Hi,

Looking at quietening my exhaust down on my VZ Clubsport a little as no doubt one day i'll be pulled over for it. I'm looking for some opinions on how i want to do this. Still wanting to keep the Difilippo 4into1s, metal cats and twin 3" X-Force system, i was thinking of replacing the rear muffler with an X-Force Varex muffler.

For those who don't know what these are:
http://xforce.com.au.tmp.anchor.net.au/cars/view_car/29

They have now released an oval muffler with twin 3" tips which is the one i'm looking at. But the only downside is that the inlet is a single 3". Would there be any problems with going from a the twin 3" pipes then merging in to a single 3" to match up with the muffler and then extending the twin tips out to the rear bar? Assuming a little power loss, maybe even quieten it down even further. Would it be worth doing this or should i just run the risk the risk of a defect?

the muffler would surely become a bottle neck???
going from twin 3" to single 3" you cut down half of your pipe volume...

i want to use two of these on my exhaust when i go to twin 3" down the track... but the advantage of the maloo is the twin exit rear...

what you could do though is put them in place of the resonators, two 3" ones side by side, and then run pipes off them out the rear.....
so instead of the cannon look you just have normal tips but the mufflers are installed further forward on the car???????????????

A friend of mine and I have both experimented with this sort of thing a fair bit now.

What I would recommend is you put it into one and put a Varex on the end, this will reduce your flow, make it quiet, but also give it a bit of noise when it's open. It's basically a reasonably open muffler.

However, you also get a QTP QTEC (Electronic Exhaust Cutout) from here http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/index.php and place them in between the cats and the extractors.

Use this for race day or showing off.

This will be ****ing loud, ****ing awesome and will provide you with approximately 11 extra kilowatt.

This is what I will be doing after I get my turbo done.

Thanks for the tip, but ive decided ill be replacing the two centre muffler with varex items. Easier to fit and still remains twin 3".

I knew about the new Varex mufflers from XForce thanks to Daz's thread in the My Ride section but this solution sounds like a MUCH better way to go.

The butterfly wouldn't be able to be seen at all and even the mufflers themselves would be invisible without getting under the car.

Please keep us updated how you go with this and the results etc :D

From the research i did the Varex mufflers are 100% illegal on road cars.

So what does this muffler do for your tune, particularly turbo cars? If it's tuned for a certain exhaust flow and then you restrict the flow to half by adjusting the varex, isn't this potentialy detremental to the engine.

Have to know they're on the car for them to be illegal.

As mentioned before these would be the least of your worries. Cams and turbos on v8s are illegal without slips?! Emissions go out the window too. Dont quote me on that one. Not sure.

I'm sure you're right, but I'd also guess they wouldn't be more illegal than an exhaust over the dB limit anyway?

From the research i did the Varex mufflers are 100% illegal on road cars.

I really don't see why they would be.

Car companies like Ferrari/Lambo/Aston Martin/Jaguar and now the FG Fords and the upcoming W427 all use "semi active" exhaust systems. In that, like the Varez the exhausts contain a butterfly valve that can be opened to give more sound.

Granted, the semi active systems on those cars aren't controlled by the driver and are set to open at certain throttle/RPM positions. But in essence it's the same concept.

So if the Varex mufflers are illegal, then i really can't see why. Yes, the car may be illegal with the varex in the open position due to breaking the db limit, but i don't see why having the actual muffler installed would be.

Yes, these are possibly illegal because they are adjustable. But no one has said anything about them not being illegal. I just want to be able to quieten the exhaust right down when needed. And if no one else knows they are there then i shouldn't have a problem.

As for it affecting a tune, the idea of it is to close the muffler and have it quiet when idling around town, being pulled over by the cops, coming home late at night, early morning starts. The car is not going to be used at it's full potential with the muffler closed.

The Varex oval mufflers come in 2.5" and 3" inlet with single or twin tips. I will be using 2 oval mufflers with 3" inlet and single tip, obviously with the tip removed. There looks to be more than enough room underneath even with the motors sitting on top of the mufflers. I'll be sure to post up the results once it's completed.

I can't remember where I was reading it but I do recall hearing that some people were having issues with their Varex as the valve wouldn't seal 100% and it was making an annoying whistling noise in the closed position.
May want to check this out.

I,ve been thinking about doing something similar to my VZ SV6000, I have Pacemaker 4 into 1's , 3" high flow cats and twin 3" stainless xforce system and find it a bit on the loud side sometimes. I am unsure weather to change out the rear resinator with something to quiten it down or go some kind of setup with the varex as mentioned earlierthen having the option to have both loud and quiet.:confused::confused::confused:

Just got off the phone to one of the Vic distributors. Using the Varex mufflers as resinators would not work as there is not enough clearence. He told me that the muffler is 6" and with the mechanism on top is a total of 7" and needs atleast 2" clearence which even with standard height cars like mine is just to low to the ground, i had a look for my self and he was right...it just wont work.
