Sorry , but you will be paying stamp duty......and more

2/ There is no transferring of vehicle registration into QLD from interstate, you'll need to apply for new QLD reg with current QLD safety cert...or RWC in old language..after canceling NSW Reg

...So enjoy your trip to the pits.

You're better off buying one out of the Sunday paper.

You'll be paying the stamp duty, and then when you take the car over the pits you can almost guarantee walking out of the there with $1000+ of things that need to be done to it.

Registered one of my old (bought unregistered) cars just last friday, they were so busy they didn't even have a look at it, didn't even question the half value I put on the form.

You don't go over the pits for changing states?

Over here (wa) any car coming from any other state needs to take a trip to the pits... Or that might only apply to cars of a certain age.

If it was previously registered in QLD then they do not now inspect , unless the operators computer waves a red flag. same also applies to ex interstate vehicles now.......However SPOT inspection are still part of the norm...aprox ratio, 1 in 100 cars

Stamp duties payable are also checked over by inspectors at random times..moral of the story..don't be silly..an 05 model Commodore is not sold for $500......yes  some punters are that silly..or greedy,

i am just in the process of changing the rego of my sa plated commodore to qld and i had to get a rwc, and as previously stated you will have to pay stamp duty, the ideas is to place a lowish value on it but be careful not to go to low or else they will sting you, they will just put a market value on it and then charge you stamp duty on that, and im sure they would prolly throw in some sort of penalty as a deterrent for next time.

I no that i will have to get a RWC and thats not a problem as it will pass that easy, Just asking because im buying it off my old man and will be getting at a real good price so justwondering if they will say anything due to having a low price on a dearer car. Thanks

My BMW was last registered in NSW, brought it to QLD where it sat around for awhile (2 years or so), it was pretty rough and I got a good price for it (no where near market val). My $8000 paid wasn't a lie, I had a letter from the previous owner stating that the car was purchased for that amount and that amount reflected the condition of the car. Since fixed it all up (total spend around $3000), and is worth a bit more now (around $20k) but the amount I paid is legit. QLD DOT require proof of purchase, so just get your old man to write a letter and sign it stating that he owned the car and sold it to you for $x amount - you'll prob have to sign a stat-dec aswell. Stamp Duty isn't that much anyways unless you get up into the $40ish k plus.

If you have something from your dad then it should be ok, if it was from someone outside of the family then it would be a problem but as some family's give cars to each other within the family group there is not much they can do.

Just remember its 3% or 3 dollars out of every hundred you will need to pay for Stamp duty in qld.

If you can, get the car co-registered in both names in NSW, then take it to Qld for a RWC and you are already an owner of the car and can be registered in your name up there without paying a cent in stamp duties :)

I think you will find that you would qualify for an exemption in duty because you are buying off a family member and the duty has already been paid interstae....i have a vehicle rego application here and it states that under the exemptions section on the back..#4...so go for it!:eyes:
