Hey guys
about to purchase some rims
My ride is a vy ss currently sitting on the stock 18inch wheels. I have adjustable coilovers in the front and super lows in the back
My main concern is rubbing and ride comfort. All my mates have said go 20's but i am not sure. then there is what kind what colour etc
I am looking at the XHP Dirty dog.. and the zeneti throwback
also a few black rims with a chrome lip
but really i am just so confused
any help with a choice would be great guys

Go the 20's
I found my 19'' rims were more uncomfortable than my 20's
I think the type of tyre has alot to do with it aswell as the weight of the rim as a heavy rim will rebound harder than a lighter rim.
And the VY has a big arch and the 19's dont tend to fill them up

20s fill the guards perfectly on the VYs. There are so many wheels to choose from your better off just finding some you like and then going into a shop and putting some wheels up next to your car and see what they look like.
Just pick whatever wheel you like, dont worry about other people say

Iv had both on my old vy maloo. 19`s look small in the big vy arch! handeling and comfort and the same which ever way you go. as ASSASIN said, tyre has a huge affect to how it rides.
I just bought s set of 20`s off ebay for $2000 with tyres ballanced ready to go with a set of wheel nuts and lock nuts for my vx ss.
the rear scrubbed on the guard, got it rolled at the tyre factory for $90 took them 30-45 mins to do now it clears with to worries at all.

As soon as you fit bigger wheels you need to have the guards rolled, no questions asked. When I had my VN, I out wider 15s on it and I had to have the guards rolled. Then when I put 18s on it, there was no problems

Hey niicksey, I just put some VE 20's on my VY Monaro. I'm used to a firm ride so I'm not going to comment on the ride quality apart to say that I've got no problems with it.
But I'll lead you through what I went through to make it all fit.
As you want aftermarket rims you will be able to choose a rim that has the offsets you want. I was stuck with the standard GM offset which sort of wasn't a problem. But from what I can tell many people with VY's are putting on 30 series tyres on their 20's so they fit, or they are putting on narrow (say 225) tyres so they fit but for me those options are a comprimise.
I was able to put on 245/35/20's which look fantasic - they look like they were made to fit by the factory. The sidewall is a nice height and the tyres fill out the rims - I not a fan of a rim hanging out wider than the rubber.
But to make it all fit was a mission. I was lucky - I was also respraying the whole car at the time so I could do the bodywork properly.
First up to make 245/35's fit on the front you will need to do something with your front struts. Some go coil overs, I went the VY HSV GTS road as these struts have a higher bottom spring retainer. I've seen people bash their lower spring retainer so that the tyre clears but that's not an option for me. My advice is to start with the GTS struts - not as expensive as you may think.
You will need to roll the guards - totally, don't skimp with this.
For 245/35's you will also need to cut the rear bar. When the shop first told me they were going to do this I was thinking 'hey this is not good'. But it's essential and no problem. I compared my rear bar to another VY's rear bar and unless you knew what you were looking for then you wouldn't pick that mines been done.
It's also nice to have some big brakes behind 20's or it can also look real bad. I've got VZ HSV premiums and even they look small.
The GTS struts require a shorter spring just because the lower spring retainer is higher - so the ride will be affected. Of course if you are going to fork for new front springs then the backs are a no brainer.
Basically 19's tend to fit straight on. 20's can be easy if you get narrow rims and tyres and tyres with a tiny sidewall. But do some 20's properly and you will roll around with a half mongrel :)
edit: just realised in your first post that you have front coil overs - apologies for the rant on the struts.
Hey Niicksey I have been browsing this sight for a while, theres some great topics going on here so finally signed up...
I have a VY Clubsport and like my cars super low and as big a wheels possible. I'm running 20 x 8's all round with a 45p offset. Tyres are Continental Sport Contact 3 in size 245/30/20. These have an overall rolling diameter of 655mm and this is very close to the 235/40/18 Factory Tyre rolling diameter of 645mm.
By going to 35 profile on 20's as you've done GM Slave you end up with a rolling diameter quite a bit bigger than factory at approx 680mm. So yes you have to modify things to make it work.
I have pedders adjustable coilovers in the front and Maloo Super Super Low King Springs in the rear and it sits very low. With my set up i get no rubbing whatsoever and no mods were needed to the rear guards.
A mate is running 20 x 8.5" rims on his SS with same 45p offset and 245/30/20 Tires and similar ride height and he had to roll his rear guards as it rubbed slightly otherwise was all good.
If you have coil overs then the ride will be fine, I agree with ASSASIN it depends on the tires you get.
Cheers

geez.. thanks guys for ur imput. really appreciate it. Pretty much just want to be able to slam the rims on roll the guards and not really have any more issues. I think ill have to go the ultra low springs in the back so it still looks slammed haha
But i will keep you all updated on the progress
thanks again

Had 255/25/20's on all corners of my VZ running Pirelli P Zero Nero rubber sittling on Dobinson springs. Fronts rubbed a little on the inner spalsh guard on full lock and that was about it, if you can afford decent quality tyres then 20's are a sure bet.

I put 245/30/20's on and all that was needed was the guards rolled (they were scrubbing pretty badly), now it drive great, as for the ride surprisingly good.

Get a set of VE GTS (copies of course) painted or powder coated in black. Go 20 inch, as youre young and probably have no wife or kids, or 19 inch otherwise for a slightly smoother ride.

Hi Nico,
it really depends on what you use the car for. If you're getting the rims mainly for looks and do normal driving, go 20s. If you want to do some performance work (circuit racing) 19s and even 18s will do fine, as long as it's a high quality grippy tyre. In this kind of use steer away from copies though...
In normal driving no rubbing and ride comfort can be achieved with all sizes however there's less headaches with the smaller ones.
My 2c
Edit: No matter what you do don't cheap out on the tyres. That's your safety margin right there.

Depends on what you want out of your car.
Looks - definately the 20's.
I'v had 20's on mine now for about 6 months and am in the process of selling them and buying a nice set of 18's. I just don't want to put up with the rough ride and hearing "Your rims are slightly buckled" everytime i have a wheel balance done.
A nice set of GTO 18's with fat 245/40/18 tyres will do me just fine.
I find the rim size depends a lot on the type of rim you like. Some *need* to be 20inch to look good on a VY
My 19 inch XHP Boosts on my VY ute are often mistaken for 20s for some reason - perhaps the dish? With Kings super lows there is no scrubbing and no need to roll guards.
My 2c :)
