Hey guys and gals,
I'm looking at trading in my '04 Holden Commodore SV6 VZ for ever a VE SV6 or a VE SS, I am just wondering which you guys would recommend ie fuel consumption figures, also what is the best price you have gotten for either of these models.
Cheers..

Lowest consumption I have gotten in my Sv6 is 6.6L/100km, this was during highway driving.
My usuall consumption in resedential start-stop (not above 60 the way to work) is about 11L/100km
With a large load it goes up to just shy of 13
for me, and my needs my Sv6 is fine, I had the possibility of getting a SSV but the wait time, in combination with my extra $1500 on insurance, and mileage (do a lot of driving for work, and get the same fuel expense for any car over 2.5L) I chose the 6, which has been a great car.

not bad fuel econ for a six, with fuel prices going up all the time maybe you should stick with a six.
but them extra 2 cylinders up front is a better feeling, my R8 on a recent trip to adelaide got 10.2 hwy use with 14.6 in town, I dont mind paying the difference in fuel for more grunt

if you drive them right there good on fuel.. If you sorta want a ss i think you will be dissapointed if you get a sv6 at the end of the day

had an sv6 for a rental in perth average consumption was showing at 15.1... guess it has been thrashed, took it very easy and it dind't seem to drop down much, the engine note sounds like a Falcon taxi at low revs, only when you rev it that it sounds halfway decent, I'd go an SS for the extra money....

I would go VE. Take both for a run and see what feels better to drive then go home and see what the differnet is for insurance then pick.

question was sv6 or ss
SS
MyVE V8 gets 14 around town and 10 or less on the highway. Had the VE V6 (195) for a while and got 9 on the highway and 12 around town. It equates to just a couple more dollars for fuel but a WHOLE lot better engine....
*figures are litres per 100km.

I Would Buy The Ss , I Have The Ssv And Depends On How You Drive Any Car , It Is An Awesome Car .
** Plus Also About The Insurance , A Little Tip I Sold My Prado And Bought The Ssv And Insured My Ssv Through Toyota Themselves For The Purchase Price Of $60,000 Approx , Holden Wanted $1800, I Asked Toyota And It Costs Me $ 770 For The Year, Give Them A Call Its Worth It.

Thanks for info, can you guys tell on average how km's per tank of fuel do you get in city traffic, and also who do have your car insured with...

If you're leaning towards the SV6, I suggest not taking an SS for a test drive!! You'll end up buying an SS instead :)

I agree, test drove the ss and sv6 on the same day due to certain constraints went for the sv6 only to regret my choice at least 3 times a week.

i cant believe this is even a serious thread..
SS anyday.
It depends completely on what you need it for mate, if you don't like large fuel and rego bills then go the SV6, if you want a real car :hide: go the SS for performance.
I can easily get 500+ km a tank in city only driving. Around 700 - 900 km on the highway.
73 litre tank with only 98RON fuel...

I don't have either car, but I agree, don't test drive the cars back to back, decide on what you want before driving them, I foolishly drove the SS first, then the SV6 and it just felt wrong (I did feel the SV6 the better handler, but it also was brand new demo, the SS was a couple months old and was obviously the dealer hack). My cousin went from a Vz SS to an Ve SV6 and has no complaints other than he does miss the 8 from time to time.
There's a very low km SSV up here thats under $40K, if it doesn't have to be brand new:
http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/HOLDEN/COMMODORE/Queensland/csn5128442.aspx
If ever you do any towing, the V8 should be the easy winner!
Sure a V6 can pull a trailer but a V8 will use less fuel than a V6 when towing.

Yeah mate i think if you had originally drove a V8 and then went to a new six you might regret it especially if you could afford the V8. Though as you currently drive a V6 i think the VE would be a worthy upgrade.
Although i cannot help think that if you ask about the ss that maybe you can afford it...and in that case its a no brainer GO THE SS

Wow! Best I achieved in a VZ SV6 sedan was 7.8l/100km on 91RON Melb-Canb door to door. I also did Syd-Melb on a single tank, showing 8.0l/100km... My current car is a tad thirstier...

I would just like to know how the hell people get under 15L per 100K's for their V8 commodores around town!
My VY SS never gets under 16L per 100K's and that is with VERY determined efforts at economical driving.
It usually sits around the 18 - 19L per 100K's or more if I am giving it a bit more often than usual.
The only time it gets below these sort of figures is if I go on the motor way where it will return 9 -10L per 100K's which is awesome but as I live right in Brisbane and do all my driving in city traffic these motorway milage figures are very rare.
I think some people must live in towns where they have motorways everywhere and no traffic lights. ROTFLOL.
PS only having a general dig here not a go at anyone in particular.
Any way my 2c would have to be SS ALL THE WAY!
Unless you are a young fella that will be paying way toomuch in insurance and you live in a city where you wont be doing any motorway driving in which case the SV6 may well be a better option for you.

If you are marginally worried about fuel consumption, DONT buy the V8 ...... I get around 14 L per 100 round town and in the 9's on the open road. Combination city / freeway is always arounf 13.5 ltrs per 100.
If you buy a V8 they use petrol, plain and simple ....... Modern V8's use less than previous models and the cars are heavier and put out more kw.
If you want a V8, buy the V8, if you want a V6, buy that, take the fuel out of the equation.
Happy choices!

When I first got it, my VE Clubby in stock configuration gave me around 12.5 - 13 litres per 100km around town.
Since my dual 3 inch cat back zorst and OTRCAI I get around 14 - 14.5 litres per 100km. So I think the AFR is a bit on the rich side. I dó drive it pretty hard too though. Absolute worst Ive seen since havíng the car is 16's around town.
Once I get it tuned I'm expecting it to avg around 14 litres per 100km around town.
To answer your question though, I don't know how I get the figures I do... I just do  Although I only ever use 98RON fuel.

My VY Calais gets around 13-13.5L day to day driving from Penrith to Seven Hills and back. Not too bad really considering my old VS V6 used to do somewhat similar figures. Gunna look at a tune within the next couple of months to hopefully improve that figure and see some more horses :D

They are some really good figures your getting mate. Its awesome to see a V8 with the performance available getting consumption figures that are that good.
I only ever use BP ultimate too but I think the 222 - 224 cam and my heavy right hoof combined with the fact that I live right in Brissy with its REALLY bad traffic all add up to totally ruining my chances of getting any decent consumption figures out of my car.
That said I dont pay for the fuel so the care factor of 0 also means that any attention I pay to consumption is purely co-incidental any way LOL!
Cheers

"Around Town" or "Peak traffic". Around town at about 10PM at night i average between 12-15 depending on how heavy my right foot is. Peak hour traffic is woeful - 18-22... But that would be expected when your average speed is 10-20km/h.
And this thread does suck!

My current fuel consumption is 13.2l/100kms with an average of 42km/h. My car is a 6AT, and i drive it sedately, i.e the car hardly ever goes over 2000rpm before it changes gears.....
I have got as low as 10.1l/100kms., but that was on the Federal Hwy sitting on 117km/h for approx 2 hours...

CSP's fuel consumption would good as he's in Canberra. One could say, a lot less traffic and better infrastructure than most major cities. That is, if CSP doesn't sit in the Canberra's peak hour in the city.

Canberra peak hour....... we could hardly call it that... ur right, our traffic here is awesome compared to other states, we are quite lucky in Canberra.... Although we do have a shit load of roundabouts, which makes for alot of breaking/accelerating.....

I am currently negotiating with my company that instead of a pay rise, they pay for my fuel.
They can make it an expense for them that is work related so can get tax credits for it. And it's not a fringe benefit for me because I pay for it and get re-embursed :D

Depending on what you can afford. Buy the SS as the Good car, and keep a dependable used cheap car around for the daily commute. This will help keep the km's down on the good one. The cheap car could be something very good on the gas. You may also qualify for a multiple car discount on insurance rates, and list the SS for pleasure use only.
Been doing that for years mate, the good car stays clean in the garage under cover til the weekend.
Cheers,

Your not going to get any V6 fans on a LS1/V8 site mate so SS gets the nod! Also lots better features inside ie integrated bluetooth standard etc very handy.

In terms of ute the SV6 misses out on a few items that the SS gets. No Bluetooth, only single disc cd, not mp3 compatible etc. Perhaps sedan is different I only compared the utes as that was what I was buying.

CSP is right - SV6 and SS are literally the same except for the extra donk and 6 stacker in the SS.
Both have BT and AUX port.
In reference to the SV6 Ute - 60th Anniversary ute will now have BT and leathers. Check today's read in carpoint for futher info.

Ok roger that,
So the sedan and ute SV6 spec is different thats interesting. You cant compare a special edition as its only a limited edition. Normally the SV6 ute wont have Bluetooth, MP3 capability or 6 disc but the sedan will basically?

I bought my SS early. Bloke i worked with had SV6. I drive reasonably hard, I dont care too much about fuel prices. Other fella was a lot more sedate in his driving. Similar driving conbditions. I was usually 1 l/100k better than him at worse case.

So what is your current car.
BF F6.
IMHO. If you want a 6 buy a XR6/6T, if you want an 8 buy an SS.
I wouldn't wish the BF XR6 I had on anyone. 6A too. Fortunately a company car. Remedied by the one above.
I made stupid decisions for my last 2 cars by chickening out and getting the V6 instead of the V8 because of fuel worries.
Once I finally grew some berries I bought the VE SSV and to be honest am not really phased about fuel because it is about 1 litre per hundred more than my VT V6 which required a flogging to get anywhere.
Its all about perspective. yeah its going to cost an extra couple of bucks for fuel, but I bet you most people don't have a problem paying $3.80 for a 600ml Coke at a servo when we all know 2L at a supermarket is cheaper.
