Today i got a call, from me mum saying she has got a flat tyre of her 2005 barina, so i go down to her house to swap it over for her. Bloodyhell(few choice words thrown out):flipoff:, i could not for the life of me could not get the nuts off, and the nut wrench has become slightly misshapen at the nut end. Mum say it had a service last week(holden dealer) and they rotated the tyres. So a call to roadside assist they use there own special torque wrech bar to undo them and he says that is a common problem with dealers there always too tight(as they use the wrattle guns i think). So i called the dealer saying that they can check the rest off the wheel nuts tomorrow morning and they can also pay for a new wheel nut wrench. Its going to be interesting to see what they say when the car is dropped off.

Common problem there mate, some people get too excited with the rattle guns or have them set wrong.

yep common as, my brothers vt broke 2 wheel studs at the same time courtesy of someone too eager with a rattle gun.

not sure about barinas, but pre ve commodore wheel nuts are only required to be 105nm from memory.

reading in the barina manual it said 110nm, at least she was home when it was flat.

It's the person using the rattle gun not the gun itself. The gun has a torque setting, most people never adjust it. Sometimes they spin the nuts on so fast it galls the threads, the studs snap off when removed.

It's also helpful with the studs to use a small dap of Anti-seize on the threads, not enough to notice, just enough to know it's there. Never use it on the nut mating surface.

If a rattle gun is used, use low setting then final torque with torque wrench to specs.

Cheers,
Steve

Yeah - ther techs get a little keen sometimes. Had to rotate my tyres the other day, couldn't crack the nuts using the standard cross style speed brace. Had to get my socket set 50cm breaker bar onto it - PITA!:flipoff:

I'm sure that overtightening the nuts contributes to front disc warpage and pulsing when using brakes.

and that would lead to more service requests and repairs by the dealership which is more money for the service department. Shucks!

all sorted today, got the nuts redone by holden service, and demanded a new wheel brace for damaging it while trying to undo the nuts(recieved it for free), took the flat down to bob janes and got that fixed and the bloke goes "yeah they all seem to just do the one tightness for all car option". while i was there i got some prices for tyres for my ve ute $502 for each corner for the original potenzas.
