Hi guys
Am back to square 1 with my plit engine covers. Bought them late last year and at the beginning of Feb, I left them with someone here from the forum to get it painted but I've been tossed around for about 5-6 weeks with random excuses but final story is I got my covers back exactly as it was before.
So now I've decided that I'll give it a shot myself with the painting. I have a friend who knows a bit or art and has offered to draw up some flames on them for me.
I want to paint the covers white (to match my car colour), with the SS logo painted red (to match the callipers) and get maybe yellow/orange flames on.

Can anyone help me in terms of what paint to get and do I need an undercoat or something. At the moment the covers are black (I think some sort of gel coat). The picture is in that thread below:

Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=87462)

My idea was to go and get a few paint spray cans and do it...but am not sure if that is a very good idea.

Any help welcome.

my uncle is a panel beater and he sprayed my fibreglass covers and strut brace the same time/paint as my hardcover and no problems at all they were simply just rubbed back to get the shine off and wiped down with prepsol same for strut brace its genuine GM and just got the shine off thre black paint then it was all base coated then the real hot housee was applied with hardner and plenty of clear coat, been about 1 months no problems, peels, blisters, bubbles or anything and the strut brace being metal gets to hot to even touch for 2 seconds

Did my ecotec engine cover with a normal spray can. Haven't had trouble.

Must admit I haven't tried it myself yet (must do the L76 covers I have for mine one day.....) but my understanding was similar to Big_Valven i.e. they don't get all that hot so normal paint should be OK. That said, if I was doing something fancy that I didn't want to have to do again if it got hot I'd use a heatproof paint.

yeah wonky go for it, i also forgot i sprayerd my rocker covers which would get real hot....i was board being cast alloy i just cleaned them good and gave a coat of etch primer then a chrome/silver spray and then come clear and no problems with that also, same for red sprayed throttle body, im a painter not that it means anything as its common sense for any primers needed and a good clean just with thinners to take any mess off

When painting plastic, it first needs to be etched primed and the paint needs a plasticizer added to it, to make it flexible. Otherwise it will crack and peel off with time.

I've actually tried it on the car during the weekend. Just a few queries though..some bits of it actually touch the engine parts. After I bolt it down, I can still shake it a bit. So, Do i need to put washers or do I have to put that rubber thing which looks like a wine cork which comes attached to the original cover??

yeah use the strange spacers that are cliped into the orig cover i needed them for my fibreglass covers and sits better, but still rubs on ther oil cap......cheap crap, but good qualitly at the same time just smoothies and i colour coded them and put satin ss badges on them
