I just have a query if disconnecting the exhaust and running it straight out of the extractors will cause any harm to my car, apart from the amount of heat could possibly melt the surrounding area, whats the best way to do this?
And yes it is for off-street purposes
its a vt ss 5.7
cheers

Apart from the fact it won't sound that nice (loud but not necessarily nice), and will likely throw codes immediately from the O2's being unplugged, it should be fine. Just don't drive it or park it on long dry grass or it could be :flame:

anyway to prevent any heat damage....i took it off and could relate it to a supercar type sound even 2 other mates agreed. but worried about the heat so put it back on

Firstly, Supercars do run a muffler, its a Gonzo muffler from memory.

Anyways, there should be 2 strips of heat shielding underneath the car on the floorpan where the cats would normally be.
If you plan on running it out extractors often, i'd be getting a dump tip welded onto a flange so you could angle the exhaust gasses downwards and to the side away from the vehicle body.

Would be a cheap and worthwhile method of doing it IMO.

Yep I wouldnt be running straight out the extractors for to long due to heat. At WOT and back off I reckon the flames would be leaping. I just had to fire up the girl with the zorst off when I changed the cats and DAMN THATS LOUD. I gave it one stab in my driveway and heard someone up the street yell at me to SHUTUP! ha.

Make yourself one of these. Cheap and safe but not straight out of the extractors but straight out after the cats

Thread has sound files and all the details you will need.

I have done it at the track a couple of times. Bloody loud inside the car! The 02s are ok cause they are forward of where you disconnect your exhaust. They do throw a code up though, maybe because the exhaust is exiting so easily and so fast and not that far away from the sensors. Be careful with making a dump pipe, because I believe tracks don't like it if your exhaust is pointing at the bitumen. Out sideways is ok.

I hope you're going to retune it for the lack of backpressure?

Problem No. 1 Your ECU will pull lots of advance if it's running too lean (detonating - KR). If it can't pull enough you could be looking at holed pistons or at least melted valves. Depends on what else is done. Just pulling the pipes without any other changes won't make it faster.

Problem No. 2 most racing facillities in Australia are now under the control of the EPA. They have a strict limit which is dropping this year to I believe 95db at 60 metres (could be 30 metres). Open pipes will never pass this. I'd be surprised if they let you run more than once with that config.

I hope you've got good earplugs, because even inside the car with the windows closed you'll be subjecting yourself to damaging levels of sound. Tinnitus isn't fun. Going 'huh?' all the time doesn't aid conversations or understanding.

I'd be interested in seeing if you actually run any faster. MotoGP the first year they ran 4-strokes had open pipes and the bikes were painfully loud, even 100 metres away. Everyone thought it was great - for six months. Then the teams themselves asked for a limit to be re-introduced. (probably to avoid liability claims from mechanics). Mufflers went on - power didn't go down. Well designed systems don't cost HP.

with bikes they make less power with no muffler, they need some back pressure, id be surprised if it was any different with cars

like someone else has said.....why? just to sound good?

In a bolt-on car chasing times at the track i guess it would present a weight advantage, i know my exhaust is very heavy! it will be interesting to see the mph difference same track same night. Has anyone measured this?
