Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting a Crewman, preferably an SS. Can anyone offer any advice or can owners suggest that they are a good thing?
Cheers

Love my 6L SS crewman, Back seat is limiting but suits us at the moment as both our kids are not yet in the teens. Diff didn't whine until i changed the ratios up to 3.73. I don't know what you are going to use it for, If for towing go the auto as it has a better capacity. Try to get the later of the 6L L98motor. Like I said I Love it.

I need a ute for work. Not always as I'm not a tradesman but I do need to carry parts occasionally and I will sign it up to promote my products. I'm driving a VU II Maloo at the moment and I have a 13 and 15 year old. My wife has a Mazda 3 and there are times when I need to be the kids' taxi so I'm sort of stuck. I can't fit my stuff into a sedan and I need more grunt than a Rodeo, Hilux or Triton can give me. That's why I think the SS Crewman is the go so long as it will fit a couple of teenage kids.

Hey mate, Ive got a cross 8 and love it. But I think it drinks more than me.
Heavy on fuel, but does it all with style.
Teenagers will totally hate you if you put them in the back.
I have a 10 yr old and he bitches.
My vote is the crewmans are the best All rounder so far.:)

Yeah ... I've heard ridiculous fuel numbers out of the Avalanche, almost unbelievable and I really don't need 4WD or AWD. My teenagers are girls so I'm used to the whining and moaning anyway .. :jester: . I don't plan on taking the kids on long trips with the Crewman, just short dashes to sport and school etc etc. I think I'll be going to a dealer to check them out this week.
Thanks for info so far fellas.

After the new mods, Cam and heads, I am averageing about 15/100.
Yep shes a thirsty one, but I also picked up about 100hp!
The ss will return much lower figures.
It seems the cross 8 is about 4/100 worse. lucky me.:bawl:
They are a good ride.

Mate, I've got a VZ 6 ltr SS Thunder Crewie, so it came with the hard cover lid, leather seats etc as standard. I Got a Rhino spray on lining in the tub and it works great. Mine has done 37k's in two years without any diff probs. Had squeaky rear springs that were an alignment issue but was fixed at the first inspection. A pillow for the kids on the lower back area works well to make life more comfortable, it changes the angle. The wife doesn't like the limited view out the back window (ok for taller people). Economy depending on how much the loud pedal gets pressed 12.5 to 13 l/100km running to and from work to home (mixture of 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 km zones). Front end handles like a sedan, but rear end old style. Definitely no comparision to a Commodore ute in the handling department, but then again absolutely excellent against any other crewcab vehicle.

We have enhanced a few crewman cross 8s, crewman SS and adventras. They can be improved quite a bit in economy and torque down low with a mafless tune. We also have a special cam package nicely suited to these cars that drastically increases low down torque.
The other option is to fit a turbo system or a blower like a PWR or Harrop.

i love my ss crewy. my 9 year old has never complained about the back seat and we have travelled 200+kays without stopping.
i recently put lowered rear springs in and it made the quality of the ride has decreased, so i wouldnt recommend lowering it especially if you will be loaded or towing most of the time.

Thanks for the info fellas. I rang a few dealers and was essentially told that the VZ SS 6ltr in manual was pretty hard to come by but there are a few VY 5.7s around. I hope to look at one with low kms tomorrow. Saw prices online ranging from $26,000 to $40,000. They are out there, it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I'm limiting my colour choice to black or gun metal so that knocks a few more options out too.
