I think you miss the point too, Holden/HSV are designed and built solely on the expectation of a single market (Australia), these other cars you talk of including the new joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, are all designed and built on a global scale. It's much easier to spread the cost of design and manufacture of a sales expectation of 500000 as opposed to 70000. Remembering also we have some of the highest manufacturing costs in the world.

Well yes, Holden, HSV have a small volume market in Australia, however these cars are (are/were) exported globally as well. If the pricing reflected the small amount of R&D compared to the big players then it wouldnt be a problem. Paying through the nose is the issue
We get charged what we do in Australia as the manufacturers work on MASSIVE profit margins from a public that willingly lap it up and dont ask a lot from their cars. No underdog, small volume thing, we are talking about GM here one of the biggest players in the world, not some good old boys in Elizabef running moonshine.
P.S. I dont enjoy paying more for less car, so bring on the less for more car thing :cool:

Since I haven't a clue as to the amount spent on R&D by HSV, I won't even have a guess, but you must take into account that this is amortised over very small volumes.
Whilst HSV's total volume is , what 4500? in some cases the tooling and R&D has to be amortised over maybe 200 cars for each model in their range - eg Senator, so the amortisation per unit is very high.
There's also lots of double-handling in the build. It's not like they fit a set of wheels, springs shocks, brakes as the cars come down a slick production line. They must first remove the OE stuff before fitting all the model-specific items.
At the same time, I'm also pretty sure that the margins also remain quite healthy...
Well its been a week since I started this discussion and with 200+ posts and 6000 odd veiws I guess ppl are interested in what HSV are doing . . . but there is no real standout point or suggestion for reinventing the wheel at Clayton!
But after all the talk. . . I still don't know what I really want from HSV either!!! . . . although a genuine hero car would be nice!!!
The old win on sunday and sell on monday line is still promoted by the Racing fraternity but I struggle with that . . . it was good back in the day when you bought an XU1 or GTHO or A9X and raced it . . . or even when you could own a Group A Homologation Special and at least feel you were close to the Race Team. . . but today that is GONE . . long Gone and I for one would like to see something return!!
Apart from better QC and more exclusativity, I would like to be able to buy something that resembled a car that found its way onto the track . . in some shape or form. . . and here is my idea. . . or should I say - wish
Holden & Ford to embrace a IROC style of event that supports the V8Supercar series with a round in each state . . eg Adelaide (Clipsal), Melbourne (AGP), Tassie, Sydney (Homebush), Queensland (GC), Darwin and Barbagallo . . . 7 races only . . . 6 fords and 6 holdens . . . prepped by HSV and FPV as ROC Editions!!! but the punter can buy a street (non caged) version from his local dealer . . . 12 cars (6 of each) driven by the 6 top Holden & Ford V8SC Drivers as a support category with 5 lap races at the seven meetings . . this would interest me. . . and I may well be more interested in the result of this ROC series than the Main Game!!! . . . but the thing is . . . I can own one . . . then the win on sunday sell on monday may return to the market.
