gday all my mrs.'s 96 Astra is having a few problems lately, although its gotten worse today. heres the list:

the high beams will flick on and off without touching the stalk, but will not flash when the stalk is pulled back, so i believe the stalk is buggered.

the a/c fan will only work on level 4, the system itself is fine as you can hear the difference when turning it on, but the fan/blower will only work on the highest level, turning it down effectively turns it off. would this be the switch (as im thinking), or something more major?

and the main problem: today apparently she was driving it and the dash and headlights turned off. ive had a look and the relays and fuses seem fine, the bulbs are fine, and the switch/dial doesnt seem untoward. occasionally the dash lights will come on when the dial is turned, but not the headlights (whether turned to parkers or lowbeams, the dash lights will come on but not the headlights). any ideas as to what this could be? i wouldve said a relay had blown but i dont think the dash lights would come on with the switch if this were the case?

Indicator stalks are common, and cheap at about $40. If you're lucky, might even fix the headlight/dash light issue as well! Replace the stalk first, then see how you go.
Heater fan issue is common. Needs a new fan resistor. Bit over $100 from memory.

cool thanks davo, turns out she has rung a sparky to look at it tomorrow but thanks anyway. they ask you to do all the work, then give up on you at the last minute!

FYI - Astra parts can be ridiculously expensive in Australia. If you do need expensive parts try http://www.autovaux.co.uk/ I've now bought throttle bodies, timing belt kits and water pumps from them for my wife's AH Astra. Arrive in about a week and landed cost is about 1/3 of the price here! :goodjob:
