basically want the VE SSV grill minus the Holden badge and the black circle backing that the badge is glued on...
dont like the chev stuff....dont like the massive holden badge...want the clean look with it gone and just the "mesh"
similar to this drawing

Dude, thats exactly what i've been thinking of, I was going to buy one and chop it up and plastic weld it back together. Yeh i know, it would have been crap.
All I want is the grill without the badge, but that pic looks hot and exactly what I would buy if it were available. I think you got the HSV front bumper?
I tried without the hsv bumper, yours looks better though :P
I can't post a link yet, could you mock up one with just the standard SSV bumper?

get it laser cut out of aluiminium, then powdercoat or anodize it to suit.

When i buy a VE this is exactly what i wanted to do. I'm amazed no one has made something similar to this yet as it looks much better than standard and there would be a good market for it. would be good if holden made the top piece like they make the lower grill piece as then it would be just a straight swap.

The SS's look mean at the front, and that just makes it look meaner! :vpo:

would it be possible to to find out who makes the standard front plastic? surely holden outsources this?
and if so ask them to make a 1000 units. im sure you'd sell them pretty quickly.

plus you have to pay for design and the most expensive part which is tooling.
and then after that, i doubt holdens supplier would be interested doing it in such low numbers (1000 is bugger all for them) so you would probably need to get it done at another place or overseas.
for low numbers your best bet is to get it machined out of plastic, or as sugested laser cut out of aluminium, and if the numbers get a little higher you could move to low volume soft tooling. but either way its not going to be cheap and easy
daoutlawz
06-06-2008, 11:57 AM
Yeah, there's no way holden's supplier would do it, and whos going to fork out the initial cash to set it up..
If we get enought people here who want it, maybe we could try and fetch a price.
It would be worth it coz it would be unique

I think it would look good to have similar to a chev grille, but without the bowtie, just the silver strip. Could modify a chev grille with some ally sheet to do it. It'd look smooth as from the images in my head :1peek:

hopefully i will have the real thing soon. :)u will find that u take the badge off but the black round plastic that the badge is glued on still stays on and u cant take that off and have a clean honeycomb style grill....hence why u need to get a new grill from scratch

Yeah i was going to see if i could make a mold of the mesh-grill area, cut the badge and backing off and make something out of plastic or fiberglass.
If it turns out any good i will take some pics and show you guys how it looks. Could even make some more up if it turns out OK and doesn't take to much time.
Hopefully i will have something tomorrow afternoon. :)

laser cut ally insert and then powder coat in black would be the ticket. Done right you would laser the mounting tabs into it.
Give Laser and Allied a go. Draw it in cad and cut away.............

Yep this exactly what we want. 100% air flow for OTR's. I reckon the chev grilles block a bit of air flow because of the chrome strip.
I'll have one!

I like your thinking mate. I have done similar, but with silver. It's just the mesh you can buy at Autobarn, and is avail in a few colours including black. Moulded rubber edging from Clark Rubber. All up was around $40.
Just a thought if the plastic route doesn't work out. If it does though, I wonder how it would look chromed? (for me.... I know you're after the black clean look). Keep us posted!

If you need it drawn up in a format that can be used for laser cutting it shouldent be a problem . They are switching over to SolidWorks at work and i had the IT bloke installed the demo copy on my home pc , it doesn't really show in that pic but the holes are 9mm af @ 11mm spacing and the piece their on is about 300x100x3MM
Here's one with the Chev logo insted of hex holes & mounting tabs as HOWQUICK suggested (again just to give you an idea and not to any particular measurement) .

Yep, ran out of time.
There was nothing at work i could use, I bought some latex yesterday to make the mold. During the week i will make molds etc, and see how it turns out.
Looks like it will take a fair amount of time though. Might not be worth it. :(

They don't have a laser cutter so the Chevy bow-tie would probably be to complex , They can punch mesh and have hexagonal shaped punches .
I have drawn parts that have been laser cut but I'm not too sure how it would go shapes like that close together , with the turret punches you get a little stretching with each hole punched and the material bows . Putting it through a set of rollers fixes that.

I was thinking about how mean this would look on the front of the VE.
I think the chrome mesh might be too much. Very keen to see what you guys come up with. i'm interested.

there are many websites of companies in the u.s that make custom grilles, have a look on google and see how you go, just an idea

I've been looking for this as well, over the time I have found "custom car grills" on Google and they provide the service of creating a custom grill. However the following quote from their FAQ is what put me off to getting it done:
"Full blown custom grills are going to be priced at a premium. To get a "one off" grill complete you will need to incur all the one time tooling, material, time, and R&D assuming it is possible."
Maybe if a lot of people get in, the costs won't be so great. Just a suggestion.
Good luck though, cause I'm really interested in this as well.

In saying that ZIGGY'S grille is full of chev cutouts haha
