View Full Version : Is a Vy IAT on a VE worth the effort ??

I am running a Maf tune on my VE R8 (cammed) and are happy with the drivability and power so going Mafless at the moment seems pointless. I have seen some threads were the standard maf located IAT has been disconnected and a Vy IAT has been connected to the inside of the OTR etc for better readings..Is this worth doing ? I am using the CSV OTR and the VE Maf..

Cheers

hi mate, if your going to move it anywhere you should do it properly and hang it down infront of the grill, i did the relocation on a mates ve ss ute last week fitted with a ziggy otr, maffless, and also i did it an hour ago on my mums vz ss, its a maf tune but uses the same maf as the ve, so i just choipped the wires and relocated it infront of the grill, the colder it senses the better,

also what your in for is:
IAT sensor from holden, or just find a wrecked vt,x,y the sensor will be in either the intake pipe or the airbox (model depending), which will be a cheaper option as the sensor from holden is $56 WITHOUT THE PLUG/WIRING HARNESS, so its easier to give someone $10 for the whole thing, then its just a simple cut the 2 BROWN WIRES in the maf loom and wire them what ever way you want as is doesnt matter.
Hope this helps

The MAF can be modified to push the IAT sensor into the airflow alot more. Simon (swingtan) has just done this and has some very positive logs and some nice pics. Also was tested on a VE with the same results.

hi mate, if your going to move it anywhere you should do it properly and hang it down infront of the grill!
I don't like that idea as you are not reading the air going into the OTR but the air from some distance away. It is probably 99.9% safe but for the sake of the 0.1% I'd prefer to know I am actually reading the air temp as it goes into the OTR.

From my point of view Daz, having been right through the exercise trying various things along the way with the assistance of the fantastic little scangauge I was selling to members on here (no profit, just what it cost me to get them in), it is most definitely worth doing!!

As soon as your IATs go over 40C the ECU starts pulling timing and you'd be amazed at how often it is over that on a standard car. In fact from memory during summer mine was almost constantly over that even on the highway as IATs taken from the standard sensor position are around 10C over ambient on the road at cruise and go up quickly as soon as you stop. In traffic or even worse after the car has been turned off for a while IATs around 60C and even higher are usually seen!! Not only that, they take forever to slowly come down and remain higher than they would if the car had not been parked.

With the IAT mod I described in Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=94472) my IATs are now exactly the same as ambient when I'm on the move over about 25kmh and even if I have been parked for a while, within 500m or less at cruise they are back to ambient. The other alternative with the CSV OTR is to protect the MAF from heat from the engine as Ron SS did with his. (Pics in a thread somewhere - probably My Ride??).

Gaz

i know this is an old thread but did the move the ait mod to day from the back to the front top lip of the OTR didn't make much diff still about 10 deg over ambient
but when it was at the back it did not come down as quick
and if you left the lid of temps go in to the 65deg rang double the amend at 100km so it doesnt look like my bonnet scoops work at all because they are right over the top of the ait with the lid off fans must be blowing air out in stead of wind blowing in ??

Sounds like your scoops are playing havoc with the airflow because positioned at the front of the OTR the IAT should be getting ambient, or close to it, once you are on the move.

In the Ve's if you fit them down low behind the front bar they relay much more accurate readings. Mine was done and did notice an improvement especially with throttle response after the car was warmer.
IMO it is worth the mod.
Worth a few kw's too. Every one counts when you chasing them too:yup:

Andy.

will be shifting it to the front bar to morrow

I moved my IT to a area which i think is allot safer then behind the bar as it is relative to the airflow actually entering the intake,
Easy to do and looks good,

VY sensor pulled apart

INSTALLED IN AIRFLOW AT FRONT OF INTAKE

Some heat shield, underside of intake

Finished job,

All up Noticed quite a difference in and around the city, where the car is quite warm!

mate :goodjob:
your otr is protected from hot air from the engine bay a lot better then mine SS INDUCTIONS by the plastic shrouding at the sides i put my ait in nearly the same place as yours IN THE TOP LIP under GROWLER and still showed 10deg above ambient i think im geting blow back from the vents in the bonnet as well and they are spreading the hot air every where :bawl:

Yeah, mine sits around 2-3 max above ambient, Will climb to around 10 15 when stopped at lights, but drops instantly once moving, :goodjob:

WELL moved it to the front bar took it for drive and was loging it with efilive was runing on 28 C ambaint for about 20 mins then it went hard over to 140C drove along for awhile then it came back to 28 C then it went to 140 again so pulled over and gave the sensor a riggle went back to 28 started to drive of it went to again 140 so drove home had a look at the log and couldent see any diff between when it was on 28 and when it was on 140 except the AIT GAGE reading ????

HOW DO YOU KNOW if your IAT sensor is stuffed on a maffles tune un less you log it
doesent throw a fault code or any thing mine is not working at the moment and you cant tell the diff ????

well went to by a new one vy type $30 from auto motive services up here small type with rubber grommet same as i have
but the earlier ones with the big round disc fitting are $11 in a OEM BAG ??
are they compatible the plugs are the same what about the voltage settings
big diff in price ????
the $11 one would be easer to mount in the otr as it has a round flat flange that you can just glue in must be the ones that go in to the bottom of the air box
