For what it's worth, I've found that since I've had the deeper pan and baffles, the gearbox will occasionally flare under light throttle. I've discussed with my engine builder/tuner and he says that from time to time, the solenoids and valve bodies that control the shifting, stick a little. At the drag strip, the shifts are quick and sharp - no dramas

So in saying that, it would be safe to assume that modifying the pan does assist in eliminating the issue of shift delay/flaring at the drag strip (or under similar circumstances). The partial throttle problem would be an un-related issue most likely. But in terms of fluid flow and line pressure, it seems the modified pan overcomes the problems associated with the standard VE pan?
Hello all just thought I would let you know I have fitted up the pan and filter I got from Wonky. Haven't done much driving around yet but it does seem to shift a bit more direct into 2nd and 3rd (was in manual shift and it seemed to change quicker)

Filled pan and took 5.7ltrs to get to level plug with engine running in N. Added another 500mls after refitting plug. I think you could safely put another 500ml in and still be roughly the same level as factory. Fire away if you have any more questions

Hey Wonky - did you end up getting our pans sorted?
Sorry, just got back from 3 weeks overseas. My baffled pan arrived from gaz05 just before we left so I left it with Chev to fit while we were away as he had the car there for some other stuff. I did get a PM from him saying they'd had to make a slight mod to make it fit and looking at Dieselman's posts I assume it was to do with the fill plug which gaz had extended to get more oil in. The lengthened fill plug came to just under the level of the top of the Caddy sump so I guess if you filled it till it was running out of the gasket then let a bit out you'd have the equivalent to what gaz intended. I will pick the car up later today.
I did ask gaz about the other pans in a PM before I went but haven't had a reply. I guess he may be waiting to see how mine goes before selling any more he has (he bought a further 8 from me to do the mods on so it's in his interests to sell them to recoup his money). Even if the mods don't 100% fix the flaring (I reckon they'll make a big diff) it's worth it to me just to have my A6 running cooler with a sizable increase in capacity.
PS I'll only know if it makes things worse as with Chev's A6 tune my basically never flared anyway - it's only been at the drags three times in over three years and never flared once! :goodjob: As morpheousssv found with his, I very occasionally get some very minor flaring at light throttle.

Picked the car up yesterday arvo late and drove about 80km to a function then home. Maybe it's because for the past 3 weeks overseas I've only been in manuals but I was amazed at how smooth the A6 was!! :goodjob: Was it due to the new pan and extra capacity or had I just forgotten about it after being driven hundreds of kms in manuals? Who knows?? :confused:
As far as I can see in this thread, the summary for tackling flaring on this box is the following:
1. Try adding 500ml extra trans fluid. Failing this;
2. Tune the auto and look into trans line pressure. Failing this;
3. Change to the bigger caddy pan. failing this;
4. Build a new box...
Is this correct?
As I said above, I'm still very impressed with how smooth the car is since I picked it back up a fortnight ago, not only the A6 but also in general as Chev also gave the tune a bit of a tweak. The A6 is almost seamless and smooth in changes and today I've been checking the trans temp through engineering mode. In normal driving (max 25km trips) I've yet to see it even reach 80C. I never tow (no towbar) and apart from the occasional (maybe twice a week on average?) short burst of WOT acceleration never give it a hard time due to my disabilities but like knowing I should never get the A6 fluid overly hot due to the extra capacity.
Those who have read the thread for a while may recall that I got the last 8 Caddy pans Holden had in Australia (they're not getting more) and sold them to gaz05 to modify along with one I got from the USA just to make sure they were identical. Given the hassles gaz has had I'm not sure whether he's done any but the one he sent back to me a month or so ago and I don't want to leave him high and dry but I'm also concerned for the guys I imported filters for from the USA many months ago in anticipation of him baffling the pans to suit. Therefore I PMd him a week ago to see if he was going to finish and sell them on to the guys waiting for them or whether I should just get some more in from the USA for those who already have the filters. He read the PM next day but hasn't replied so I suspect possibly he's lost interest with everything else going on in his life.
Therefore, particularly from those guys who've bought the Caddy filters in anticipation and assuming gaz05 isn't worried about finishing (baffling) and selling the Caddy pans is anyone interested in me getting a price on getting some from the USA? The baffling should be pretty easy for anyone with a welder.
