Hi Guys,
I'm thinking of pumping up the bass somewhat and am looking at sub/amp packages. My first preference would be Alpine then Pioneer. Alpine has a twin sub package which includes the MRP-M650 V-Power series amp and 2x SWS-1223D subs for $649 + install (sub $900). Do subs always have to be enclosed in boxes? Can they be mounted behind the rear seat wall in the boot ? Any recommendations/tips would be appreciated and pics of setups would be great :)
Cheers

ps Any recommended installers in Perth (SOR if possible)

If you don't put them in a box or an enclosure of some kind, then you basically won't hear a thing (except maybe the sound of a normal speaker if the filter is set high)
UNLESS!! the boot itself may be just the right size to act as a box, but it would have to be a very large sub =P

and the boot would have to be air sealed, which it isn't.
get a pro to make you a custom box, that way it will look like it belongs there.

Check the car audio section on here, particularly the thread(s) by vxclubby85 (Adrian) who works for a company who does a lot of that stuff. He is right up with all the good stuff. eg Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=73969)
Also if you haven't seen it check out the EXCESSV's thread on what he did with his SSV audio system over there in Perth.

There are two ways you could do this without a "box"
1) You can mount a sub to a baffle behind the back seats using the boot as the enclosure and the seats as an aperiodic membrane, but to optimise the subs output you'd need to completely seal the boot space.
2) Use "free air" subs mounted in your parcel shelf.
Either of these compromise output therefore if you're really into doof doof you'll need a box. Ported boxes are generally louder than sealed.
If you're going the prefab box & sub route out of those two i'd go with the Alpine pack BUT look around as there may be better options available.
