I'll add that its also free on the Vodafone $29 plan for 24 months.

Yeah, I've been a Vodafone customer for 13 years.
I'm only looking at Telstra plans ;)
I picked my SGS2 up on Virgin's $49. Free access for 3 months, $550 calls free text and 2gb data. I've not had much play time with iphones but im real happy with my S2, does every thing i want it to and even though its bigger then the iphone feels less bulky in hand.
I'd be holding out til the next tegra (or TI/Qualcomm for that matter) quad-core phones come out (early next year it seems).
Especially with the big change to ICS you'll have more choice then. Right now it's either Nexus for ICS, or a last-gen phone with Gingerbread which may/may not get ICS.
The thing that lets down the Nexus for me is lack of SD card. Great if you live in the US and data rates are bugger all so you can stream your music and stuff over the net all the time, but crap for down here. As far as hardware the Nexus isn't even that exciting, old-gen cpu chipset and everything else is about the same as most dual-core phones these days.
Yes, battery life worse than the iPhone. No wonder the android fanboys want quick assess to things like turning Bluetooth and wifi off as you have to in order to salvage some reasonable battery life. I leave those radios on with the iPhone and battery life is much better than the SGN. I hope with a few more cycles the battery improves. Even with what seems an aggressively dimmed screen on auto brightness it's pretty poor. I'm surprised that smart phone manufacturers persist in putting slim form factor over battery life. Is this a marketing thing? I daresay most of us would happily trade some slimness for better battery life.
 Big screens use lots of power. The screen is physically larger with more pixels than the GS2. The GS2 battery is 1650mAh, the Nexus is 1750mAh. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out what the limiting factor is going to be. Still getting 2 days use from the GS2 before needing to charge.
Maybe people should do some reading of reviews before making a purchase Vulture. You'll find that the radios have little effect on the battery life unless you're in a low service area. All the reviews I've read on the Nexus have said the battery life is bad. That probably means the battery life will be bad.
Use the internets. You obviously all have it.
This is not levelled at any of the phone manufacturers.
For me, my phone's greatest priority/function is to act as an emergency contact device.
If I'm broken down, I want to be able to call for help.
Currently I'm using a 5 year old not "smart phone" (though it can browse the Internet). Even with its original 5 year old battery, I can still get a solid 3 days of usage without fear. If I got a new battery, I'm sure it would be back close to a week like it used to.
If I was going camping, and leaving Friday night, to come back Sunday night, I could rely on the phone to be on, fully functioning, and able to act as an emergency device. I could trust it.
Would you trust your phone ... And by trust, I mean with your life? I know that is over dramatizing it, but would you feel safe with your 2 days of use? Or is it two days so long as there is a charger nearby
I used to get two days out of my android phone too ... However I wouldnt "trust" it as an emergency. Some times it was sketchy, sometimes I would get one day. It was inconsistent.
I have an original US model iPhone here that I still use as well. It easily gets 5 days standby. However it is 2G only, which saves battery by an amazing amount.
I'm with vulture. Increase the size by 2mm .... Heck, even 3mm ... And get another days use. Though it's hard to win the war based on pissing
I don't go camping and I if I did I certainly wouldn't rely on a mobile phone, which relies on mobile phone coverage, to be my emergency contact device. If everyone was thinking along those lines then every single carrier bar Telstra with its NextG coverage would be out of business. Vodaphone has drop outs in the middle of Perth ffs.
Just about all phones can still be switched to 2G. The SG2 has an advertised 2G battery life of "up to" 710 hours (29 days). That's compared to the original iPhones advertised "up to" 250 hours (10 days). Apples with apples. It all comes down to what you want from your phone.
None the less, I whole-heartedly agree that a mobile device that does not achieve a full day of regular use is very questionable. If you're a 3G internet and HD gaming fiend in a low service area then that's a different matter.
I agree, I certainly wouldn't trust my phone as an emergency device. I spend 2/3 of my life working out in the middle of nowhere where nothing works except Sat phones so there's no need to trust it that far... But of course Telstra gets more reception than any other carrier so that's more of a limiting factor than battery life.
I must also say my SGN's battery life has improved a lot in its first week. Would now go for a day and a half without charge... But I have also got a second battery on the way which can be charged out of the phone. Pretty good option for 'emergencies' if you've got a spare thats not getting discharged ;)
Also have a car charger and it runs off the MicroUSB so plenty of options to charge it off my laptop if need be.
But its NextG reception is questionable now... Might have been better to buy the Telstra version even though i've flashed the Telstra radio on there. It's very hit and miss!
Just bought the 12 year old a Samsung GS 2 for Chrissy. Its her first phone. $29 a month, $180 free calls. Free calls to 3 or vodafone (My wife and I are on 3) 200mb of data.
I was a tad worried about the data so for an extra $4 a month we get 900mb of data.
My question...She has an Ipod touch and does most of her stuff on that through WIFI connections. If we tell her to be careful with data usage, (yeah right) will 900mb be enough or will we get 'surprised'. We will be telling her to check daily her usage via the 15XX text number and she is reasonably responsible.
Does the plan seem ok considering the majority of her calls (and ours to hers) will be free?
She may be responsible, but she's also 12. She might get sent a link to a funny youtube video, and without even thinking about the amount of data she'll watch it and then watch a couple more while she's on there. There are also some apps that are small to download, but when you open them up they then download all their additional data files, sometimes hundreds of MBs. Before you know it that data is gone quicker than you can blink and your up for a bill like the guy in another thread on here.
I highly recommend that before you even hand the phone to her you go to Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Use Packet Data .... and turn it OFF. That way it will just update emails and allow her to watch Youtube etc when she is in range of your wifi. She can always go and turn it on again is she's out and wants to do a quick check of emails or facebook update. You can also download 3G Watchdog and set it to a quota of 30mb per day, then put the widget on her main screen. It will show her how much 3G data all her apps have used and changes to red and alerts her if she's running close.
Definately agree with the above.
Depends how much she uses it away from home I guess. It will always be connected to your WiFi network so won't use anything there but it doesn't take long to chew up 30Mb a day either...
Thanks for the response guys. Wow..didnt know it can use the WIFI when we are at home...I must visit the 21st century one day.
She is very tech savvy and I will get her to work out those apps mentioned. Should take her about 3 minutes, and then about 3 hours to explain to me.
Now..based on all that...does the plan sound OK?
I would see how you go.
If she's using it a lot away from home - bear in mind its school holidays so might get less (or more) use during school terms, then look at changing the plan.
With plans you can generally go up for free but not the other way around. So if she's constantly chewing thru it, then you can move up to a higher plan easily. Or get her to curb her habbits, which may not be as easy :)
