decided to do an oil change, only problem is i live in roxby downs i have a limited choice of oil, i prefer castrol edge but they only have 5-30w and i think thats bit too thin i wanted the 25-50w.... the best oil i think would be Penzoil GT performance or sumtin its 20-50w has any1 had any experience with this oil, also theres a place that stocks heaps of Mobil oils what type of Mobil oil would i be looking at for near stock ls1.. cheers for any opinions

Look into the penrite SIN range. I was told it was good. Got it in my VE SS-V.

I use Edge 5-30W without any issues. Anything thicker in my SSV seems to go too thick during winter months, not that Brizvagas is all that cold. 'HER' SAAB 93/2t also uses it without any problems.

Holden specify that LS1's and L98's etc use 15W30 mate, I reckon 20W50 is a bit too thick.

I use penrite SIN in my VYSS with no problems, it might just be me but after putting it in the car seems to run a bit quieter at idle

What type of vehicle do you drive?

Holden recommend 5W/30 or 10W/30 for my L98 SSV no particular brand and HSV recommends 5W/30 or 10W30 for my VE R8 as well as recommending Mobil 1. BTW I'm not saying these are best for the new Holdens, just that this is as per the owners manuals.

I will never touch any penrite oil again after i have seen what it does to the inside of the motor

I use castrol edge 25/50 and my motor is the quietest it has ever been
and the 10/60 is meant to be good as well
have a look in the mainlube forum Steve recommends 60 weight
I would will never go back to the thin oil it looks like water when it is drained out and is to thin IMO

Same here. My motor was quiet compared to some on Magnatec, but
even quieter with the Edge. Run Edge in both the SS and Rex now.

When choosing what viscosity to use pay attention to the viscosity @ 100C (not 40C where oil is specéd for it's advertised viscosity)

A SAE 5w30 is around 12 cst@100C (SAE 4) and a SAE 10w60 is around 23 cst@100C (SAE 8) double the film strength thus double the protection.

Because synthetics flow so well at cold temperatures there is no way a SAE 10w60 is too thick however, within 30 seconds from start up your oil is thinning dramatically so its back to a SAE 5w30 within 40 seconds anyway .

So even with a SAE 10w60 you have something not even as thick as sewing machine oil protecting your engine, with 5w30 you have half this.

I still haven't had a logical reason for running thinner engine oils, maybe to pick up 1 kW of power from a little more drag if you were lucky verses half the protection hence double the wear and often a nosier engine. (High tech /spec synthetic like Mainlube 175 Synthetic Race Oil SAE 10w60 often pick up a drag saving through superior base oil and additive quality)

SAE 10w60 can not harm any of our engines with it's grade and your engine is still covered for warranty.

This thread here (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=49835&highlight=100C) has some interesting stuff about wear.

Just thought you would find these facts interesting.

Cheers

Thanks for the very useful info (as usual). Quick question if I may,
are you saying it is ok (even a good idea) to run the a 25w50 oil
in our WRX? Does it really need a synthetic Oil like Subaru recommend?
Or should I stick with the 5w30 changed every 5k for that car?

Synthetics are superior and give good cold flow for start ups and usually have a much higher VI (viscosity index) so not as much thinning at higher temps thus more film strength / less wear.

Good idea for turbos, 25W50 is fine for a REX, it'll just last longer.

Cheer

Thanks Steve, good to hear all this info from someone who knows
what they are talking about

Good info again Steve.

I'm running Castrol Edge 10w60 and it works very well. Can't justify spending that much $$$ on your brand though...sorry.

Cheers,

Macca

First thing to check is the API rating, the higher the better, currently API - SM. Then look at the recommended grade oil, in this case 10W/30. Now select oil that encumbuses this grade eg 10W/50, 5W/60. This will give you better protection at cold starts and protection at higher operating temps. Now check your wallet if you can afford synthetic oils. Synthetics will alway be better as it has better VI (the higher the better), oxidation stability, resistance to shearing etc. Dont be afraid of thin oils as the additive pack in these oil are specific to the application eg some porsches use 0W/30. Manufactures must meet the GF-3 fuel economy standards hence the lower grade oils available.

yeah thats very interseting never know that thanks adventura, im using 10w40 royal purple and have been for last 3 services, but think i might up it to the next stage higher on next service which could be 15w50, unless you say otherwise as i think ahead and winter gets very cold in canberra, and got about 7000kms left in the service, used with pureone filters to note
