Hi guys got vx ss commodore with 232/234 cam 3000 stallie standard gears atm 3.07. Im happy with car its drives really good all line etc but was told would be better with gears changed. Its a daily driver town mostly but there will be highway use. I will take it to drags only now and then more of family car atm. Dont know anyone in rockhampton area who has done it so cant really go for a drive to find out and want to sort of get it right first go.
3.7 are perfect

I went 3.7 and barely noticed the difference. The difference between 3.7 and 3.9 isn't much at 100kph so I'd go the 3.9's if I had my time again.
Read this topic it has all the information you're after on opinions, I went from 3.07 to 3.46 purely because I do a fair amount of highway driving, though I would assume 3.7's would be fine for my car also. One thing to mention it was a massive improvement in take off, I can only imagine 3.7/9's would only be better. Since you said you do a lot of town driving go the 3.9's you wont regret it!

I went from 3.07 to 4.11, with 60% of my driving is in an 80 zone. I love them, and glad I didn't go for anything less. You really notice a huge difference taking off in 1st gear.
To give you an idea of revs at 100km/h
3.07 1790
3.46 2017
3.73 2175
3.91 2280
4.11 2396
With 3.07 and the A4 you will get @ 5500rpm 71km/h, with 4.11 it's 53km/h
If you want an idea of the revs, cruse around in 3rd. With a 3.07 in 3rd it's roughly equivalent revs to 4th with a 4.00:1 ratio. (we don't have a 4.0 to 1, but it gives you an idea)
Around town the shorted the ratio, the better the fuel economy; but the opposite is true for country(you may use an extra 1 - 1.5L/100 country with 4.11). With my overal driving I'm averaging better with 4.11 than before when I had 3.07.
You have already got a decent stally ratio, I would look at 3.7 or 3.9. There is not much difference between the 2 really.

I have 3.9's in mine and it revs at about 2500rpm at 110km/h and uses a fair bit if juice in the freeway. Stop and start traffic driving can also be painful as the gearbox always wants to shift into second gear, other that that it's a great mod to do. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for this, I was thinking the same thing for my Monaro but wasn't sure how much of a difference it would make on the Highway.... Time to find myself some 3.9's or 4.11's ( screw the fuel :P )Quote:

FWIW in my opinion 3.46 gives a huge change from the 3.07 in an A4 and it is still great on the highway.
(Not much ratio change to pick between 3.46 going to 3.7's anyway compared with having 3.07's and changing to 3.46's.)
You can pick up second hand 3.46 set of gears cheap and being genuine Holden they should not be noisey, unlike plenty of the aftermarket 3.7's & 3.9's. ;)
I have heard some people say that 3.46 in an A4 is like changing to a 3.91 in a 6 speed Manual.;)

Whitels1ss, you are spot on with the 3.46 upgrade with the auto, I have this upgrade currently with my WK, they are great for highway and give alot more poke off the line than the 3.07's ever could, but the one problem with the 3.46's is they only fix the 'little bit more' disease for awhile, I am about to put 3.91's in mine in the next couple of days and cant wait! It also (like everyone on here says) comes down to personal preference, I want to hit the 1/4 mile soon & being a big heavy car I need all the grunt off the line I can get, if I wasn't going to race it id leave the 3.46's in.Quote:
