No decent replys in the tar pit so here goes again.
My daughter is looking to purchase a new car and is interested in the Lancer VRX. Well priced at Drive away $29K at the moment. She likes the looks and the 5 year 130K warranty is attractive. She will get a manual.
What other cars in this size and price range should she be looking at and why would you buy one over the other. Hatch or sedan doesn't really matter.
Thanks

The lancer is a good preposition has all the safety kit to. ESC, 7 airbags from memory etc.
Theres also the mazda3 out there which is quite good to.

Thanks for replies. Yes wants new and warranty is good 5 year 130K.
Same spec in a mazda 3 and you need the sp23 which is quite a bit more.
I did have a loo, just can't think of many others in this range for value for money.
Obviously the Mazda 3 would have better resale in the future I would assume.

In this price range the only other car I would be looking at is the Subaru Impreza RX/RS.
Its definitely not as ugly as people make it out to be (just not exactly as "out there" as the previous models) and for around $26k (RX) or $29k (RS) you get AWD, a 2.5-litre engine and a 5-star safety rating.

I'd be in a 3, Focus, Astra CDTI or i30 CRDI before I even thought about buying a Lancer VRX. It might be better than the truly appalling old Lancers, but even the new one still feels cheap and nasty.
I would have a look at the Astra. My Mrs picked one up Thursday last week, Astra CDX, MY 8.5 with all the good gear including ESC, 6 airbags, etc etc + Leather seats + Bluetooth and rear parking sensors for $28,600 drive away and that was for an auto so take $2000 off for a manual = $26,600. Good time of the year to go new car shopping.
Not bagging the Lancers but my Mrs did not like the one she test drove a few weeks ago. Main complaints were that the steering wheel was way to busy with too many buttons, the dash was likewise, too busy and the doors were very tinny when they were shut. Nice heavy thump from the Astra.
Whatever the choice, I am sure she will make the right one.
Happy shopping.

We have an Astra as well and it can't be faulted, it's nearly 3 years old and never had a problem with it. as a previous poster noted it feels solid as well and is great on fuel ours is the 1.8 though and should be.
I do also like the look of the Mazda 3's .
Now that Mitsubishi is packing up and leaving Australia I wouldn't buy any of their products at any price and I feel the same way about Nissan as well.
cheers

I knew some one would pick up on that and you are right they have never been here as a manufacturer. I just didn't like the way Mitsubishi handled the whole shutdown thing, getting loads of govt grants and still pissing off. You can buy whatever car you want too I however won't ever buy a Mitsubishi or a Nissan .
cheers

I've been in the new Bits-a-misin Lancer and i really didnt like it, cheap and nasty like someone said above. Plus the outside stylin is :spew:
I would be looking at Mazda 3, Astra and the VW golfs as they are good cars as well. Not sure what the Peugeot 207 Hatchback are like, i liked them when i saw them at the motor show, they seemed to me pretty nice inside as well for a little hatchback. Although i have never been in one.

My uncle (a mechanic) said its a good thing they offer such an extensive warranty coz the quality and build of a Peiceashitty hasn't improved much.

theres quite a few focas, civic.corolla and astra there all pritty good cars I know a couple of people with the lancers and they flog the f@ck out of them and they take it pritty good and the warrenty on them is a big plus no other brand do it so they must be alright.
I didn't think the Astra CDX had ESP?
They never used to but the current model MY 8.5 now has it as standard.

the resale on the lancers is better than any on the market at present time, getting close to the new prices at auctions for a 8mth old car w 15-20k on the clock...
Safety, space and warranty are all good on the lancer and the man box is spot on imo...
Mazda3 is due for a revamp in the next 6-12 mths whick will affect the resale and still doent have a 5 start safety rating, astras are nice but have astronomical prices as far as parts and servicing, as do the golf, peugot etc due to european price of parts etc just my 2c

Wheels magazine have been driving a Ford Focus diesel of late that they absolutely rave about it. They have no idea as to why they aren't walking out the door.
Just a thought. Good luck.

my brother has a peugot 206 - im 6 foot 1 and cannot fit in the back (doesnt help that im a front rower, haha)
apart from that it is a very nice car
i also used to own an astra (06 model) - good little car, nice inside and out, good on fuel (sorta) and now with esp would be great for a girl (i had to sell mine - im WAY too big for them, my head would hit the roof if i sat straight!)
also took a test drive in a mazda 3 (helping girlfriend buy a car)
was very nice - bit bland inside but

Mechanically they should easilly last the warranty period. There isnt much that goes wrong with the drivetrain with Mitsis these days.

After searching for a new small car for about the last month or so I decided on a Mazda SP23 luxury. Out of all the small cars it got me cause it was one of the better looking ones and pretty zippy.
None of the new Lancers can have have their windows tinted.
Well, they can, but the plastic strip at the bottom of the window on the indside slices up the tint.

Another vote for the SP23. When we were looking for a new 2nd car this came out the best overall. 18 months later still very happy with it.

We looked at one of them. I gotta say I was not impressed at all, yes it had a lot of extras but looked cheap and tacky with that grey leather and plastic interior. Don't get me started on the looks of it either :spew:

god it was good to make some good gross for once! My ol man and I went and enquired about one a year and a half or so ago.. Were told there was at least a 3 month wait.. When we asked for their best price, they said the RRP is their best.. They also stated they didnt have to reduce the price coz they where selling so well.. They didint even have one on display as they sold it also, people where buying these cars based off images on the brochures.. !!!

Well exhaustive (is that a word) day today.
Test drove Lancer VRX, then Mazda sp23, then Subaru Impreza RS, then Golf then VRX again.
Subaru first to be cut, Still not sure on styling, noisy motor and a bit sluggish.
Golf, although probably handled the best and certainly felt strong with a quality build, wasn't overly nippy and just doesn't look as sporty as my daughter wants.
VRX, after 2 test drives, still unsure of external styling and didn't like the interior dash design and didn't feel as sure footed in the test drive.
Looks like the Mazda 3 SP23 is the pick and will probably sign tomorrow if we can get it a shade under $30K drive Away. (Without luxury pack)

Here is a sobering afterthought for you in your favour. Mitsubishi has just shut up shop in Oz so service/parts etc may have been a problem in the future. My pick out of all your options would have been the Mazda hands down. I have worked on alot of cars and it's very hard to beat the mazda as it has been engineered very well. When the fuel bug bites too hard for me I will be considering one myself although it may be an MPS. Well bought and congratulations on making a very informed decision with the best possible result.
