Now we know why the accident and death rate for semi crashes is so much higher lately.

Used to work for a trucking firm, and back before speed limiters and Toll / IPEC merged we used to joke that IPEC stood for I Pass Every C**t.

Looks like the Volvo was doing about 110 kph when he overtook the Kenworth, whats wrong with that ? I have seen speed differentials between trucks of 2-3 kph yet on the road it seems much greater than that due to the size of the trucks involved.

We contunually get members of the public ringing up complaining about our trucks from work doing over 120 kph on flat road overtaking cars. When checked the sat tracking shows them often doing way less than 100. The whole fleet is limited to 100kph yet I regularly seem to pass other vehicles quite quickly whilst not exceeding 100-102 kph on the highway. :)

cheers

The speedo's only on 100 kph.

Yep it's a standard Kenworth speedo and it's reading bang on 100.

cheers

Actually if his drive tyres were worn a bit it could have only been doing 95kph. Truck speedos like cars usually read a few k's over as well. Mine actually reads 107 @ 101.

The reason why the guy filming got a shock was because he didn't see the other guy comming as he was preoccupied.

That bloody fast. When I have to deliver our steel interstate I often see trucks going bloody crazy speeds, sometimes when those double b's go round corners I'm sure there gonna roll.

I was in a smaller truck once and the driver asked me to pull out a fuse and it turned out it was the speed limiter.

Cheers
Scotty

Yeah the Kenworth i drive reads 107 kph at a GPS checked 101 kph. By the turbo temp he's coasting down hill so it wouldn't take much to over run the limiter on the other truck.

A speed differential of 10kph is equal to a difference in speed of 2.77 metres per second. That means it would take a truck doing 110 kph 6.8 seconds to travel the length of a truck doing 100 kph (generally 19 metres in length). In the vid it takes less than 2 seconds from the moment you see the front of the truck until it's probably 10-15 metres down the road. Even just allowing for the Volvo to have travelled it's full length (19 metres) in that 2 seconds, it still works out to be to a speed differential of at least 34 kph. 134 kph + is a fair speed for something of that size and weight.

Note, the above is based on the Kenworth doing 100 kph as stated above...i'm not familiar with Kenworth speedo's ;)
