hey could anyone tell me how much weight a tailgate can safely hold (folded down). the reason i ask is because i just bought a bike ( yamaha yz250) and i want to be able to take it out in my ute but in order to load it up onto the back the loading ramp will have to rest on the tailgate so it will have to cope with the full weight of the bike,180kg ish. my tailgate has the 2 black cables either side

i dont know the exact capacity but i would have thought that would be fine. Remember you wont have the full weight of the bike pushing down only on the tailgate as half of it would be taken by the ramp, so say 100KG exactly on the tailgate. My dad would weigh around that i would think and he stands on his all the time wen he loads engines and shit in. my 2c.

the bike would only weigh 100kg max mate.
no worries at all hey, there made for this, ive loaded my honda in mine a hundred times with no dramas, even with other people standing on the tailgate so dont even worry about it.

yer the tailgate will handle it no worries with the ramp on the back of it. i do it that way all the time with my crf450. although i wouldn't go jumping up and down on it

The VE Ute tailgate actually has indentations on it specifically for bike ramps. Should imagine other tailgates would be the same, just without the indentations.

yeh my bad i jus looked at the specifications and it only weighs 115kgs .........cheers for all the responses. i can't wait to get it on my ute now.
oh and more thing.. did you 's get some anchor points welded in the the tray to strap the bike down to or did you just use those thin standard brackets that are on the inside of each side in the ute. i just thought they looked a little thin to take the tension of the straps

The standard ones are piss weak.
What i used to do with my klx650 (140kg) was put it in so the front wheel was right up in the drivers side corner and have the rear wheel on the passenger side rear with the bike on the kickstand. that way i could put the tailgate back up.
Strapped it into those pissy little bars, but made sure i didnt go overboard tightening.
Did a few trips to perth from the pilbara no worries and if it didnt move at 180kph it wasnt going anywhere.

KXF250 here and load it onto my VZ ute. Its fine all sweet. But why is the wheel resting on the ramp? You can get them in sideways no worries.

sweet that seem s like the way to do it.. i didn't think i'd fit it in my ute even having it from corner to corner and get the tailgate up because i've seen other utes with the tailgate half down and ockey straps holding it closed

i put mine in straight and use the two front tie points and tie the tailgate to the rear of the bike. it's nearly closed although it is a lot shorter with motard wheels on it

mx bikes have shorter steering angles, so if i can fit in a big bike like a klx. You will easily fit a yz,cr,kx etc.
