Just lets your crankcase breathe through the filter rather than the vapurs being sucked into the intake manifold via the pcv. stops oil building up in the intake etc...

Anything that helps eliminate oil vapours in the manifold is worth getting.
Note though: Something as pictured equates to venting crank case vapours to atmosphere which for EPA purposes is ... "not so good".
A sealed catchcan such as the one discussed in this thread ... http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=93656&highlight=catch+can ... will do essentially the same thing as a vented one whilst keeping the EPA happy.

And, correct me if I'm wrong Dave, using a sealed catch can will also limit the in-cabin oil smell that can happen with the oil breathers.

Not to mention on boosted applications these breather filter setups can pop off or break and cause flames in the engine bay when oil hits the hot exhaust manifolds during driving. Yes happend on an LS1 cruise to a turbo car in Sydney one night. Scarry thing to see.
Go catch can set up.
