Dropped by the local Malz store here in Cannington WA and picked up a GMC orbital polisher for $49 !. Tried it out with some fantastic results. What used to take probably 5 or so minutes per panel to buff now takes about 2. Much more even results and less strain on the arms and elbows. Highly recommended !
ps You still have to manually go over areas where the pad can't reach though. Oh and I use Megs Nxt Gen Tech Wax....great stuff !

I've been toying with the idea of an orbital sander but from my net research it sounds like if you don't know what you're doing you can really stuff the paint. (I don't have a 1972 corolla to practise on.) However, despite my best efforts I still cannot remove all swirl marks from my black car using just elbow grease, so yeah, curious if this method works on the swirls.... :1peek:

Is it a random orbital one? In the hands of many people anything but a random orbital sander is likely to stuff your paint, whereas with a random orbital you would need to deliberately set out to cause damage in order to actually cause any.

What polish are you using with the Random Orbit Buff??

I use a variable speed/torque polisher (with fine foam pad) on mine about once a year. I use Farecla G10 compound. The compund is very fine and removes swirls and oxidization. With the Phantom Blacks as most of you know swirls are a pain in the ass. After the cut I wash the car thoroughly, dry and then apply 3 coats of any reputable wax 4 hours apart. Makes for a long day but the results are incredible. Probably the deepest looking finish you have seen.
Beyond that just a normal wash once a week and a touch up wax twice a year suffices. Cleaning your car is such a pleasure when its waxed/polished properly.

I broke my festo sander out of retirement & spent 8 1/2 hrs on the avalanche with some poorboys products. To say that the avalanche has a deep shine is an understatement. I suppose that 4 layers of nattys will do that.

I have a black one as well:eyes:, I did clay bar, then 1 coat of wax, I Thaught lt looked pretty good. Honest dumd inquiry, how does the 3 coat wax work?
Is it wax on, wax off x 3, or is it 3 coats of wax then wax off. I'm thinking the first one .

wax on wax off karate kid style then wait 4 hrs to cure and repeat. you can even go day about but would need to wash between waxes of course

Sean
You can use any of the market swirl removers, e.g. McGuires, Mothers etc. If you are going to do it by hand you will need some good hand buffing pads. If you want to save a good days work or have no experience I would suggest taking it to a reputable detailer.

Hey Boyley,
Thanks for the heads-up on that one.
I have been trying to digest as much of the forum as possible but had missed that one.
Sounds like a good event, I will definately be there (as a spectator this time)
I know we are now a little off topic...
BUT don't you reckon that someone should have added this to the calender on the forum????.
Thanks again Boyley.

Chris, apparently once you get validated you get access to a lot more on the forum. If you keep an eye on "The Tar Pit" Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=66) it regularly points out where Validation opportunities are arising and also private meets and cruises etc.
Hope to meet you there on the 2nd of March mate, should be a good day.

The drag day has been added on March 2nd ... hope to see you there.

Yeah sorry NickS, didn't mean it as a flame...
I will definately be there (confirmed with the cheese & kisses this arvo).
Would have a run myself but I will be enjoying free grog at a Wedding the night before, therefore I can't see myself making it to scrutineering at 8am.
I will be cheering on the lads from the spectator area and enjoying a pie with my young bloke though.:)
See you all there!

Yep, great job if it is an orbital and not random orbital! :yup: You are either experienced or naturally very good as most newbies do more damage than good to their paint with an orbital sander! As I said in an earlier post, it is almost impossible to do damage with a random orbital sander unless that is your intent.

I had another look at the box and found out that it is a random orbital :) and it actually cost $39 instead of $49 !
I've never used a mechanical polisher before but have heard and read a lot about personal experiences with one so I took it nice and easy when I first switched it on. It was real easy to quickly get used to it. The most tricky bit for me is the front spoiler where there are lotsa corners and edges.

So to clear this up your just using it slowly to apply Wax or are you buffing it and waxing cos if your gently apply wax with it it should cause that many problems. I think people are under the inpression youve done some paint correction which i doubt being that you have a new car.

I'm sure its got a few swirls on it as I noticed some about a month after I bought it. Will take some pics after the next time I wax and buff.

Yeah its a VE (09/07) and still in good nick. The main reason I bought the orbital was to save my arms and elbows a bit and it also does cut down on the polishing time.
Some swirls are already noticeable as stated in my prev post and I know its unavoidable especially with a black car.

Malz $39  (see post #25)

Nope. It only has one speed so I am using it solely for buffing. I apply the Tech Wax by hand as usual. No paint correction yet as the swirls are still pretty minor (the car was manuf in 09/07). Might have some work to do in a few months though :(

Great find mate ! Awesome price. I've only ever used the lambswool pad on mine. I apply the wax by hand with one of those Megs applicators.
Also, my tip, go easy till you get used to what it can do. Have fun !

Yeah thanks for the tips SSTEALTH.
I am hoping that the price is not an indicator of quality and that it is a bargain (still haven't rec'd it yet).
I am always torn between envy and sympathy when I look at BLACK cars. (They look great but needs lots of TLC to maintain).
It certainly looks like you have the TLC covered though!
My rides colour is "Odyssey" and is about a year old (I don't think it has ever had a polish). I am hoping to make it sparkle like new !!
Cheers mate.

G'Day mate
I bought a similar package from Supercheap which only consisted of a foam and microfibre pad. They both had the elastic garter around the hole unlike the pull string type that came with the polisher. The bad news is once I put the new pads on and turned it on they just spun right off! :spew:
I guess the elastic wasn't strong enough to hold it on to the pad. Let me know if yours works as I could do with some new pads soon.
Cheers !
Carlos
