If you want something cheap try Atomik, chinese bikes.
The 250 has big disc brakes and looks the part but only costs 1750 new! They have a shop in Moorabbin where you can get parts and service, new motor is 450.
They have a pretty wide range of bikes and buggies and if it isnt for hardcore riding or motox then Id give em a go for the small outlay.

the guys down there race a few of them and say they are pretty good.
I dont have any first hand experience with them and always say stick to the big brands for bikes but for farm and trail Id give one a go.
2 brothers motorcycles is the name of the place 192 chesterville rd moorabbin, 95530810.
Might be worth a look.
Otherwise a nice enduro depending on what you want to spend.

At this stage Yamaha have just brought out a new WR250R bike.

Not as hardcore as the WR250F bikes..
These are made to be ridden on the road.
And they look the part as well...
I think the starting price is around $9500 mark..

Suzuki DR400. Proven, reliable, strong. Great fun off road too and isnt too cranky for farm work either.

The DR400 isn't that angry a beast. Nothing like the Yamahaha Wr range...it's only going to go as hard as you twist the tube in your right hand :D

Look if you're worried about being inexperienced and you're mainly doing farmwork, why don't you just start on something bunky, like an ex-postie bike? After 6 months or whatever once you think you have the skills and/or confidence for something bigger, then get a full size dirt bike.

Whatever you do, don't buy one of those tragic bloody Chinese bikes :spew:

Honda XR250 mate ... hard to go wrong with one of those.

Perfect for what you want.

They do everything fairly well but nothing "spectacular" and are almost bulletproof.

The "right bike" for you is ultimately up to you. XR's have been around for yonks with proven reliability and enough power NOT to be scarey.

Hey Mate,

take a look at the Yamaha TTR 250, you can ride them on road and trail, they are awesome bikes and very reliable, not as high maintenance as the WR 250 etc. The new WR 250R looks good, but its a few thousand more than the TTR 250, they are bullet proof bikes, I own one which I use just for trail riding. I put some pure dirt tyres on, some new bars, some barkbusters and a new rear sprocket, other than that its stock, awesome bikes highly recommended. Think the retail on these is $7800 or so, you can pick them up cheaper if you look around.

Hope that helps.

hi i agree with the 2 guys that said buy an xr250 .but yry and find one that has been well looked after .they needed regular oil changes like all 4 stroke bikes and the early xr250 rf 1985 model im not sure about much of the later ones but the head didnt run shell bearings which without regular maintinance the cam would wear the head and would have to be machined out to suit shell type bearings.just ask the owner questionsto find a good one as they arnt cheap to rebuild as the same as all 4 strokes..if you can find an IT 200 in good condition they are bulletproof ..ps a new xr250 rf on road in 1985 was$2550..

Agree with the lads suggesting the XR250........

Just make sure it is the XR250R not the XR250L.

The L is overweight and under powered!!! the R of course is not exactly a race machine either, but it is a lot better than the L!

To the bloke suggesting the TTR 250 is awesome........ Have a rap on a WR or CRF and you'll quickly change your tune!! The TTR is a total BOS!!!

I agree with the XR250 or XR400. Both are extremely reliable and good workhorses for farm work and require very little maintenance, unlike the high reving WR's. The 400 has bit more power which you'll start to appreciate on trail rides when your confidence builds.
