Every combination you try leaves a multiple of 9... look at the symbols 9,18,27,etc they are always the same.

Then you stuffed up your sums ...

There are only 9 possible answers, doesn't matter what 2 digit number you start with, they are;

9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81 (all multiples of 9 ...)

Every one of the above numbers will have the same symbol, so if you don't stuff up your sums you have to get that symbol.

I assume it rotates the symbols so that if you try more than once you won't get the same symbol again.
