I'm confident of an iPhone5 in 2012 - true, it was a bit of a let down to have the 4S instead of a 5. Taking their customers for granted after 16 months of the iPhone4.
But with regard to marketing; that always makes me laugh. There is a HELL of a lot more to the iPhone than clever marketing - this is what the competitors are only just starting to understand.

for work i need to transfer/exchange info with other machines/people. Just cannot do that with an iPhone unless they have an iPhone too.
Never going back to Apple it is to limited, even the latest features of the iPhone 4 S are only catching up to what was already on the Galaxy S.

What info can't you transfer to machines/people ??
Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2
Utter BS. Name what you can't transfer and I'll tell you how you can

He may be referring to (1) connecting the phone to the PC to use as a USB storage device, as apposed to having to use iTunes and (2) BT file transfer.

These two videos wrap up the subject pretty well I think. It seems the only thing Apple is better at is marketing...... Sorta NSFW - There are a few swear words so volume low at work/around kids!!

To start with, Calendar Entries.
Can transfer stuff via email but that did not work with my old Nokia as i did not have email on it.
On Android you can transfer with bluetooth or even barcodes, i have found that really good, might work with an iphone but have not tried it yet.
Used to have my Nokia attached to my pc and send sms's directly from my PC through the phone.
Dont get me wrong, i know the iphone 4s is a good unit now that Apple have fixed the antenna issue.
Just suggesting to look at what is out there before just getting the next model as there are other quite valid options depending on what you want from a communication tool.
I work in IT so i see a lot of this from the inside and get to work with a lot of beta stuff too. If the iPhone 5 can make the next jump that would be good for Apple, but they need to do more than play catchup, also not sure how their relationship with samsung will change the hardware moving forward. Nokia have got into bed with Microsoft so that will change things too, i will not be crying over the loss of Simbian.
This is just my opinion.

A unified inbox is really a bare minimum these days, for a new release of "the most popular smartphone operating system" not to do this is a big oversight. ICS is a nice advance over previous efforts but it's still fiddly and has plenty of unintuitive controls.
Have you worked out the combined email through native email app yet? Talk about bare minimum;

Sure, you can BT file transfer with apps from the App Store, as far as I'm aware, but that's like buying a new SSV and then having to buy aftermarket indicators because it didn't come with them  Complete bullshit by the way. The whole point of the Market/App Store is to supply apps that do things that the native apps can't do or don't do well. You're whinging about having to download an app ffs.
What's the solution to connecting to a computer that doesn't have iTunes?

Sure, but you have to admit that it is pretty hopeless that if you add a gmail account to the native gmail app, the email app will not integrate with that. Sorry, but that is the sort of unintuitive nonsense that is still a characteristic of android. No unified inbox is something that others have complained about. (i.e. gmail/native email app).

Other than a bigger screen on hardware, how are they playing catchup?
Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2
I have tried not to get into this too much, as this isn't a logical argument - it is people justifying that their purchase is right, and everyone elses is wrong!
Let me put it this way - iPhone sucks the big one in my field. I am the Flex / eLearning / Ed Dev manager for a tertiary institute, and thanks to Apple seemingly "thumbing their nose" to a lot of standards, we are having to weither leave out, or do things in a long winded manner. 3 key points stick out for me:
1. The documented lack of flash support. A lot of the elearning interactive content has to be re written, or just not provided because of this
2. Apple not adopting the standards for bluetooth. Not being able to push files to an iPhone is ridiculous. This means that "hot spots" on machinery (for example) that push out the operating info for a piece of equipment, course brochures and bluetooth marketing do not work.
3. iTunes... I love it when iTunes syncronises the phone back to the computer - leaving the phone bare! The whole cumbersome idea of having to create playlists etc to sync files via iTunes is over the top.
Before people get on my back about "there are apps for that / jailbreak.. or whatever" - our application is based on non technical users, the desire for mobile technology to take a better position in learning, and student desire to have learning available "anywhere". For this, I hope that Apple really does something about these issues, because, they are rampant as fashion devices, but pale to Android or Windows devices in our context.
Yes... I do have an iPhone, and an Android!

Or....you could add gmail as a regular IMAP account into the email app? The reason Gmail is separate is because it has functionality outside the scope of regular POP/IMAP email protocols such as starred message syncing, message labelling (work/important etc) and push sync (instant receiving which simply isn't possible with IMAP/POP). Gmail isn't really like traditional email anymore in the way it functions behind the scenes, the backend has changed from a simple email store to having calendars/contacts/docs etc bundled. Think of it as something new, with back-wards compatibility with SMTP and IMAP/POP (like MS Exchange).
You could use something like K9Mail (my preferred) and add POP/IMAP accounts to that (including gmail accounts, although you will be limited by what POP/IMAP can do). That's something which doesn't happen on the iphone because, well, it's against AppStore policy to have apps which duplicate system features which is utterly insane. The only exception I know of is the Opera Mini browser (they already created the app and Apple not approving it would make them look bad as Opera was quite big in the mobile space at the time).
Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2
search Mozila seabird on google for ideas.
all the functions for the seabird are out there and have been for years, but no one has put them together.
for example the projected keyboard was available from iTech in 2005, working with any phone with full bluetooth support.
Some have asked about itunes music on Android, go check out iSyncr and the WiFi add on, costs about $3 is the only app i have paid for and its well worth it.
Make you changes to your play lists in itunes, but before I even plug my ipod in the changes are on my phone too.
Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2
So the iPhone is so sh!t can somone explain why Samsung are hell bent on making their phone and icons look exactly the same? With my previous phone (SGS) people would think it was an iPhone. OK less so on the SGSII.
You see the same thing is happening time and time again. Europeans (Nokia early days), Americans (Apple) do the innovation, design and GUI and the Samsungs of the world copy and mass produce. The funny part is Samsung are so good at copying and producing that Apple rely on Samsung for parts in their iPhone.
I have had both SGS which broke when I sat down with the phone in my pocket and for the last three months and iPhone 4s. The only difference is for the apps that I use the iPhone has not crashed or required a reboot except for the iOS updates. The SGS would be a daily ritual to reboot the phone after lunch to get memory usage back even though I had a app killer. The SGS would also require rebooting when frozen - never got to the bottom of this. Let me point out this was not the phones fault.
[DRUM ROLL PLEASE]
So in my experience and hence my conclusion is if you want an opperating system that works and you may need to add an app to get it how you want it and flash is not important (can be done with JB or clunky WWW) then go with iOS iPhone. If you wish to have the freedom to do what you want then look at Android (Samsung, HTC etc) but along with that freedom in OS and Dev comes the possibility of some instability. Neither is perfect. Peer pressure is probably more relevant.

You're thinking about things the wrong way. You're adding the gmail account to the gmail app and want it to come up in a seperate app. If you want it to work in the email app then add it to the email app. Simple really. Unless you want two apps showing you the same emails!
As mentioned, the gmail app is specific to gmail as there are many more features your regular accounts don't have. You can't add a non-gmail account to this app but you can add the gmail account to the email app and have your unified inbox. It's not rocket science...
