This years xmas present is going to take some beating for him, but that is a great place to start Ed.

So, it's been a few days and few good trips; I've put about 450km on the new ride .............. it's beautiful, rides like a pleasure cruiser, has plenty of beans when you kick her in the guts, sound quite nice at full noise and idle and the interior is such a huge leap forward from the VY and smells so neeeeeew.
But damn ......... I took the VY for a good fang this arvo and the 2 are soooooooo different. The VY is such a 'visceral' experience, towey and twitchy as fark and all noise and squeaks and loud as hell .......... the VF is soooo refined and 'pleasant' ............

It's gunna be a problem with the minister ............. :deal:
Congrats on the new/second hand car. As for security, a BCM lock which is basically you setting a PIN code which stops anyone without the code. Obdsync is one of the tools that can do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYkAikcCJ3Y
Also horn bypass/relocation as well.
Cheers mate, I have decided on the IGLA full alarm (additional backup siren, tilt, shock, motion sensors plus internal cabin screamer siren) and Solid GPS tracker (Solid GPS trackers recently purchased and already installed in the VF and my daughters VE Wagon ....... she's a bigger tragic than me I rek'n). I'll have a chat to the installer when I drop the VF in next week and see what else he recommends (I might even have some $$$ left over to do an Apple CarPlay update .......... the MyLink stuff is a little lacking ...)
So, my thoughts to date ........ The Princess and the Whore!
I've spent a few days wondering if I have done the right thing Dah Dah Daaaaaaaaaaah! (dramatic music) ............ Now, hear me out ............. This VF is absolutely beautiful, it looks great, it's been looked after very well, it sounds decent, it's already got some nice mods (big HSV brakes, small cam, headers, zorst, OTR, tune and a nice set of after market rims .....) the interior blows my mind and it truly is nice to drive. I would go as far as to say it is 'luxurious' to drive. Goes pretty good when you kick it hard and cruises effortlessly, jump on the brakes and you get pulled up real quick .... all the boxes tick tick tick ........ But,
I can't stop thinking about what has pretty much been one of the loves of my life for the last 20 years ............ my VY wags ...... she's no VF SSV in terms or tech or comfort, or possibly even looks; But GOD DAMN ...... she's like the dirty girlfriend you had way back when .......... you know the one. The one that you know you can get into and have a farking great ride! The one that squirms all over the joint, makes heaps of noise and goes like a frik'n rocket for as long as you want it to ........... yeah that one ...... and you can't help comparing the 2 ........
The Princess vs the Whore ......... we all know which one is good for us and which one we can take home to mum, but damn, tell me you don't wanna sneak off for some 'whore time' ............ if only you can get away with it (how can I become 'that' man ....)
So, I sit here trying to get excited about my new VF (which I should, because it's a wicked bit of motoring wizardry), but, all the while thinking of how much it will suck not being bale to go get my 'thaing' on with my dirty little girl ............ for the time being, I have them both there for me to play with but I know the time will come .......... and I really am quite sad and hence, this is why I wonder if I have done the right thing ......
That was pretty dramatic huh ...... first world problems and all ...... DOH
Know the feeling. :yup:
I hardly ever drive my SS these days, it sits under a car cover in my shed most of the time but I know I would regret it if I sold it.
You have not got long for it to qualify for the cheap Historic registration & I can't see it going down in value so I would just keep it.
Viper Alert told me the battery was getting low, so I took the O'l girl (VY not the wife....) for a morning whirl ......... sigh.....
The VY is a frik'n rocket ship .......... the size difference is really noticeable now I've jumped back and forth a few times between the VF and VY ...... The VY feels so much smaller and fits like an old leather glove and is so nimble and responsive compared to the VF - not that I am bagging the VF .......... the differences are really BIG LOL (I will be taking the VF out this arvo though to even up the ledger).
Even the wife said to me this morning when I got back "your regretting it aren't you ..............?"
A little yes ..........
It's funny, sometimes you don't realize what it is you have until you get the chance to compare to something similar .......... I don't regret getting the VF, but, I am regretting the agreement to sell the VY ......... :stupid:
Yep, the VF is definitely nicer, more refined, newer, overall better car. But it sounds like what your missing is the fun factor. (Horsepower aside)
Based on my driving experiences with Commodores I would guess alot of this has something to do with the the extra weight of the VE/VF models. They feel nice and safe, with great handling. They are great for such a heavy car and are probably faster through corners, ......but IMO its just not the same as a lighter car for that fun feel.
The fact that you have the luxury of going back and forth probably makes it more obvious?
Could that be accurate?
I never owned a VF, but I had two VE. Despite the refinement and better platform, I never really gelled with them. I always found them too big and heavy. My Monaro felt just right to me from the first time I drove it, thus I still have it. But, it's feels different to the 4 doors. Sedan vs sedan I preferred my VX II. Surprisingly a much better car than my VT II. I think a lot of that was the little changes, but in particular the revised rear suspension on the VX II. That should have been there from the original VT. Everything before that was not good when you added power and if you were interested in handling.
The simple addition of Bilstein shocks and eibach springs turned my VX II SS 6 speed with that revised rear suspension into a lovely car to drive. No issues launching it, even with extra power. My VP Senator 5000i with a 355 stroker had Koni yellow, kings springs, Whiteline sway bars, new bushes, camber kits and adjustable strut tops, all set up by a race experienced tuner and was still a handful. I liked the size of the car, but launching it was hard work, it always felt like it wanted to swap ends and was too easy to induce understeer.
Yep, I rek'n you are on point there ... there is not much that hasn't been changed/upgraded on the VY as well ......... but I think the biggest diffs are the handling (Coil overs, Sway bars and SV9000 steering rack etc) and the power (VY is just on tap due to top mount charger and the A4 is tweaked just right with the 3500 stallie) - The LS3 needs some "encouragement" to get into the zone. Being able to jump out of one and into the other is probably not that healthy to be honest ......... LOL (and it's probably not fair comparing the 2 as the VY has had BIG bucks spent on it over the years ............ I've probably got close to 80k in receipts sitting in my brief case from all the good gear I've done over the years).
The biggest thing I am NOT a fan of is the electric steering on the VF ....... you just can't 'feel' the road ...... but I will probably get used to that over time.
I've been talking with my brother in law about the same thing ...... whether I made the right decision and after taking him out for a good hour drive in the VF the other day - his comment was basically - yep beautiful "luxury" car but the VY would chew it up and spit it out ...........
Somehow I have to wangle a blower on this thing to even the power stakes and maybe stiffen the ride up a tad ............. but, as IJ said to me the other day:
"Leave it alone .......... that is all"........ Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Hi Smitty, what does VERY BAD mean bud?
Have you heard something I am not aware of about the IGLA alarm? Or, are you just referring the SH1T that is Melbourne thefts at the moment (because yup, it sure as hell sux arse)?
I'm currently only driving the VF where I know I can secure it (so friends places etc) but I am booked in next Thur for the full IGLA alarm system (with an additional cabin screamer siren)? Once done, I'll have some confidence that I can leave it outside work etc (but stuff going to shopping centers etc in it ........ not gunna take that risk LOL)
I'm also gunna grab a steering and/or brake lock as well for a visual deterrent.
I'd be interested to know what else you have done - perhaps PM me with other 'options'?
I've got the VF booked in this Monday for a full service and want to do plugs/leads/engine oil/tranny oil/filters etc
I'm probably gunna use Mobile 1 or Penrite fully synthetic 10/60w for engine but would love to hear thoughts on best tranny oil/filters (Penrite ATF IV or DEX 6 etc), plugs and leads etc
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers lads,
Very bad.. meaning LOTS are going walkabout and not with their rightful owners! :cussing:
2 guys in the car club... SSv and V8 Calais V
2 guys at work... one from our Braeside mfg site and one from our national warehouse
at Dandenong south
Plus one in my street.. he got his back as the local plod reacted very quickly to a 131444 call
and then several streets away, polair followed and led the dog squad and couple of TMG cars
to where the car was sitting (while the carns tried to pinch a BMW from another house)
Note - the 2 involved here were out on bail, one has EIGHTEEN vehicle theft charges
pending and he is walking the streets?
:flamin:
and quite a few in the HSV club have reported theirs have gone. One went to Fountain Gate
to collect a kid's present (his missus has ordered in) a few days before Christmas and as he walked
back into the carpark there from the shops, only to see his car leaving going out onto Princes Hwy
(it has other christmas stuff he had picked up)
you can see why I said ... VERY BAD!
So, had the following installed today ............
IGLA Immobilizer
IGLA full Alarm system ..... Shock Sensor, Tilt Sensor, Motion Sensor
Additional Battery Backup Siren
Internal Cabin Screamer (and Oh my lord is that farker LOUD and NASTY!!)
Horn Relocation
and an Apple Car play upgrade just to round it off ..........
Also have a BlackVue 770X 2 Channel DVR with LTE Cloud connect, gps tracking and auto image upload ready to install once I sort out the sim card for it ....
Cop Lock soon on its way ....
All of the above with a Solid GPS tracker on top ........ Fark Yeah! Oh and you come to my house and I hear you, I have a quite grumpy Bull Mastiff who I am more than happy to let out to say hi!
You ain't getting my ride ya grubby little pricks and if you do, I'll find you and you WILL regret it!
This shit is out of control in Melbourne ...........
Sounds like you have it well covered from the vehicle side of things mate, but what about where the cars are stored when not in use? I have recently put patio bolts on my panel lift doors, cheap to purchase and pretty simple to install, now I can dead bolt the doors and not rely on just the motor to stop the panel being forced up.
ps...The pooch sounds like a good deterrent for most unwanted visitors.
I've gota be honest, since getting all the gear installed I have ZERO anxiety about leaving my car (within limits, I'm still not gunna leave it at a shopping center) plus I have it insured for a decent amount.
My thinking is, yup it may get damaged trying to get access to the vehicle, but unless they have a tilt tray, they ain't getting it ................. not easily anyway. It's gunna take time and it's gunna make a LOT of noise. So hopefully they move onto something a little harder.
The problem I currently have is ............ I am still in love with my other wagon ......... sigh...... :nopity:
I love the VF, it's a sweet MoFo of a ride .......... but god damn, the VY is like an old glove; It just feels 'right' ...... after 20 years of driving the O'l girl it just feels 'comfortable' and damn she goes LOL
I know first world problems huh ................ :moon:
You might just have to wait a little while for the right buyer with $150,000 to come along. :yup: :hide:
Having said that, I think if you locked it in the shed with a car cover over it
I am pretty sure it would do much better than money in a bank account over the next few years,
I certainly can't imagine it going down in value.
Question for you lads on the VF.......
I'm not happy with the ride quality and I want to address the body roll and 'doughy' suspension (she's real soft and rolls pretty badly on corners, especially on acceleration) ......... I don't want to go silly so thinking shocks and springs to match... I also don't want to go any lower than stock.
I've been looking at something like: Monroe GT Sport Shocks and Kind Springs (as an example)
https://www.superspares.com.au/monro...s-for~12580869
Can I get your thoughts on options ....... cost will be an issue with the Minister LOL ..........
I had Kings and Monroes in the VE for quite a while. They did the job but were pretty harsh ie Rough as guts. Apparently this is a known trait for Kings. I have heard good things about Eibach springs and I think a few on here have used them? I personally went to adjustable coilovers and was much happier. A lot more expensive though.
Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs in my rig and the ride is a good compromise between comfort and handling, lower than stock though. Nolathane bushes also helped with keeping the diff and suspension alignment but does increase NVH, its all trade off's.
My experience is on earlier models (VT-VZ) so it may not be that relevant, but I'd personally be skeptical of the ride quality (or lack of) of the Monroe GT shocks. I felt the 'bump setting' was very stiff. (maybe that's good for less body roll?)
I now have Koni adjustable Sports and the ride is so much better, feels like a softer 'bump setting' (but the rebound is still adjustable and can be stiffened if need be)
The same Kings springs were fitted in both cases.
Probably best to go and have a chat at some workshops and if possible have a ride in a car similar to what you're looking for.
Good Luck.
I just reread your post. If it is body roll that is concerning you might be time for some bigger sway bars. I did Superpro F+R in my Calais and that made a massive difference in getting rid of that boat on the high seas feel.
I did front and rear (again) on mine Sep/Oct last year.. coming up 10 years and 85k under the wheels
I went with stiffer EXHD rear springs (kings) as I was getting tired of the dog bum dragging attitude
when going off to the track with a bootload and the car/trailer combo out back. Same ride height but
it actually rides 14mm higher now unladen (full tank) so had a small rake
The springs sorted I went KONIs front and rear for shock supression. Not too exxie compared to
Bilstein and only a few $ more than the Monroe GT short shock F&R combo
Make sure the other stuff (front strut bearings, spring mounts etc) also get done at the time
... my front strut bearings were cactus falling to pieces when removed
Thanks lads.
I actually had Koni's originally in the VY and loved them ........... so I might re think the Munroe's. I agree about the sway bars but that's gunna have to be down the track, as budget is a bit of an issue (and I don't want to give the minister any ammo in regards to getting rid of the VY at the moment) ......
Where is a decent place in Melb to source some gear and have a chat to some folks?
Cheers,
NOT Pedders !
I am a PIARC member and lots of the guys, for road and track cars go to
Centreline suspension who support/sponsor the club
http://www.centrelinesuspension.com.au/
or try ADVANTAGE Suspension in Moorabbin
Thanks Smitty,
have been poking around, chatting to folks and reading lots of forums and articles. Had settled on a combo of Lovells springs and Koni shocks and was going to get a local fella to install for me ........... then I called Nathan at Advantage Suspension (should have started here first LOL).
Top bloke, very helpful and came very highly recommended (not just by you but a few different sources ....... including Lovell's themselves LOL).
Was not originally considering Billsteins but after chatting to him and doing some more poking around, I've settled on a Lovells/Billstein combo ...... very knowledgeable bloke with LOTS of experience with Commodore and in particular VF's.
Looks like it won't be as cheap as I was hoping (given the strut tops and various bushes will most likely be flogged out according to him with a car my age and km's) but also not stupid money either.
So the ballpark figures he has given me are reasonable (not so sure the minister will agree, so I will have to pick my moment ........ I've already started laying the ground work, so she knows and agrees that the suspension needs addressing - it helps when her Ranger takes corners and undulation better than mine and she knows it LOL as she was complaining about how 'boaty' it was Yeah!)
Will probably start dropping hints about the dangers of flogged suspension and follow up with cost a wee while later and and take it from there ......... Fingers crossed.
Thanks for all the advice fellas.
Did you get it sorted yet Franga?
Not yet mate .......
Have a good idea on what I want to do now and also on cost but $$$ is a bit tight at the moment .......... just got my bonus too (which was meant to cover it) and the wife took the bloody lot (not to mention all my ebay sales ......... FFS) so gunna have to wait a bit.
Can someone remind the benefits or a being married (at 57 it sure ain't special cuddles either ..........) ........... damn, I just said that out loud huh :hide:
