Hello All,
I've got a set of 3.46 diff gears sitting in the shed at home. Because the only time I get to drive the VY is when we go on a trip (Hasn't been started for 7 weeks) I'm going to get them fitted. Can any one give me an idea on how much they would cost to get fitted? Should liven the A4 up a bit.

If you do a search on here you will find lots of threads talking about cost of doing diff gears. Pre VE prices are typically around the $1,200 mark and of that from memory new gears are about $600 of that, so the fitting should be around the $600 mark.

Is it a whole diff or just the ngears...
If its a whole diff should take about an hour to do if its fit hgears to your existing diff then as what Wonky has said...

Get some 3.9's and a good tune that'll liven it up a bit. Just speaking from experience ,The time and effort to put 3.46's in will leave you wondering why you bothered.

obviously its an auto(hence the reason upgrading to 3.46) 3.9s it will be revving its head of at 100kms like close to 3k, my old mans wh with 3.46 sits at about 2200 at 110kms

Thats crap about revving its head off at close to 3k, more like 2400rpm at 100km/h with 3.9s and a auto. Do it once and do it right, 3.9s all the way. I do mainly highway kays and do not regret one bit going the 3.9s, 3.73s would be a nice compromise if you can get them. If your going to the effort and expense to change diff gears dont bother with the 3.46s

i fitted a complete 3.46 to my ute and it cost me $400 if your going to get the gears fitted like the guys said go 3.9 or 3.7 ,dont get me wrong 3.46 did liven my ute up but i got it cheap thats why i fitted it,my next up grade will be 3.7 if i can ever get my hands on a complete diff for a good price, just getting the gears and fitted is a ripp off.

Yep, I agree. Getting hold of a complete diff with the ratio you want is a much better bet all round, although I'm not sure whether you can get them with 3.9 as standard. Think they only went to 3.73 but that would be a good compromise all things considered. I bought a low km complete 3.46 diff on here and had it fitted to my A4 VZ SS. When I sold that car with that diff still in it I then sold the original (very low km) 3.07 diff and the whole 3.46 diff with fitting ended up only costing me around $100. :)

I upgraded to 3.45s in my last car, the VQ, and i DEFINATELY noticed the difference off the line.
The commies in top gear cruise at 100Km/h at about 1800rpm. Whilst the car did rev a bit higher while cruising with the 3.45s, it was only an extra 200rpm at 100. 3.9s would pick your engine revs up by about 450rpm, which as i'm sure you can imagine won't be doing any favors for your fuel economy.
3.08s are good for cruising at low revs with good fuel economy. 3.9s are good for getting the power down to the wheels ASAP for maximum acceleration. 3.45s are sort of a half way ground. It's a personal choice really, you just need to figure out what your preference is.
If you're really stuck between choosing 3.45 and 3.9, you can always go a 3.7 which would increase your engine rpm by about 350rpm.
good luck making your mind up
