i think its actually a 5.7, reason being that (if memory serves) any engine number begining with VFxxxxxxxxx is a 5.7.
any engine number beginning with 6MBxxxxxxxx is 6.0.
i stand corrected.

Cable TB means its earlier than VZ but it has later model coil packs and LS6 heads.
VYII Used 2 wires for the TB (throttle + cruise control)
PCV system is VYII/VZ
Mobile 1 oil cap was a HSV item.
The TB is a 3 bolt style but uses an adapter plate onto a 4 bolt LS2 manifold
Radiator is VX Style
Power steering bottle is new.
Id say its a LS2 5.7 from a VZ retro fitted into a VT/VX.
Its definitely not a L76 with those heads.

looks like a LS2 to me. Definitely LS2 heads and intake.
engine number boss is recessed on LS1.
If it has a cam sensor up the front it is LS2.

hey guys by the looks of it it was built in 2006 (by engine number) so id say its a 6 lt? i could be wrong?
yes it has a cam sensor pretty sure.
now how to tell the diff between 6l and 5.7
i will be on the phone tomo to the workshop what should i say? cause i paid for an l76 to be fitted and obviously was not.
pic cam sensor?

more than likely LS2, although the engine number has got me,
TommyVTss

so 2006 build 54th day it would have to be ls2 6l i think ,
is there anyway to tell?
thanks alot tom

VZ L76 6.0 engine numbers start with 6MB......
LATE VZ L98 manual engine numbers start with CAK....
LATE VZ L98 auto engine numbers start with 7NB......
maybe the engine has come with no number on the block so he has stamped the old number from your ls1???
possible?
but looks like a ls2 to me. l76 had the same heads as the l98 and the number off the head is diffent to the ones on my l98

Stock LS1 should have casting number 241 on front drivers side head.
Stock LS2 should have casting number 243 on front drivers side head.
Stock L98 or L76 should have casting number 5364 (maybe also 2716) on front drivers side head.
afraid to say you have a 2006 build LS2...
if you paid for the l76 ill be going back and see the fitter...

cant be mate because i had a 5 litre.
could be another stamp of a destroyed motor.... think i will get holden to check the number then take it to a mechanic to double check it...

ouch.
if it is an ls2 and you don't plan on any mods then i would be happy, however if you specifically wanted the L76 then what the! go to town once you know exactly what it is..
I am sure this will be a closely followed topic, best of luck and let us know how you go

Once you have clarified what motor youve got, let us know the shop and reasons? Id be interested to hear.

OK,
L76 heads as follows....
a_L76-1 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/swingtan/2440744662/)
L76 Intake....
a_L76-2 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/swingtan/2440744792/)
So looking at these 2 items alone, I'd say you have an LS2, not an L76.
Simon.

sure will,
aslong as its a 6l ls2 i will be happy enough still dissapointed car still made 266rwkw on the dyno with otrcai and exhaust unless its a bodge dyno sheet i would say its still a 6l.
it still bloody hammers anyway.
i will be asking for money for a cam i think as a compensate.
might rip a head of tomo to see if they are 4'' bores wich would be a 6l

mate much easyer way than rip the head off
but im 99.99% its a ls2 buy the engine number and the 243 heads.
there will be 6.0 stamped on the block...

Interesting thread. The shop may have ripped you and kept the L76 or they may not fully understand the difference. Does this mean you have a 76mm throttle body or a 90mm throttle body?

76mm im pretty sure they took the 90 mm of for ease of instilation although i know you can get an adaptor for for it to work on the ls1 computer.
im sure they would know the diff.

there is no doubt it is a LS2. 6.0 will be cast on the front of the block. No need to pull heads.
There was NEVER a 5.7L with front cam sensor.
Why didn't they fit a cable 90mm? There are plenty available.

well i couldnt help myself i went outside and investigated it found the 6.0 on the drivers side could only see it with a pic from my mobile.
so we have identified it as an 2006 LS2 6l
going to call them tomo what do ya think i should do say?

At least its still a VZ 6lt crate motor.
You were after a L76 though and thats what you asked about because it has the better heads. I would try seek some goodies such as a 90mm throttle body, cam, U/D Pulley, springs, pushrods, OTR or even have your heads ported so they flow as decent as the L76s.
Just something to compensate because as most are aware that because the L76 has the better heads it achieves the better results when cammed etc.
Or even a discount on the install.

hey michael
already have an otrcai
think i may try for the cash option and do a cam and pay to get the heads ported myself
or perhaps a ripshit although i havent been finding the box that bad but it could be better
cheers mate

If you don't mind me asking, what did they charge for the conversion? There is nothing wrong with the LS2 engine, in fact they are fantastic. However an LS2 conversion would cost a lot less than an L76 conversion if the LS2 already had a 24x reluctor wheel. Do you know if they had to strip your engine to change the reluctor wheel?
