified, then OTR/Tune :)

You should be able to toast any laser at any speed in a VX V8.
Has to be a joke right...?
A automatic laser (of all transmissions for these cars), pulled just as hard as an ls1 on the run?
Most ls1s would be hitting 140-150 before he hits 110.

Absolutely!! A dyno run should only cost you around $50 max, especially from a forum sponsor who knows you hope to bring it back for future enhancements. :)

Sporano, did your car kick down? If not, it's a gearbox issue. Even if it kicked down to 3rd, I don't find a Laser staying with you over a 20km/h increment that surprising. 2nd should blow him away though.
Here's a little exercise - a stock (VX) LS1 puts out 225(fw)kW at 5200rpm, and peak torque of 460Nm at 4400RPM. As we all know, it's peaky - not a lot of torque down low. A 1.6 Laser has peak output of about 78kW @5500RPM. Remember that power is torque*engine speed.
Stuck in 4th at 90, you'd be doing 1620RPM, and I'd guesstimate you'd only have about 320Nm available - which gives 54kW output. Easy even for a Laser (if it's at high revs, which your mate probably was).
Kick back to 3rd, you'd be doing about 2315RPM, guesstimate 350Nm, so 85kW. A laser could go close to that revving its box off - maybe not quite, but then it's a lot lighter so doesn't need quite as much power to keep up.
Hit 2nd at 90, though, and you're at 3760RPM and just getting into the "meaty" part of the torque curve ... about 400Nm or more, which gives 157kW and you're disappearing into the distance rapidly.
In stock form, you need to REV an LS1 to shift its lazy arse. :jester:

IMO LS1 performance is a little boring unless their tuned.
They are not slow though, they are quick, but boringly quick if you know what I mean. :)
As far as being as slow as other cars you mentioned, well I doubt that.
Must be something wrong with it if it is.
Just my 2c.

sounds like my vy a4 ss
I would think there is something wrong if the auto did not kick back and rocket away. In the standard WL 5.7 it is more a matter of trying to not go too fast when passing from 90kph as it kicks back and goes up to 140kph without trying. And that is in normal mode, but with the foot right down as I am used to the passing speed of bikes so prefer to spend not much time on the wrong side of the road.

I used to own a Ford Laser hatch 1.6 (manual) and i used to ring that out to 120 in 2nd gear!!! pretty impressive imo, but always got eaten alive by a mates VS SS and an LS1 VX. Maybe a tune should do it???? a v8 should kill a shitty 4 cylinder lol!

I ALWAYS thought that when I got my first A4 Gen III, compared to my 5L I thought it was terrible under 3K, I bought a Monaro then in an A6 and it was streets ahead, but still not good enough (I thought).
I have a VS SS as a comparo now, and my god I was so wrong, even standard the LS1 kills it, my 'ro is tuned (12 months now) and it is a weapon, and it still has 3:46!!!

Maybe try letting the handbrake off and dont drive the auto with two feet. Maybe the floor mat is hard up under pedal and your only getting 50% throttle.

this laser was a freak...but maybe it was just because it was a hot day and i had a mate in the car plus the tow bar all adds up...but i will look into getting a tune done with maybe a K&N pannel filter...
the skyline and 200sx i only started coming back around that 90-100kph...im a big fan of low end accel...after speaking to afew peeps....v8s are not really good down low...i also got a qoute of $1000 to put 3.73 in the rear which should give me lil bit more geeeez down low...

I have to agree, I think if I ever buy another V8, I will be buying a manual. My V6 went alright in an auto, but my LS1 SS just seems to be a bit doughier. I drove a mate's VX SS M6 a while ago, and it pulled how I expected a V8 to pull.
But I can't imagine a four cylinder Lazer auto or manual keeping up with you the way you have explained it. Instead of spending money on mods, get it looked at first. Otherwise you are only putting covering the whole with timber instead of filling it up. ;)

get the basic bolt ons for your 230-240rwkw
extractors, cats, zorst, otr and mafless
you'll gain 40rwkw one would think and it will be far more responsive.

My VX Calais LS1 stock tuned sucked big time. No power once you put the foot down at all. A PT edit made a huge difference :)
Get the Monaro CAI while you're at it as well (if you don't go OTR).

The stock VX tune is horrific. It has ridiculously low spark timing below 2000rpm and the only model that is worst is the VX HSV 255 tune. That along with very rich mixtures makes them terribly lazy. Tuned it can accelerate much better at part and full throttle everywhere.

I have no troubles in my stock VY SS in torching boosted skylines and wrxs. I'll admit that under 2500rpm its a bit of a slug, but over that it's just see you later stuff
