OK guys wanting some opinions to help me make up my mind on selling the SS. So here's the story, it is very likely I will have a new job in a couple of weeks (I've had the interview and was basically given a verbal offer for the job but it has to go through management before it's official). Now with this job I will be travelling a total of 700km a week in my car getting to and from work, plus whatever on weekends.
Now I have a 2001 VX SS that has 79,090k's on it, which I consider to be quite low for this model. The decision I have is do I sell it now as I'd probably get few more $ than the average VX SS? and pass on a nice clean low k car to someone which would probably be easier to sell.
Or, do I just keep it and rack up the k's and sell it later on when I'm ready to update?
Fuel is not the issue, it is excellent on fuel for what it is and would easy get me 850+k's a tank commuting to work as it is all highway. I just don't want to ruin a good car by puting lots of k's on it.
Am thinking of getting a 4cyl car to use as a daily, but if i did that i'd still sell the SS and get something nicer as a weekend toy.
So what would you do in this situation?

Yeah don't know how a 4 cyl will go, I was even thinkin of picking up a cheap LS1 that has high k's and using that, maybe a calais or statesman, good for travelling.

I say keep the SS and enjoy it whilst you can :driving:. The amount you get for your SS will only buy a reasonable 4 cyl anyhow.
There will not be that much difference in price, between a low k VX or a higher K VX.
Just drive and enjoy your car , after all , that is what it`s all about

Mate, keep the SS, you will hate driving a 4 cyl and if the SS has done 120000 kms in a year it won't hurt it much.
What you will pay and lose for a 4cyl will out balance any loss on the SS anyway.
2 cars, that will cost more. Mate you obviously enjoy your SS so hang onto it and enjoy the drive to and from work every day, in 12 months look at updating to something else you enjoy driving.
BTW if you have to drive that far for work, your accountant might be able to suggest some tax benefits.
Good luck with your new job and enjoy your nice ride.
cheers. :)
4 cyl Pros - Cheap on fuel
4 cyl Cons - Slow, gutless, cramped, engine life
8 cyl Pros - Effortless power, spacious, engine life, street cred, comfortable
8 cyl Cons - Fuel consumption.
Let's play spot the winner!
Keep your car mate, cos the very first hill you come to, you'll wish you had that big chevy power plant to get you up it, instead of Hyundai's crappy korean special.

I would keep it. At freeway speeds the car will be quite economical. I find bigger cars more comfortable to drive on the freeway. There are plenty of LS1’s with big kms running reliable if looked after well (have a search of the forum). Highway Kms are the best to rack up.
If it is pure economics do your numbers. If you do swap consider a diesel.

I'll bet there are plenty of guys on this forum that would think you are lucky be able to drive 700 kms a week to work in a 6 speed manual SS on Highways instead of catching a bus or train into the city to get to work.
I know which way I would prefer to travel.
Enjoy your ride mate. :)

Put it on Gas, and keep- the best of both worlds
I know people generally arent fans of LS1's on Gas, but from obersvations they dont seem too bad. But youll just about half your fuel bill.- Though i read that wasnt really a problem for you.
As for the mileage, you can get 400,000 no problems, plenty of WH Statesman hirecars will well over 350,000 on them no problems. Especially if its highway work, itll virtually last forever. Why let someone else drive your SS, when you crammed into a small hatchback- enjoy the comfort and the power for several more years at least.

Do what you think's right Daniel.
People seem to think that just because something is a 4cyl it's cramped and gutless.
Ever heard of Mazda 3 SP, Subaru Outback, Mazda 6?
All 4 cylindar cars with assloads of leg room, bloody good creature comforts and good power for what they are.
My advice is ... work out what you'll get for your SS Daniel (Not what you want ... what you'll actually get in your hand) ... THEN check out carpoint/carsales etc and see what sort of 4cyl car that would get you.
Decision should pretty much make itself after that. You'll either be happy with what you come up with or you won't.
Re: selling and buying a higher KM LS1 ... false economics. Even if you ran up 30000km in your first year of work ... your SS would only have cracked the magic Tonne which in VX terms is still low km.
Good luck with your decision. I'm weighing up things much the same as you and not having a great deal of fun I gotta say.

Sounds like me in my last job,
I only had a VY 6, and i had the offer of getting a company car or something else.
In all honesty even if you rack up mega kays on it you might lose say 2grand when you go too sell it.
In all honesty when your tavelling that far ( i used to to up to 1500 a week ) you thank to god you in your own comftorble car that your used too and not some harsh new car.. believe me youl regret it.
Just use your own car it honestly wont make much difference to the price when you go too sell it you need to remember, a VX has done most of its depreciating by now, high or low kays might be the difference between 1500 dollars.
Are you willing to sacrifice your comfort for 1500 dollars?

I don't think you would get what the SS is "worth" in the current environment, so you might as well keep it. Just rack up the K's on a nice car and when you have to update you can better assess what the market is doing with fuel costs etc and then buy a car that best suits your needs/desires!

Well there's about 9 or so definate votes for keep it, and no sell votes hmmm. I do want to keep it, basically just need to see what people think of the value of a high k car vs a low k car.
I agree with the majority you that a car such as my SS is much better to travel in on the highway, good torque for hills, adequate overtaking power :) and good on fuel.
No I would definately not put it on gas, I need the boot space, can only just fit my bike in there now with both wheels removed. (holden really should have a 60/40 fold down seat). Plus fuel is not the issue here.
Thanks whitels1ss for the tip on tax benefits, I'll look into that.
At this stage I still may put it on the market and see if I can get any interest in it. I am able to update now, so will see how it goes. I was thinking of stepping up to a VY SS ute, but not sure if it's worth doing as I will still have the same LS1 engine, but updated interior. Would like a 6 litre if I can, so might start looking for a MY06 vz ss ute.

I moved up the Coast at XMas 07 and commute to Chatswood everyday. So I've been doing 800kms a week in my VT; it had 95k (low for a VT) on it and 5.5months later it's now 125k.
I don't regret it though. I much rather keep using my SS than sell for a 4cyl. By the time you sell it and buy a replacement you'll have lost out for sure I would think.
