The one I am looking at buying (Supercheap item) says 'Keep in a cool place'. It doesn't say how cool anywhere on the packaging. I'm thinking of installing it in the boot just to the left of the battery compartment lid. Any opinions?
Cheers guys

Don't skimp on cheap extinguishers, buy the best like Quell or worlmald, HSV use them in the boot as factory fit item, circuit racers, ie hsv club track days, it is mandatory to have a 1kg extinguisher within hand reach of the driver in the cabin. Every one of our work vehicles on the mines has one fitted in the cab. Need anymore evidence?........

Looks good installed in the boot but for functionality try to keep it within reach of the driver as 6L.Club said...then if anything does happen, electrical or fuel then its right there so minimal damage is done to the burning components!

Make sure you buy one that has been CAMS approved.
I have mine mounted on the transmission tunnel on the passenger side and never had a problem, keep an eye as the gauge would read a higher pressure if the contents heated up too much.

My fire extinguisher in the R8 is on the right hand side above my stacker in the boot. Factory fitted by HSV
Dont skimp buy an approved device & you should have no worries.

If you do a an dry powder extinguisher, take it out occasionally and give the bottle a tap to keep the contents loose. I discovered the hard way when another car had an engine fire that my extinguisher's powder had compacted and did bugger all to putting out the fire...

Just out of interest mounting a fire extinguisher in the car, would u be able to get a discount off ur insurance?
I hear you get a break with insurance if you have one in the car.. I have one in my wagon in the back. I've had no problems with the heat in the car.

In the VY can you fit it just beside the seat attached to the pillar

Interesting.... I know Telstra actually removed them from all telstra vehicles due liability issues. They are quite happy to have the driver step back and let the car burn to the ground rather than risk a staffmember getting injured then oing on workers comp while fighting a fire.

But has anyone ever had to use theirs???
Either on there own car or on someone elses???

Safe to leave in the car - Yes. Good idea to have one. I have always had one in the car for the last 20 years fo piece of mind.
Safe to leave in the car - NO! - When some bastards broke into my car and couldn't work out how to get it started (couldn't even steal the stereo!) they let the fire extinguisher off inside the cabin. 1kg of white powder goes a long long way! It got into every nook & cranny and was coming out of the air vents. I was still finding it in places 6 months down the track. Looked like a snow storm inside the car.

I had one in my EG Civic cause back in the day it was cool to have a fire extinguisher,
anyway it sat there in my boot mounted next to my sub and amp
Doosh Doosh
anyway long story short was going to a meeting and was on albany hwy Vic park in front of a NAB bank where I was backed up in traffic and up ahead I saw a whole bunch a ppl gathering..
so as I got closer I saw this guy with his top ofF beating his car's engine bay because it was on Fire
everyone was just looking on an doing nothing
so I cool as a Cucumber Stop my car get out open the boot, meanwhile the traffic is looking at me like WTF is this retard doing???
I grab my Trusty Fire extinguisher Strut over with it....Put the fire out, and the bloak ws all like thank-you so much and shit, and I was LIke your cool, your just lucky I was here
Hopped back in my car with everyone looking at me CLAPING!!!!
an at that Moment I relised I was A HERO!!
So moral of this story is if you want to be a Real life Hero and Pull chick's/Guys*

So, despite your story, you don't have one now? Nyuk nyuk.
On rare occasions they can be handy, yes - but I also suggest a warning triangle and an EN471/AS 'safety vest'. Be of no doubt, these items *will* be a standard feature in new market cars, vans, 4WD's in the future in any case.
The triangle, also currently 'mandatory' in EU/China etc is kept in the boot area.
I suggest 'one' warning triangle to Euro/UN spec on the basis that each year in Australia we get more than;
600,000 reported road crashes!
[Resulting in - 200,000 reported injuries, 22,000 serious injuries requiring long-term treatment and care, and 1,700 people killed in road crashes]. (AAA). The triangle, placed properly reduced or eliminates secondary crash occurrence, or its occurence in the first place when used near a crassh scene or breakdown. Harzard lights alone are only part of the answer.
In EU, all cars have the mandatory vest - per each seat, typically stored in side pockets or in the under seat tray et al. Heck, even gasp, Supercheap have em $9-16.
The fire extinguisher is mandatory in a couple of EU states and Russia and is 'optional' elsewhere in that region. The item remains an 'option' in a new UN Road Traffic Convention under development, whilst the triangle and vest is requested as mandatory of states parties.
Advocacy;
Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for your car to improve the ‘warning-time’ given to approaching traffic, at both crash scenes and vehicle breakdowns. Store it in the boot. I suggest Hella Part Number 2901 - $70, or from Auto Accessory Shops, - supplier "Prokit" - Item Number RG9212 - $20. A World/Euro standard triangle device exceeding AS3790 triangle performance requirements. http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/lic_drivesafebook_part4.pdf

I've got two in my ute - both CAMS approved!
1 resides on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel - easy to reach from the drivers seat, yet no risk of becoming a projectile in an accident or getting caught under the pedals.
The second resides in the tray @ the back left corner. That one is more for if someone else 's car is on the side of the road burning.
