View Full Version : Adventra or Captiva - which to buy?

Hi everyone -
New here.. but found the site here on a Google search - looks good with all the experience and info. Have been hitting the regular haunts for the last month for past and comparison reviews on the Adventra and Captiva in making a choice between the two.... very confusing!!!
Need a vehicle that is higher than my current Berlina for access (had an accident and have a knee problem that is not going to go away).
If I am going to change my ever reliable VT11 Berlina (which is on duel fuel) I need a wagon for the furkids - love the split tailgate on both models which I can get a security grill access door made up for the inside - so if dogs are left in the car for some reason I can leave the upper part up for good air ventilation.
Also, cart a Hobie mirage kayak which although only 32kg is quite a different hull shape to a regular kayak/canoe so have to get cross bars adapted with futher bars lengthwize again to cradle kayak. (Need fitted or installed tie downs front ... use tow ball at rear) AWD would be great for slippery conditions
My concern is economy. Thought of the diesel in the Captiva but have been advised against it as been told by engine reconditioner that small diesels are going to have all sorts of issues as they are seeing a lot come through under warranty re compression issues (bit to techy for me) bottom line was dont buy! So it would be the V6 petrol version. Or the Adventra - bit more weight but have the room to put a donut tank in the spare wheel well and put LPG on with the Sequential Vapour Injection and fit spare on the side in the Cargo area ... still enough room for the critters.
Height /access wize - I believe they are the same as we have measured from ground to seat top.
Also concerned about the reports of the sagging in the CX as compared to the self levelling in the LX V8
Those that have experience with both - would really appreciate your imput re petrol usage in the Captiva and Adventra and if you have successfully put the Adventra on LPG what sort of economy do you get. - and further if an LX8 is that much more to run than the CX/SX.
Know its a broad ask but all imput appreciated :)
Cheers,
Leila

If you're looking to buy new then the Adventra is no longer produced, in which case the Captiva is the only option.
If second hand then both the Adventra and Captiva petrol are quite heavy on fuel, around the 15-18L/100kms depending on how you drive. I can't help with comments the option of LPG on the Adventra. The Captiva diesel will get around the 11-12L/100kms around town and 7-8L/100kms on the open road. There is a slight lag of a second or two until the turbo kicks in but it goes very well. I haven't heard of any real problems with the Captiva diesel but they haven't been around for long enough to have any yet. Diesels are the future for a lot of cars and more and more are being sold, so that may be why the engine reconditioner is seeing more of them. Diesel's traditionally are stronger and longer lasting when compared to petrol's.

Thanks Mac for your imput... was looking at 2nd hand either vehicle.
I guess I am leaning toward the Adventra if there is not much difference in the petrol usage - as the Adventra offers more room and the option to put in a donut gas tank - and other half reckons the Adventra looks like its a wagon on steroids ... he likes!!!

My 2c worth < I just personally like the look of the Adventura over the Captiva and if the fuel usage is close then I would go for one of them
But at the end of the day it is you and your huby's choice , let us know what you went with and post up some pics when you can:)
Good name you have there too:bow:

I currently own a Holden Adventra LX6. I have also owened the Captiva. My preference in every box goes to the Adventra. Why? The Holden Adventra is the most mis-represented car in Australia. Holden was late to bring out the 6 cylinder version of this great car. They persisted with the V8 version and let the Ford Territory dominate the market in the 6 cylinder segment. A big big mistake for the marketing team at Holden. In desperation they go to Korea to import the Captiva. It is not a bad car but not a patch on the Adventra. Why? The Adventra is a very versitile beast. To the comment of 15-18 L/100Ks, my Adventra LX6 averages 12.9 around the city of Sydney and 9.8 in the country. It has leather seats, dual climate air con, power front seats, 10 speaker stereo, electric sunroof, self leveling suspension, 6 airbags, fog lights etc etc. There is nothing that this car lacks. And with it's 5 speed semi-auto transmission, it is very easy to drive. But it is the versatilty of this vehicle that is its hallmark. A cavernous boot can accommodate anything you throw at it making it a most practical vehicle. It does have some disadvantages, but in terms of the better vehicle - Captiva or Adventra - it is the latter hands down.

Yeah I agree the Adventurer was very mis represented but then again when you have to compete with the proven Territory what do you expect. Personally I'd only have one in a 8. If it had to be a 6. The territory is awesome.

Both the Adventra 6cyl and V8 could go on LPG SGI. You will be roughly $2,000 out of pocket after the governments rebate. At auction with around 40-60,000 km they can be picked up for around 22-$24, some with factory warranty.
They are bit of an orphan; not many people interested and Holden has ceased production. This makes them great buying second. You can’t beat a Commodore / Adventra wagon for space, most large 4WD have less space.
I would expect the V8 to use 2 litres per 100 km more around town. The V8 was known as being thirsty. I have driven the V8 and it feels as powerful as my V6 6cyl wagon.
I have taken Adventra on the Werribee 4WD facility. It crossed creeks, climbed steep dirt hills and did many things most 4WD do. I even punted it down a dirt road at 100km and it stuck to the road, I wouldn’t try that in my 2WD wagon.
In March, I traded my VT2 Berlina Wagon (250000K's) to a 2006 CX6 (11400K's- Ex GMH Factory Drive Car) The reason "CARGO ROOM" !
I always liked my VT for it's handling & space. Looked at Captiva, Territory & Klugger - Don't come close. Captiva is very narrow. I'm over 6 Ft & love driving in the country - getting in & out & rough country roads, a higher vehcle was wanted. But I treat it like a sports car.
Was doing the rounds today of preformance shops, as I don't want to go LPG due to spare ending up in the back, to see what could be done on fuel.
I have gone back to running 98ish Octane, which gives me 11's on the Hyway & 16-17's around town. Advice so far $1600 should get me into high 9's & 14's.
Great car, and do love it for country trips. I will for an 600 drive in the country return just for lunch. Missing my range that I had with the VT, & the ALLOYTECH's are a high rev engine to boot.
I ran my vt with air shocks in the back, which lasted 200 000k's. Just went to the servo when required to carry load and pumped up.
You should find a place to slided a Tow Bar in under neath a pannel at the back. Already wired, just need adaptor.
Just remembet that un like the room around the wheel arch's the Berlina has, the Adventra has compartments - Floor to Window & Seat to Tailgate - which can cause a headach for spare tyre once LPG is Fitted.
Also Adventra comes with Rails on the Cargo Floor to tye things down. I used them to tie the dogs lead down last week with the tail gate opened.
Apart from the fuel, I would not swap it for anything

CX6, your experience is the same as mine with my SX6. Just interested, for $1600, what were the mods that were specced to reduce fuel usage? Your usage is very similar to mine.
THanks,
Si
SI - Cost were for
4 wheel dyno
New Air Filter
Quality Spark Plugs
ECU Adjustments
The guy that I spoke to has a normal VZ Wagon that he tries things on. with a heavy load in the back he claims mid 8's on th HyWay. Towing a Race car he claims, untill it hits the hills, 10's.
Hope it helps

Neither of these are really a 4WD if thats what your looking for. Personally i would go for the Captiva diesel. As far as the diesel place saying small diesels are going to have problems..... they have been driving them in Europe for decades.... and your early Jakaroo's etc were 2.- litre diesels anyway!
The Adventra is just a really heavy wagon with drive to all wheels, from a repair and warranty point of view - Captiva hands down!

Personally, I would not thouch a Korean built Daewoo Craptiva with a barge pole.
The Australian built Holden gets my vote.
That is my 2c worth of my personal opinion.
Flame suit on...:lmao::lmao:

Considering the Captiva was designed here, many of the components come from here, and the diesel is not actually built it Korea..... its not much of an arguement.
Its still a holden, just as much as the Rodeo, Barina, Astra, Vectra... shal i go on! plus i can give you a shopping list of parts in the Adventra that aren't techlically Australian.
and .... it depends on what your looking for - the Adventra is not really designed for off road - the Captiva ( in principal ) is.

I know this is a Holden forum but sadly I would by the Territory, and in fact I did. In terms of practicality, style and refinement I think it is the best by a mile. I looked at the same options as you, plus several more as well and still settled on the Ford despite my bias. After a year and 20,000 and have never regretted the decision.

No Argument mate, personal opinion only, as I stated,
I personally would not touch a Daewoo Craptiva with a barge pole.

To all those who cringe at the fuel economy of the adventra v8 all I can say is spend the money on a good tune and exhaust system. I'm on my second
LX8. 10/100 hwy and around 12-13 city driving and have over 300kw. Have your tuner activate the lean burn option which is excellent for fuel economy on the hwy. Those figures are never empty either, hwy driving is always loaded. Hauling a trailer up to 2 tonne is also comparible, VCM suite or LS1 edit is money well spent.

Ok sorry for the thread mine but I have done a reasonable search on this forum and I have found a wealth of info so far, but I have found some of it more relevant when the cars were newer (price economy etc) so I am looking for real world experiences now. I am seriously looking at an LX6 at the moment so I am now looking for some opinion's from people that haved lived with them over the last 4-6 years or so. What goes wrong with them? How is the fuel economy after lots of different driving experiences? Can they be tuned for extra economy?
My Mrs will be driving it mainly and she would not do much more that 100-150 ks a week anyway. I need it to punt a boat around on some weekends (no more that a k or two at a time) and would like to take it From Adelaide to Hotham once or twice a year. Seeming they were unpopular and expensive when they were new so how have these cars faired over the years. I do not want to consider a V8 version at this stage.
Cheers Mikey.

Holden Adventra ,Real world ?? highly underrated and affordable vehicle , BUT only in V8 guise, Mafless tuned with OTRCAI and a consistent 11.8L per 100Ks over 4 weeks and total 2,891Ks travelled with 5 adults and luggage on board wins evey day, average speed 12KPH over limit , and the Clincher !! one cross country trip too Rainbow beach from Noosa return thrown into that same equation ( speed and L Per 100 ). all Leather up market trim wins hands down over that thirsty 3.6 L base model all day every day imo. and I've owned one 6 addy, for a whole week...one of only a limited number of cars I've lost a bundle on,:eek
As another BIG 4x4 Holden owner desribes it.....*An all round package which is just a pleasure to drive hard or just cruise. Dont worry about fuel its all a load of crap. Any soft roader or v6 is going to do worse*....
I Concurr...Retail, the V6 version is rightly classed as the *lemon* , unwanted / Unloved

I have owned my CX8 for 3 months now. Avg fuel is 16l/100.
Compared to my previous V8 Land Rover its faster and uses about 10l/100km less around town and about 6l/100km on the highway.
My other car was a VXII V6 wagon and the addy is a lot faster than that and more comfy.

I am looking to trade my LX8 in on a SSV. Kids have grown up and leaving home so dont need the wagon bit and feel a sedan would be more appropriate. I live in WA so that maybe an hurdle????
Great car, been tuned by Chipmaster for economy. 85,000 ks and FSH + oil every 5k. Cant tell you what it like off road as i didnt take it off road. Sort of defeats the purpose of having AWD but it was the closest thing to A Calais wagon available at the time.
If interested just PM me, if not no probs i will use it to trade up with
Cheers

Cheers Mikey.
If ya getting an Adventra , get the very last of the LX8's , the true VZ's .
as they threw in all the options as standard and the motor pumped out 250KW's .
Spend some money on a tune and air intake , OTR or Bigger air box and you'll have sub 10's per 100km .
You won't look back .
