View Full Version : VE V8 engine cover changed?

One for the trainspotters among us (guilty as charged) - has the VE V8 engine cover changed? Mine has "Alloy V8" on the part covering the heads and the badge in the middle says "6.0 Gen 4" but I noticed in the SS v XR test in this month's Motor that the engine bay shot shows a cover with nothing on the heads and "V8 6.0 Litre" as the centre badge.

Is this another G8 thing?

For those that have the current Motor issue, compare the engine bay shot on p.58 with the shot in the CAPA ad on p.59.

(I took my engine cover off last night and was going to leave it off...but it's just too ugly without it. A set of split covers might be in order).

a little off topic here guys, but i notice your engine bay is same as my ve ssv ute grommz and it seems that there is a radiator shroud missing from top? are they all like this from new? i am sure i saw a previous thread awhile ago that someone had a cover or shroud that runs or fits between top of radiator and air intake?

I think mid year 07 they stopped putting the radiator covers on from factory you can still buy them though as i enquired about buying one before i put my OTRCAI on a couple of months back.

There about $35.00..

This is my SS, which I picked up as a demo in Mar 07. From memory its a late 06 build. It has different engine cover badges and no radiator cover.

My 08 SS doesn't have the 6.0L on the cover but does have the radiator shroud. I am going to replace my engine cover with a HSV one as I want some red under the hood.

Maybe mine is actually an early 07 instead then. Either that or I got jipped :bawl: I think I saw a suggestion elsewhere that the radiator covers stopped for all 07 cars, not just from mid 07.

On a slightly different slant, does anyone know if the radiator cover would still fit with a Russo OTR fitted?

My 13 Feb 07 car doesn't have the radiator cover, so maybe it's all 07 builds.

The engine cover changed at MY8.5 and the radiator cover was deleted at MY08.

Yeah also check out at the back of the engine bay on both sides there are two clips that Holden left out on my car, pretty sure it is on all of the VE's I've seen where they are missing....

Been looking at the split covers but wanted to know what the middle section is, is that ribbed section between split covers what is found under the current full cover?

How difficult is it to remove the old cover and add replacements?

I received a quote from over east for a set of split covers but they also included a clamp kit to secure them in the quote.

Like John has shown above my car 2007 is also missing the radiator cover and rear clips.

Yep.

Removing the old cover is simply a matter of lifting it up and taking it off - it's not fixed with screws or bolts or anything like that.

The clamp kit might just be a similar thing to the factory arrangement for holding them down - the factory cover has five or so 'clamps' to hold it on.

And why do Perth types say 'over east'? I've always found that strange :)

Like John has shown above my car 2007 is also missing the radiator cover and rear clips.

There's obviously some variation, as my car according to the VIN is a MY07 (IIRC built just before they had that closedown at the end of Feb 07 and then came back building MY08) and it doesn't have the radiator cover.

Yep, that's different to my Feb 07 build SS.

Some of the things deleted in the 07 models are,

Shroud over radiator, i put it back, looks pox without it.
Plastic clips near grille
Plastic clips holding the edges of the trim under the wipers, in each corner, you need to lift the bonnet to see these.
Plastic clips also in the following arears, front kick panels, rear panel under the seat at the back of the rear sill, plastic clips holding the edges of the rear parcel shelf.

No doubt there is more missing, just haven't found it yet.

All to save a few cents for GM.

Don't know what the clamp kit is but when I fitted the twin covers I had to modify the front and back of the drivers side to allow clearance for the hoses. I just cut it off and covered it with some edging available from Clarke Rubber.

Then when I clipped it on there was nothing to secure the outside edges (when looking at it from the front of the car) to. I reached under the cover and found there was nothing on the heads for the rubber cups to clip onto although there were tapped holes but no posts or bolts. Holden did have a part but from memory was around $9 per part (4 needed) so I went to Bunning’s speed shop and bought 4 gal bolts. Don't remember the thread (think they were 6 mm but not sure) and about 2" long. I then bolted the new bolts into the existing tapped holes and the rubber cones just clipped over the bolt head.

See on the pic below where I had to cut the covers. These are the covers off the last of the VZ which say 6.0 gen 4

Well I've just got an October '07 build V Calais and my engine cover is as follows AND I am missing the radiator cover ...

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/rudeboyrs/Calais/DSC01519Small.jpg

... and the clips on either side of the scuttle panel. I noticed this when I got the car home (I'm very picky and I have a very good eye) and I was going to take the car back to Holden and complain 'til I found this thread ...

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/rudeboyrs/Calais/DSC01522Small.jpg

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/rudeboyrs/Calais/DSC01524Small.jpg

I want to replace them all as the obvious holes look terrible IMO ... has anyone got the part numbers?

Moser.

Oh ... and I threw some AutoGlym Vinyl and Bumper Care through the bay and it cleaned up a treat ... even the silver on the engine cover ... highly recommended.
