I've Just Had A Tune And A Pod Filter Fitted To My Ve Ss. The Filter Is Placed Below The Left Headlight. After Looking At The Capability Of The Air Flow It Seems As Though Insufficient Air Can Reach The Air Filter.
Has Anyone Drilled Out The Driving Lamp Facia To Allow More Flow To The Pod, Or Is There Something In The Aftermarket Arena I Can Replace The Facia With?

Cheers In Advance

Arnold,

You can remover the spot light surround and drill holes thru it,which will allow more to the pod setup,is there any reason you didnt go the over the radiator intake ?

Big Rob at Chev's does what is called a BRM (Big Rob Mod). I saw the proof with my very own eyes back last year on a cool May or June day. A VE SSV with CAI went out and did some spirited driving for 10 - 15 min and when it came back the metal pipe on the CAI was almost too hot to touch (from memory over 60C with a laser?? temperature probe).

It had the BRM done and went out for another 10 - 15 min of spirited driving. When it came back the metal pipe was cool to the touch - from memory only a few degrees above ambient.

I therefore booked in to have the BRM done on mine ASAP but it's unfortunately wasted now I have the OTR. Not worth transferring the metal scoop Rob fabricates to help funnel the air in because by the time you pay for the labour to drop the front bar and drill out the rivets holding it on you've probably paid for a new one.

Even though the pod setup does make a difference, you defantly were told the wrong advice, you cant go past the otr setup.

I guess it depends how much you paid for the pod and whether you could afford close to $700 for an OTR. Many pods these days have dropped to under $300 and do give a gain (and great induction noise :)) but I picked up 15rwkw with the Orrsom OTR over and above my pod filter. :woohoo:

Can someone please tell me if you can keep ur MAF and go OTR? As far as I can tell u cant and I dont want to deal with tha whole warranty issue at this stage by going MAFless. Had a pod setup on my VY SS and it wasn't bad at all, might go one on the VE if MAFless OTR is the only option on VE especially considering they are $250 kits on ebay.

I would much rather stick to the likes of the SS cold air intake i have now.. Over radiator, gets all the air it could ever want, and i like the whole stock looking bit as well...

I had a POD ... OTR is a lot nicer , and makes the car a lot more responsive.

Yes you can ... been running mine for 2 and a bit years now, no problem. I have a Sureflo OTR, which works wel, but I believe there are a couple of others that do MAF/MAFLESS.

Yes you can go OTR WITH MAF on a VE. :)

Orrsom OTR as fitted to Wonky's car picture (WITH MAF)

I don't know what other VE OTRs can still utilise the MAF.

Now the big question is how much $$$$

Dave beat me to it re VE OTR with MAF! :)

Cost me $660 inc delivery as an introductory offer when they were first released but I think they're now something like $695 + delivery if required. See Marrano's sponsor's forum as they are sold through there (as well as possibly other places).

Well worth it as I had tried 2 CAIs but the OTR picked up an extra 15rwkw over the CAIs! Plus it looks the most factory of all the VE OTRs I've seen so far.

PS In the pic above it looks like the OTR may be warped but it is completely an optical illusion.

If warranty is your concern, you can keep your original PCM and intake system for servicing and claims etc.

For the sake of around $1k for a MAFless tune and an OTR intake your gains will be enormous.

Take my advice do not waste money on pissy mods that get you naff all, as I did for the last 4 years. Save your dough and get what works.

Are you saying $1k for MAFless tune and OTR for $1k for tune only plus then cost of the OTR?

From all I've heard to date MAFless tunes on VE are much trickier than on previous models because of the way the VE (variable environment??) table on the VE is used by the faster PCM to calculate things on the fly rather than having everything already calculated in the table.

I know of people with VEs who have gone back to a MAF tune after having hassles with MAFless.

I actually just plucked the $1k figure out of me bum, as I just assumed this would be the approx combined cost. Apologies if I threw a spanner:eyes:

I'm sure there must be some successful MAFless VE tunes out there?

I think some MAFless tunes are getting down around the $1k mark (used to be $1,400 or so) and the VE OTRs are typically around $700 (see my previous post on the Orrsom VE OTR).

Wonky I have heard that after installing the OTRCAI the car runs really rich and needs a tune of some description, is that right? How did yours go after install?

Possibly true. Mine went rich (which surprised me as if anything as I expected more air in would mean leaner, but I am no expert) but it had already had a tune so the tune was tweaked. With no change to the tune it ran 255rwkw and after the tweak it was 262.

My uneducated guess is that apart from possibly hurting fuel economy a bit running a bit rich shouldn't hurt. If it ran lean that would be a different story - good way to make the motor go bang..... :(
