View Full Version : Fan won't turn off
funny thing happened today - turned off the engine and the fan (inside the cabin) stayed on
turned engine over again, turned off & fan stays on at full speed
the aircon & fan work normally with engine running
disconnected the battery & it stops of course but re-connect battery & the fan is going flat out again with no keys in ignition
can anyone offer any comment?
(helpful comment that is)

mmm,
1. Did you try to wiggle the key in the ignition, and is it completely off.
Reason: Sometime the keychain gets a bit loaded with keys and could prematurely wear out the ignition switch. I have a vehicle that can be a bit funny about that, can actually pull the key out and leave running.
2.What happens if you turn the fan off manually? Off button/switch
Cheers,
Steve

1. Definitely completely off (windows, radio not working)
2. Fan stays on even when turned off at dash.

Sounds like your fan relay is shot, its pretty common. About 9 bucks from Holden will see you right. In the mean time pinch the one from your foggies so you dont flatten the battery.

Relay = fuse??

Pull the fuse box cover on the r/h side of the engine open and youll see it. It's a black square box about the size of an oxo cube :)

Yup, I agree. Sticking relay. The only time that the fans will "run on" is if the engine coolant temp is very high.

Coolant temp with interior fan.....Hmmmm
I would say the contacts inside the relay are stuffed then. I would locate relay and tap on it with your index finger. Couple of good pokes with a finger may knock it loose. Still replace anyway, but will know for certain if this works.

ok, pulled the blower fan relay & it kept blowing
put it back & pulled the blower F/L (fuse I gather) & it stopped
not sure what it all means

Just to clarify its the INTERIOR fan that we are talking about here?
If the interior fan is running even with the ignition off, you can remove the BLOWER fusible link under the bonnet to shut it off. If you have a vehicle with climate control, the FAN AMPLIFIER has packed up and needs to be replaced. If you don't have climate control then its just called a Fan Resistor.

It is the motor speed controller (Fan Amplifier) behind the glovebox near the fan...
Do a search and you will see lots of posts (even one from me)

Just tap the suspect relay to make it stop - until you get a replacement relay.

yep, interior fan
and ute has climate control
removing the BLOWER fusible link DID shut it off
it's not the relay - i swapped the relays about & same deal
I think Harvs82 and cashie are on the money
