The old 5.7L strokers - VR/VS GTS - Peformance?
Hi guys,
I know its not a LS1 but I thought most of you should know a bit about the VR/VS GTS 5.7L strokers. I'm soon to be in the market for a secondhand car and on the top of my list is one of these. Just wondering how these perform in comparison to the modern Gen IIIs. Are they way behind or is it right up there?
I did a comparison of power to weight and the post 2001 SS kills it. But interestingly I then did a torque to weight comparison and the old GTS comes out on top.
What would one of these run down the 1/4 mile stock? How well do they respond to mild mods like exhaust, intake and chip?
Any major things I should look out for when I'm hunting?
Thanks in advance

harsher motor, used around 17-18L per 100km, all of them would be tired now..... go for a Gen 3, do yourself a favor

A guy I worked with owns a vt stroked 5.7L senator and a vy calais 5.7L and he always prefered the gen3 but said he could still have fun with the stroker giving it a thrashing. But now his vy is tuned and it would mop the floor with the stroker 5.7L.

I think Chev is on the money with that one. My Bog Stock VS GTS did 14.5 down the quater. They leave the LS1 for dead in terms of torque, only the LS2 is really on an equal playing field when it comes to this low down torque.
Fuel economy as chev mentioned is shit, mine used to average upto 20L/100Km around town.
If you want one for love, then get it, if you want it for performance then go the LS1, to get even near the same power outputs, u need to be a drug smuggler or gotten really lucky at the casino

Bugga...not really what I wanted to hear but that is why I asked the question :errr: I just love the sound of the older V8s. The modern 8s are just too tame.
I really don't want to spend more than $15-$20k so that puts the GEN IIIs out of reach.
I wonder if COME has a package.....

VS GTS is good for low 14 second quarter. HSV's unofficial best was 13.9 on a prepped strip with perfect conditions. Even my barge arse VT Senator produced 14.4 on its (and my) first strip outing)
Not sure about harsher motors, these thing are smooth as silk.
Mileage is around 14.5 - 15.5 for a nicely driven auto. very consistant.
You dont "chip" these things, get the exhaust and headers done and then get the stock Memcal remapped (similar to edit with the Gen3).
The stock manifold impedes the performance gains as they are designed for 5.0 air flow and torque generation. If you want a nice car for cruisng and the odd squirt and aren't going to fark with it they are a good machine.
If you want all out power and bang for buck you cant be the $$$/kw of a LS1.

Do a search, but basically your bottle neck in the Strokers that stops power is the manifold, put a really phat twin throttle body on and you can get a shit load more power out of them. Be aware though u can pay upwards of $5k just for the TTB's!!!

Your not looking very hard u will find VT's & VX's in ur price range, especially after some talking.
Re: The old 5.7L strokers - VR/VS GTS - Peformance?
I agree with HRT Stroker, Fuel economy can range from 14lt to 20lt around town it all depends on how you drive. On the highway i can average around
9-10lt. A guy on SC forum who is currently installing a blower managed 14.1 i think with a slipping clutch and his was bog stock. If your on a budget for bolt-on modifications the LS1 is a better option for producing better power but you will still have great fun in a GTS, however to find a well looked after VR/VS GTS is becoming increasingly difficult as most have had a hard time due to the make up of the car. Goodluck with the purchase, let us know how you go.

Mate you are right in LS1 Territory! 2001 VX SS's are going for 18k. Seen an adbundance of LS1 01 VX Calais's going for around the 17-18k mark too.
Cheers
