dont waste your time trying others.
Just car for me last year was $3080
for a vy ss ute
for mags, hard cover, exhaust
now this year is $2000
for hardcover, exhaust, extractors, lowered
so helped with the extra year since being with them and they also do pay by month now which helps....sort of
and to note a also have lost my license in the past so that wouldnt of helped prices

Damn you guys are getting some expensives prices for insurance. My first year of insurance with a VY S Supercharged was $2,400. Then the year after was $1,900. The year after that was $1,600. Then I bought the Monaro which I had to add another $300 on top for the insurance. So this year was $1,900 for the Monaro. Hopefully my next on will go down to atleast $1,500.

Yeah i bought both my utes privately and just rang SGIO insurance up and told them the modifications.. Except the cam of course (on the current one) but i cant see that being a prob.. When i wrote the old ute off, the claim was alot easier than i thought too. It was insured for an agreed 27k but i only bought it for 24k so i had a win there u could say. Had it for 8 months or so before the accident.

When I had the VY, I tried putting it in my parents name and me as a second driver through AAMI (My parents where with them already) and they wouldn't have a bar of it.
The insurance had to go through the youngest driver who would use the car. No matter how much or how little they used it.
I thought this was with all insurance companies now to stop younger people buying expensive/hotted up cars and getting cheaper insurance by putting it in their parents name....

I call BS on on what most people here are quoting.
The fact that most of you are quoting well below realistic premiums for your age suggests you have no idea what you should be paying because you probably don't have insurance.
Premiums for a 20 year old with a clean driving record living in a Melbourne suburb would be somewhere in the vicinity of $3,600. (For an 03 series 1 VY SS insured for $25000, no mods.)
Alternatively, an 08 VE SSV would be around $4,200 for the same driver. Not much difference between ute or sedan.
What some of you have quoted is what you'd be paying if you were driving a late model 4 banger hatch such as an Holden Astra, Mazda 3, Ford Focus etc etc. And if you're flouting the power restriction laws you're en even bigger fool!!
Please note that this isn't aimed at any one person but more with a general over-view of all the repsonses posted thus far.

well i am almost 22 have a vy ss ser 1 ute m6 with full exhaust, lowered, clutch, mags agreed value of 29 000 with just cars and my premium is about 1300 and thats for monthly payments. excess is the standard for just cars about 2000 i think once you add it all up, i am also up to rating one now i think. everyone who says call shannons is talkn rubbish as i did and they went through 20 mins of crap and then said they could not insure me! bloody waste of time.

No offence but most here arent from Melbourne and have done the research to find the CHEAPEST quote possible.
How can you say it should be 3000+ have you rang every insurer in Australia and done phoney quotes for a 20 year old?
I paid $3200 last year for my VX with RAC and a $950 excess.
Being 18 with a VX SS.
Should come done to $2400 with my no claim bonus this year according to my most recent renewal form and I will be 19.
Mine could be cheaper (did a online quote with Just cars and it was around $700 cheaper) but I have my reasons for RAC.
IMO you should expect slightly less than that seeing as your 20 (more road experience) with a similar valued car (mine is agreed value for $22000)
Unless of course you have a bad driving history:1peek:

Michael this post was actually aimed more specifically than I suggested. I won't say any more than that. :)
$3200 is more reasonable imo and yes it does drop dramatically over the first few years provided you stay out of trouble. I was on P plates once. I was paying more at 20 for a late model 4 cylinder than half the guys are claiming for a V8.
I'm still sticking to my original comments, but if someone can prove me wrong, I'll happily eat humble pie.

Fair enough mate. Some might seem really cheap but with insurance companies its just luck of the draw sometimes. Sometimes you can call up and get quoted $3300. Hang up. Give a different operator the same details and end up with $1500.

You are potentially taking a huge risk there as most of the bigger standard insurance companies, I'm guessing SGIO included, won't want to know you if you've opened the motor. That's what places like Just Car Insurance are for. If you have to make a claim and they find out (hear) it's got a cam in it they'll probably say bye bye as you have not fulfilled your duty of disclosure.
im was 18 wen i got my vyII ss insured through just cars and it was only $1700, had a AU v8 falcon ute that cost me 1600 through just cars when i was 17, why is everyones so much higher than mine?
After your car type your location makes a significant difference to the amount you pay for insurance. Out in the middle of nowhere like Alice will be much cheaper than for example Melbourne or Sydney. Just try going to one of the sites that does online quotes and try difference postcodes eg Melbourne 3000 or Sydney 2000 compared to whatever Alice's is - I'm sure you'll find a big difference.

Any others i can look at?
Thanks
Rick.
I don't know how the Aussie insurance works. But sounds very expensive.
I can offer some wisdom:
Insurance companies look at 3 things here.
1. Driving Record, check for accidents and tickets.
2. Number of years experience behind the wheel.
3. Credit history, payment history with credit. Pay bills ontime!
Tip: Be careful, don't show off for the mates. Cops look for this! If you drive down the road and act like every car is a cop car. Less likely to do foolish stuff.
Want to drive fast? We all do, save it for the strip or track. Tough thing to do!!
Time and place for everything, please be wise about it.
The last ticket that I received was in June 1990 for 10mph over the limit. WTF doing 65mph in a 55zone in the middle of nowhere.
My 02 WS6 T/A and my 67 Firebird convertible on a Classic Auto policy with agreed value totaling $80,000us costs $600us/yr. (Cars not used everyday, nor used for general transportation)
Once you have more experience and clear history, try shopping around. Insurance companies will want your business. And offer the best prices to be had. Price around at every policy renewal!!
My 2 cents worth!:soap:
Cheers,
Steve

When I was 21 I started payind $4500 a year or something for my VU SS. It was my first car I had insured. F$$$ing dealers. They told me it was because I was under 25 and that the unrestricted speed limit in the NT pushed it up big time. I was getting shafted big time. That was before I found this place and got some good advice. Can't believe I was so stupid. Live and learn.

Very similar to my cover. Agreed value too. Which is definitelty need with a car you've spent a lot of hard earned on.
Best thing about Shannons is that they do pay by the month at no extra cost. I have both my cars covered with them and my house and contents.

I appreciate the clarification, almost fell outta my chair. Much more reasonable price. Standard car insurance rates here for 3 Vehicles used for transportation, 05 Pontiac Grand Prix V6, 07 Honda CR-V (Wifes car, no balls, her problem, I suggested a Dodge Charger R/T, same price), 78 Chevy p/u 4X2, 02 Hyundai 4-door (Kid's car, but has no desire to get license?? don't ask, her kid) $1980+-/year. It's called full coverage here, $250deductable for Comp(Stolen/fire etc.) and collision. The 67 Firebird and the 02 WS6 T/A are separate policy different company @ $600 agreed value of $80,000 both (Collector car insurance) The street bike is a 97 Honda Magna, basic coverage no collison, just theft/fire etc.(separate policy) $120/ yr. total is $2,700/ year total for 7 vehicles. No tickets/No accidents/ Great Credit report

Yeah, which is what I did. But in the end, I wanted the insurance in my name and I wanted my rating to improve. You are going to have to pay higher insurance fee's sooner or later.
There isn't alot of insurance companys that want to insure an 18-21 y.o with a V8/Turbo car. And they ones that do charge an arm and a leg for it.

Shannons will not be too phased by any mods you have but will be more interested to see if your a motoring enthusiast. The main questions I was asked is What clubs are you a member of ? and How many shows/Events do you attend?
They also don't insure people under 25 but will if they deem you an enthusiast. It all comes down to the phone call or where you get a quote from. My original quote for my VX was while it was entered in a car show.

I'm with Just Car - no one else would touch me when I was 18 with a VX Calais 5.7L. First year (at fault accident in 05) 06 was $1715 and 07 was about $1300 so hopefully i'll see under $1000 this year. Location plays a big part but i'm surprised too as i'm in a bit of a dodgy suburb (Bald Hills) but on the border of Carseldine or Bracken Ridge. Did the quote using those suburbs and they were less.
