Hi guys. I'm currently looking at a VZ calais 5.7 litre with 81000ks on it. Whats the current going rate for something like this? I has a full body kit and the car looks immaculate from what I can tell. The guy is asking $33000. What things should I look out for when test driving - is there any common problems for this model? I hear that the 5.7 can be an oil burner.
Also would getting a VE be a much better choice? They're quite a bit (at least $10000) more expensive than the calais I'm looking at, and I hate the fact that you can't upgrade the stereo. I'll be upgrading from a VP calais so I think both cars would drive like a dream compared to it.
Although I'd be paying cash the budget is a bit tight at the moment and I'd like to keep the price down. What would you offer the guy for the VZ if you were buying one?
Cheers
That's really expensive for a VZ, you should not be paying any more than 25 for a similar car - check out the link

Good luck on the car hunting - the VY/VZ Calais are a clean looking car. Have you thought about the supercharged 6?

On a VZ, any oil issues were long since resolved..I myself upgraded to a VZ SS 4 months back, after driving around a VN calais...Its like chalk and cheese..Good luck with whatever you decide to buy..You be stoked with it.. I paid 32K for my SS with 43K on the clock from a dealer...I would offer 25 for the calais, and be prepared to walk away if he won't budge.Also find out what is the insurance value of it, and don't pay more for the car than what it is insured for...

Yeah I bought my VY II Calais for $26k about 6 months ago. Had 61,000kms on it.
Mate for a few thousand more than what he's asking, you can get a 2nd hand VE Calais. There's plenty around for less than $40,000.
I'd have sold you my VE Calais for $35,000! lol

Ok I have just been looking at a few different vz calais today.
One that I'm looking at is an 05 model (delivered in april 06 so the new car warranty remains until april 09), blue, 5.7litre, 35000ks, leather seats, drives fine almost feels like a demo. The price they wanted was $39990 but a good friend of mine who knows the boss there got the price down to $32990 with a detail and a full tank of premium.
Would that be a good deal? Or should I keep looking at the market for a better price for a similar car?
You guys are very helpful cheers.
BTW with the VE I think I'd have to look at a calais v to get the same feature level as the VZ and I'm interested in a v8 so I don't think $35000 would be acheivable.
Just found the car on carsales.com take a look here;

For resale purposes an 05 will always remain an 05....to test this out try trading one in :)
It does sound like an extra nice example,however the price is still stacked in there favor by an excess margin imho....as an example ,last weeks dealer raffle QLD WL Caprice passed in at 26K ....VZ 05 Calais Gen111 in storm grey 30,000K traveled sold 27.5K
imho the rrp of the Calais should be bang on $29995 :)
Edit..after viewing car sales ad ,I'd be very surpised if 30K in Folding didn't own it outright .....driveaway..

What would be a resonable offer for this one;
http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/private/HOLDEN/CALAIS/details.aspx?__Ntk=CarAll&__D=vz%20calais&Cr=1&State=Western%20Australia&R=5019575&state_id=83&keywords=vz%20calais&__N=83+834+285+257&distance=25&__Ns=pCar_PrivateSpecialFlag_Int32|1||pCar_ImageCo unt_Int32|1||pCar_LastModifiedDate_DateTime|1&__Ntt=vz%20calais&trecs=2&__Nne=20&__Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&silo=1003&__sid=117C87C11C31&seot=0&__Dx=mode+matchany
$33000 maybe?

Driveaway meaning stamp duty included? If so I'd definately give that a try.

The same imho.......works on year / mileage etc .....7000ks is not enough to throw an extra 3 on top.....I can sell you a VE Calais in the colour of your choice for those dollars...mind you thats for a V6...8 will cost you another 8K :)..tis the nature of the used car market..a fickle beast at times..and yes driveaway is just that..all on road included bar comp insurance and Government transfer fees...don't cop that on road $800.00 for RWC charge..its BS

Well I offered him 30k in folding and the response was negative. He won't budge from 32990. Worth a try though hey.

Now repeat the offer anonymously through the cars sales ad :).....he already knows you were on the car and don't for one second forget the collusion between your discounted mates rate price and the same price appearing on car sales as full retail ask....gotta read between the lines ....*The price they wanted was $39990 but a good friend of mine who knows the boss there got the price down to $32990 with a detail and a full tank of premium. ...:)
Good luck....but stick to yer guns....its a buyers market out there and don't let anyone tell you differently..if all else fails....fly East

Ok guys I caved and bought the one mentioned in post 7. After a lot of looking I couldn't find a better deal in Perth. I'm happy! BTW Mark I just noticed your final reply. That would have been a good idea.
