OK to run engine with no cooling system
So Im finishing up bolting together the engine on my cam install, and I want to turn the engine over and test the oil pressure before bolting up the water pump and putting in fluid. I just want to avoid having to drop the collant again if I have to get to take the timing cover off again. Engine would only be run for 2-3 mins if lucky, so would it be ok or a no no?
Re: OK to run engine with no cooling system
Yep should be fine, engine will barely have enough time to heat up, i wouldn't be going for much longer than a minute though just to be on the safe side.
Re: OK to run engine with no cooling system
whta he said, should be ok for a quick idle and then shut off..
Re: OK to run engine with no cooling system
Running it with out a water pump is very wise...the seal will burn out if not in water...
1 to 2 mins max.
But check ya info on ya cam you should hold the revs above idle when running in at start up. Pour oil over the cam just before starting if possible

Its not a solid cam dude - can't believe people still sprouting this crap on a modern motor!
Anyway, on topic, turn it over without the leads off the plugs and a gauge in place of the oil pressure sender - check you have good pressure, then reassemble and start her up!

As i said check ya cam info and you quoted me. ya knob

Yes you did, but then you went on to say something COMPLETELY wrong - so I think the comment remains fair.........

turn it over WITH* the leads off the plugs and a gauge in place of the oil pressure sender - check you have good pressure, then reassemble and start her up!
Re: OK to run engine with no cooling system
Cheers Roonstain, going to do that (turn over without spark) just to prime the system, but plan on running it to check oil pressure and leaks before final reassemble
Re: OK to run engine with no cooling system
Leaks wont really show until there is some heat into it. So start it to check oil pressure as that'll take less than 30 seconds.
