View Full Version : A6 - second gear "missing"

Hi guys / girls,

I've had my Calais V 6.0 for about 10 weeks now (6000 kms) and am quite happy with it except for a couple of minor issues. One of the minor things that annoys me is the apparent reluctance of the auto box to use 2nd gear when going around relatively low speed corners or when you slow down but accelerate again before actually stopping. When driving around "normally", whether in "D" or "SS" mode, the gearbox seems to either drop down to 3rd gear only or all the way down to 1st. If it drops to 3rd it's OK, maybe a little sluggish when you take off again, but will kick down to 2nd if you put your foot down a bit. But when it drops to 1st it always feels very jerky and to me totally unneccesary. I don't reckon the gearbox should ever drop down to 1st gear unless the car comes to a complete stop (or you totally mash the go pedal to the floor). Does anyone else experience this with their A6 boxes, and is there a fix for it, or is this a problem related to my car only?

Cheers.

Software to tweak the A6 is now available, so that may be an option for you.

One thing I absolutely agree with is that I don't reckon the gearbox should ever drop down to 1st gear unless the car comes to a complete stop (or you totally mash the go pedal to the floor).

This is especially the case with the ratio of first gear in the VE A6. The inherant down shift into first gear on slowing for traffic lights and such like is a learching, reving and unnecessary pain IMHO. You certainly wouldn't downshift change into first if it was a manual - so why do it in an auto. Sure once completely stopped, pick up first in readiness to move forward.

Software to tweak the A6 is now available, so that may be an option for you.
Only potential problem with that is that I have heard the A6 now has something that records if the settings are changed from factory, so if you have subsequent problems with it any warranty claims could be refused.

I don't know whether it is possible to somehow clear that memory with a Tech 2 (if you have a friendly dealer) or other software.......
