my gearbox was making some noises so i decided to go get it checked...
and so far its pretty bad!....

Labour to ouverhaul box $770
Input shaft $795
bearings $695
all the syncros 1st - reverse $660.58
Main shaft $607.20
5th/6th gear $574
oil $44
Sealer $32
opps???(dunno what this is) $11
clutch kit $1490.35

so $5680

or second hand parts with 80,000ks on it for $4880.35

does this all sound like im being ripped off..

i went and saw the gearbox in pieces and he showed me what was wrong. i have no real reason not to believe what he's saying..and its meant to be a good auto repairer... i just don't know about the price...

You can get 2nd hand ones in good nick for anywhere between $1400 and $2000. I only paid $1000 for mine, out of a car with ~30k kms on it.

Ring Mal Wood, he does exchange boxes for good rates. Havent bought a T-56 but an M20 came at a good price. otherwise holmart or wreckers, 6k for rebuild pffft tell him he's dreaming

rustle rustle rustle....... :bawl:

did you get your accident damage fixed?

Rustle
13-02-2008, 02:17 PM
not really, but that part of it is all taken care of..its just while they were looking for things wrong they found this stuff..and its not caused by the accident so not under insurance
but the quote should be with NRMA by now and that should take a week or so they say..

its just the gearbox that i'm worried about right now...its been almost 2 months without my car :bawl::bawl:

VT-VZ all take the same gearbox's.

Put the later model gearbox in as it has better gear ratio's.

not to mention almost half the price you've been quoted.

Agreed - I purchased a recon T56 (from VY) from Mal Wood, very happy. Great service, this guy knows his stuff inside out.

Even give Mal a call to ask for advice, he will steer you clear of trouble.

Good luck mate, hope you get it sorted for as little as is required.

I stuffed my Auto gearbox and my car is at RVO in Keysbourough right now and they are charging me $2000 for a full rebuild including toughnening it up to be able to handle 350HP at the wheels with 1 year warranty. Not sure but I would think manual is simpler to rebuild so should cost less. RVO guys built the first LS1 auto transmission that can handle 1000HP and these are a bit more pricy but goes to show they know what they are doing. I am paying $3000 because Im getting a stall converter fitted also.

The bleeding obvious solution has allready been pointed out.

Buy a fkn new gearbox.

Rustle
14-02-2008, 02:02 PM
well i did the rounds got some prices

a few places actually said the price i was quoted is right...

a new gearbox alone is about $4500 + exchange...a reco one $3800 + exchange

i gotta see 1 more person this arvo he seems to have some cheaper options

but Canberra seems to pretty damn expensive compared to everywhere else!!

I bet the original shop is quoting Holden prices but will probably buy it from Holmart or the like anyway

If you are serious about getting a gearbox do yourself & us a favour by getting in touch with Holmart. That should be the last call you need to make on the matter

Cheers & good luck with it.

It will fit it is the same gearbox you have in your car now. Go and see a forum Sponsor and get a quote to fit it and order it and get it sent to them. There is a freight service from Melbourne that can send the new box to you.

A brand newie for $2850 or rebuild your one for $5860 It's a no brainer mate.

cheers

If you're not sure who to believe ... talk to the guys @ GENTECH in Canberra, they're local to you and LS1 specialists.

They should be able to help you.

To add my 20 cents worth ... you don't need to go interstate to fix it. Get the gearbox sent to GENTECH or someone similar and have them fit it for you.

New gearbox $2850
+
freight (Say $250 ... I'm guessing)
=
$3100.

Even if fitment costs you $500 ... you're still WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of the $5680 being currently quoted.

A T56 is a T56 from VTII - VZ. The bolt pattern to the back of the LS1 engine is the same.

Good luck ... hassles like this are a major PITA.

Gentech was the first place i went to....
$3800 for reco
$4500 for new...

but i found one for $2000 i'm gonna get the car towed to gentech, they quoted me $300 to fit that..and i found a clutch for $990

Thank you all for all your help.
a lot of the prices people were telling me were a bit off.
I went to quite a few places and they all pretty much told me the same thing $4500 for new + exchange and between $2k - $4k reco.

i can hear it now
"well you should have done what i said in the first place" :clown:

i weighed those ways up and it just wasn't the right way for my situation, money, time, work.
but i did look into it.

Thanks anyway for all your help, this has been an eye opener:shock:

I live in canberra and my friend Craig just bought from Holmart a brand new L76 Crate motor (6 litre) and M6 6speed for a little over $7000 delivered to Canberra all in a week. They are going to put the pressure on a lot of reco companies with those prices.

Just to wrap up this thread, i got the car back yesterday after 2 and a half months of it being off the road, it being with the insurance and all

but i missed her so much!...

I took it down to gentech and got them to fit the gearbox, Xtreame Clutch, ripshifter and remote bleed line (from Mal Wood)

I just wanna say thanks to the boys at gentech for fitting it all

the new clutch s***s all over the standard clutch and the ripshifter is awesome!!
Thanks everyone on here for all your help
