View Full Version : Failed flex plate at nats
Thought you guys may find this interesting. This is the flex plate off Tim's ute that broke at the nats. This is not the factory unit, it was replaced at some point with this aftermarket one.

Ouch!!
Looks like time for a Flexplate with more metal in it. Something like this:

Don't think those big gaps are doing any good.
Cheers,
Steve
We've actually put a factory plate back in it, we've run many 9sec passes on them and haven't had one fail.

What were symptoms when the flexplate failed?
What were symptoms when the flexplate failed?
Well obviously it had no drive, but there was also no load on the engine. It just free revved.

Funny how the factory parts are actually better. I've had conversations with folks swearing on aftermarket parts stating superiority, obviously not. Swiss chesse in a flex plate is never a good thing.
My Dad worked for GM for 34 years in components testing in Metro Detroit. I've seen the stuff they test, was always facinating. They would really beat-up parts, more that the consumer ever would under normal conditions.
Cheers,
Steve

Strangely enough what I initially thought was a srarter motor has turned out to be an almost identical thing to this - a stuffed flex plate.
Funny that 2 black utes running similar times would do the same thing on the same day - I have a sneaking suspicion I may have the same type of plate as well.:errr:

Ive seen the same thing with a aps ute at the last ls1 nationals ..
The drive plate ended up in about 5 bits as it shifted from 2nd to 3rd .
It looks like a h/d Magnum drive plate to me ..
I seem to think there a bit stiff and crack instead of flexing in big load situations ..

looks like a zinc plated late OEM piece to me..............stamp steel crap.
we only use the .250" CrMo drive plates in our high power applications. Change the converter to 7/16" UNF drive bolts and your cranking.
